If your YouTube stream looks choppy and OBS reports “encoding overloaded,” reduce the encoder’s workload first: try a lower output resolution or change 60 fps to 30 fps, then test again. But viewer buffering does not by itself prove your CPU is overloaded. Check OBS’s encoder and dropped-frame indicators alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages to distinguish encoding trouble from GPU rendering or an upload problem.
First, identify which kind of buffering you have
“Buffering” can describe two different problems. Your outgoing live feed may be delayed, choppy, or marked unhealthy, or a viewer may see playback pause on their own connection. A viewer’s playback buffering alone does not establish that your streaming PC has an overloaded CPU.
Start with the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health status. YouTube Help advises checking encoder errors and CPU load when a stream looks or sounds bad; if the encoder output is healthy, the outbound internet connection becomes a plausible next check (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
Check OBS and YouTube together
- In OBS, inspect the status indicators and stats for encoder overload and dropped frames. Note whether the problem is an encoding warning or dropped frames associated with the connection.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, read the stream-health messages while the problem is happening.
- If you are recording a local archive, check whether that recording also looks or sounds bad. YouTube recommends checking encoder output and trying a different encoder if local output remains problematic.
Record the message and counters before changing settings. A clear “encoding overloaded” warning points toward encoding workload; healthy encoder output with stream-health or connection trouble calls for a network check instead.

How do I stop my YouTube stream from buffering?
Change one setting at a time and repeat the same test. Use the same game, scene, audio, and representative movement you expect during the real stream; otherwise, an easier test may conceal the problem.
- Reduce output resolution. In OBS, open Settings > Video and lower the output resolution. A smaller output gives the encoder less work, though it also reduces image detail.
- Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps. In Settings > Video, lower the output frame rate if the PC cannot sustain 60 fps. You may lose some motion smoothness, but the encoder has fewer frames to process. OBS specifically recommends lowering resolution or frame rate, including trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working (OBS Project’s encoding-performance guide).
- Check the encoder choice. If you use CPU-based software encoding, see whether OBS offers a hardware encoder supported by your GPU and driver. Hardware encoding can move work from the CPU to a specialized component, but availability depends on compatible hardware and support. Compare the actual output at your chosen bitrate and settings rather than assuming quality will be identical (OBS Project’s hardware-encoding guide).
- Test the same scene again. Watch the OBS indicators and YouTube stream health. Keep the change only if the problem improves without unacceptable image or motion quality.
Check for GPU rendering and game load
Encoding is not the only workload that can affect a stream. OBS must also render and compose scenes using GPU resources. A demanding game, complex scenes, filters, or browser sources can contribute to performance trouble even when the encoder is not the sole bottleneck. OBS notes that performance depends on factors including the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS system requirements).

- Cap the game’s frame rate to a level the PC can sustain, or reduce demanding graphics settings.
- Simplify OBS scenes and test with fewer costly filters or browser sources.
- Change one item at a time, then repeat the representative test. If an encoding warning remains, continue reducing encoder workload; if rendering performance is the issue, focus on the game and scene load.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings as a reference
YouTube’s recommended settings vary by ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. For RTMP/RTMPS, its current guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; recommends CBR; supports frame rates up to 60 fps; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s current table for your codec and mode because bitrate recommendations vary (YouTube’s live encoder settings).

These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not proof that your connection can sustain the bitrate. Choose the codec, resolution, and frame rate you can encode reliably and upload with headroom; settings guidance does not guarantee a fix.

If encoder output is healthy, test the upload connection
A healthy encoder does not rule out an upload problem. Run an upload-speed test, not just a download-speed test. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused and warns that a shared home or office connection may provide less capacity to the stream than its headline speed suggests (YouTube streaming tips).
- Keep the total stream bitrate below the upload capacity actually available while you are live.
- Account for other devices and applications using the same connection.
- If YouTube reports stream-health trouble while OBS’s encoder output is healthy, investigate the outgoing connection before reducing CPU settings further.
Verify the fix before the next live stream
YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event (encoder settings guidance). Run a private or otherwise suitable test, reproduce the demanding gameplay and scene transitions that triggered the issue, and check OBS and YouTube throughout. If the warning returns, revert or adjust the last change and test again rather than changing several settings at once.
