Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a YouTube-bound H.264 stream, set bitrate by resolution and frame rate: YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 8 Mbps for either 720p30 or 720p60. Use CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), and RTMPS where supported. If you send video through Castr, keep the encoder-to-Castr ingest settings separate from the Castr-to-YouTube output settings; YouTube’s current recommendations govern the YouTube ingest leg.
Recommended YouTube settings for H.264
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not guarantees of picture quality. Choose a resolution and frame rate your source, encoder, and sustained upload connection can reliably maintain. YouTube’s current encoder guidance was checked in 2026.
| Output resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 50 Mbps |
These are targets for the feed delivered to YouTube. The right choice depends on the content: higher resolution preserves more image detail, while higher frame rate can make motion look smoother. Neither is useful if your source does not contain that detail or your system cannot sustain the required output.
Set the rest of the YouTube encoder settings
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data in transit to and through Google’s servers.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are supported by YouTube’s current guidance. The bitrate table above is specifically for H.264; do not apply its figures to another codec.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set an interval of 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and specifies a maximum of 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are accepted. YouTube lists stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps.
Use the same target resolution and frame rate throughout the encoder and output configuration. Before relying on the stream, test it and check YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming that a successful connection means the picture and sound are healthy.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep Castr ingest settings separate from YouTube output
A Castr workflow can involve two separate stream legs: your encoder sends an input to Castr, then Castr sends an output to YouTube. Do not combine settings for those legs into one bitrate rule. Castr’s LiveAPI guide gives general ingest recommendations, including H.264, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, preferred audio at 128 Kbps, and a 2-second keyframe interval; it also provides its own resolution-related ranges and directs users to the destination’s guidance for platform-specific settings.
For the final YouTube feed, use YouTube’s current codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific guidance. Castr’s YouTube bitrate article lists 12 Mbps for H.264 1080p60, while YouTube’s current official table recommends 17 Mbps. The available sources do not explain the difference; for a YouTube ingest target, follow YouTube’s current figure.

Size your upload connection for continuous operation
Measure sustained upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and accounting for both primary and backup stream bandwidth. A shared or variable connection may perform differently during the hours the channel runs, so check it under realistic conditions and avoid choosing a bitrate that leaves no margin.
For example, a primary H.264 1080p60 feed uses a YouTube-recommended target of 17 Mbps. Add any backup feed’s required bandwidth, then preserve the recommended headroom rather than treating the full measured upload rate as available for video. If your connection cannot reliably support the target with that margin, lower the output setting or improve the connection before committing to continuous playback.

Plan recording and recovery for a 24/7 stream
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a day-long feed
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A continuous 24/7 stream therefore should not rely on YouTube’s archive as its only recording. If preserving the program matters, arrange a separate local or otherwise independent recording plan.
Monitor the stream and test failover
YouTube’s operations guidance recommends advance setup and testing, ongoing quality monitoring, checking that local archive files are growing, and testing backup-encoder failover. Its advice to arrange an encoder at least two hours before an event and start it at least 15 minutes ahead concerns event preparation; those timings are not special requirements for a continuous stream. For an always-on channel, establish a monitoring routine and verify that the recovery path works before depending on it.

Castr documents two backup approaches: an encoder-level option, where a second encoder can take over, and a file-level option, where backup VOD can play if live input drops. Castr also describes adaptive bitrate and customizable rendition controls. Availability can depend on plan or account state; check your account and current service terms before relying on a particular function.

- Unstable picture or dropped frames: Check sustained upload capacity and network sharing, then reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until the connection can maintain the stream with headroom.
- Stream health reports a bitrate or connection issue: Confirm that the setting is for the YouTube output leg, that CBR is selected, and that your actual upload capacity supports the target plus any backup feed.
- Video appears less smooth than expected: Check that the source and output frame rate match. A 60 fps output cannot create motion detail absent from the source, and it requires a higher H.264 target than 30 fps at the same resolution in YouTube’s table.
- Stream fails after an input interruption: Check the encoder, network, and Castr input separately, then verify that the selected backup method is configured and tested. Do not assume an untested backup encoder or file will take over automatically.
- The stream ends but there is no complete archive: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Check your separate recording plan and confirm that local recording files are growing during operation.
