How to Fix Audio and Video Stuttering in an OBS YouTube Playlist Stream

Find the source of OBS YouTube playlist stuttering, then troubleshoot network drops, local rendering or encoding lag, media playback, audio, and viewer buffering.

To fix stuttering in an OBS YouTube playlist stream, first check which OBS indicator is rising: dropped frames point to the connection to YouTube’s ingest server, while rendering or encoding lag points to local computer workload. If those counters look healthy, investigate playlist playback, audio routing, or buffering on viewers’ devices. Change one thing at a time and compare the same test segment; an arbitrary audio delay or bitrate change can hide the real cause.

Identify where the stutter starts

Before changing settings, note where the problem appears: in the OBS preview, in the stream itself, or only for some viewers. Then open OBS’s Stats window and watch the counters while the playlist plays. OBS distinguishes connection-related dropped frames from rendering and encoding lag, which have different causes and fixes. OBS’s dropped-frames guide and encoding-overload guide explain these indicators.

  • Dropped frames increase: OBS is struggling to maintain its connection to the remote ingest server at the configured bitrate.
  • Rendering lag: OBS cannot render frames quickly enough, often because the scene or sources are demanding too much from the computer.
  • Encoding lag: OBS cannot encode frames quickly enough with the selected encoder settings or available resources.
  • No broadcaster-side counters rise: Check the playlist source and audio path. If only viewers report buffering, investigate their playback path separately.

Record the OBS connection indicator and the dropped, rendering, and encoding statistics before and after each change. If you need a deeper diagnosis, keep the operating system, OBS version, playlist source, media formats, OBS log, and whether the stutter is in the preview, stream, or viewer playback in mind.

Check the playlist source and its dependencies

OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists, but it requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. The regular Media Source accepts individual media files and has a loop option; VLC Video adds playlist controls, including loop playlist and shuffle, as well as visibility behavior and a network-caching setting. See OBS’s media sources guide.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Identify whether the playlist is playing through VLC Video or individual Media Sources.
  2. If you use VLC Video, confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Play the actual playlist files through the source you plan to use. Check whether the stutter happens in the OBS preview and whether it follows a particular file or transition.
  4. For a controlled comparison, test the same files with the other supported approach: VLC Video for a playlist, or Media Source for individual files. Keep the rest of the scene and output settings unchanged.

The source type alone does not establish which option will be smoother on a particular computer. Test the real files and playlist instead of assuming that changing source will fix every stutter. Avoid changing VLC’s cache by guesswork; the available guidance does not establish one cache value that suits every setup.

If rendering or encoding lag rises, reduce local workload

These counters indicate local performance pressure, not a network problem. OBS recommends simplifying scenes, removing expensive sources or filters, reducing browser-source use, and using Media Source or VLC Source for audio and video files. If needed, lower output resolution or frame rate; moving from 60 fps to 30 fps can reduce the work OBS must do. On Windows, OBS also suggests trying to run OBS as administrator. See OBS’s encoding-overload guidance.

  1. Close or remove sources and filters you do not need for the playlist stream, especially resource-intensive ones.
  2. Reduce browser sources where possible, and use Media Source or VLC Source for media files.
  3. If lag continues, lower output resolution or frame rate. Test 30 fps if you are currently outputting at 60 fps.
  4. On Windows, try launching OBS as administrator, then check the same counters during the same playlist segment.
  5. Change one item per test. Keep a note of whether rendering lag, encoding lag, or both improve, and decide whether any quality or motion trade-off is acceptable.

If dropped frames rise, troubleshoot the network path

OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. The frames are dropped to compensate. Lower bitrate, test another streaming server, and investigate VPNs, security software, network utilities, drivers, and network hardware. OBS offers about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, but that is not a guarantee of stable capacity; upload speed can vary, and YouTube’s recommendations and limits still apply. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.

  1. Test a lower bitrate and watch whether the dropped-frame percentage stops increasing during the same stream segment.
  2. If you are on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection. An Ethernet cable is relevant to suspected Wi-Fi instability; it will not fix rendering or encoding lag.
  3. Check whether a VPN, security software, network utility, or driver may be interfering with the route to the ingest server.
  4. Try another available streaming server and compare the connection indicator and dropped-frame counter.
  5. Choose the lowest bitrate that produces a stable connection while preserving acceptable picture quality. Do not assume a nominal upload-speed reading is continuously available to the stream.

Match OBS output to YouTube’s live guidance

Test before the event with audio and video motion similar to the planned playlist, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Its published H.264 bitrate recommendations include 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding recommendations are 12 Mbps and 10 Mbps. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection can sustain them. Other resolutions and frame rates have different recommendations. YouTube also transcodes live streams for different viewer formats. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Use YouTube’s recommendation for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec as a reference, then check whether your real upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. If dropped frames rise, stability may require a lower bitrate even if that means a quality trade-off.

Isolate audio instead of guessing at sync delay

Listen to the playlist source as early as possible in the source path, then listen again through OBS monitoring. Watch the source’s audio meter while the stutter occurs. This helps establish whether the irregularity begins in the media file or source, or later in OBS’s audio path. OBS’s audio monitoring guide describes monitoring; YouTube’s live settings guidance recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio.

  1. Check whether the source meter moves smoothly when the playlist plays.
  2. Listen at the source and through OBS monitoring, noting where the irregularity first appears.
  3. Check that the audio format is appropriate for the planned output, then test again.
  4. Do not add an audio sync offset unless you have measured a consistent timing difference. A delay adjustment cannot repair intermittent stuttering by itself.

If only viewers report buffering

Ask whether the OBS connection and performance counters remain healthy during the reports, and compare playback on another device or internet connection. Different viewers have different devices and network access, so viewer buffering can occur even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames. YouTube transcodes live streams for different viewer formats, but a viewer’s playback conditions still matter. OBS recommends considering bitrate and resolution trade-offs for broad reach. See OBS’s connection and buffering guidance.
