To run a 24/7 sleep-music or rain-sounds stream on YouTube with FFmpeg, loop authorized media files, send them to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key, and keep the FFmpeg process running on a machine with a stable internet connection. For a continuous stream, you also need to test loop transitions, monitor stream health, plan recovery if FFmpeg or the connection stops, and arrange your own recording: YouTube says its automatic archive applies to streams under 12 hours.
What you need before starting
- Authorized media: audio and visuals whose licenses cover public livestreaming, any planned monetization, attribution, and continuous looping.
- FFmpeg: a build that supports the input formats and output protocol you intend to use. Protocol support can vary by build.
- A YouTube Live stream: its server URL and stream key, copied from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A stable upload connection and a running computer: FFmpeg sends the stream from the machine where it runs. If that machine or its internet connection stops, the feed can stop too.
YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started. The important practical test is whether your chosen connection can reliably sustain the bitrate you configure.
Choose media and check the rights
Use music, rain recordings, and visuals only when you have permission to livestream them on YouTube. A label such as “royalty free” does not, by itself, establish that a license permits continuous public livestreaming. Read the license for livestreaming, looping, attribution, redistribution, and monetization terms.
YouTube lists an active stream receiving a copyright strike and a stream matching another copyrighted live broadcast among its copyright-restriction cases. Its live-stream restrictions guidance explains the platform risk; it does not validate a particular track or library.

Decide how to loop the files
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option repeats an input indefinitely. The option belongs before the -i for the input it applies to. The -re option, equivalent to -readrate 1, reads a file at its native rate; FFmpeg describes this as useful when output flow speed matters, such as live streaming. It is for pacing file input, not something to apply carelessly to an actual live input. Check the FFmpeg command-line documentation and verify option behavior with your installed version.
There is no single universally safe command for every combination of separate audio and video files, codecs, loop lengths, and YouTube settings. Treat the following as the shape of the workflow, not a tested end-to-end command: select the authorized audio and visual inputs; apply looping to the relevant file inputs; pace file input when needed; map the intended audio and video streams; encode or copy compatible streams; then output to YouTube’s ingest URL with your stream key. Configure the exact encoder and output syntax for your files and FFmpeg build, and test it before going public.

Check loop seams and duration
If the audio ends before the visual, or the two loops have different durations, a transition may introduce silence, a frozen frame, a restart, or an audible seam. Listen and watch through several loop boundaries. Check that the audio remains continuous and at a comfortable level, that picture and sound remain synchronized, and that neither input unexpectedly ends. A rain recording may contain a noticeable change at the seam even when playback technically loops.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its Live Control Room settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter both in your FFmpeg output configuration, following the current YouTube setup and encoder instructions.
- Keep the key private: it functions like a password. Do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, or log. If it is compromised, reset it using YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Start FFmpeg and check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a stream and connecting an encoder.

Set the output for YouTube Live
For conventional encoder ingestion, YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current encoder settings guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. The recommendations below are platform guidance; the help page does not state a publication year.
| Setting or mode | YouTube guidance or constraint | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Keyframe frequency | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly. |
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | Recommended video bitrate: 10 Mbps. | Use only if your sustained upload can support it reliably. |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | Recommended video bitrate: 6 Mbps. | A lower-resolution option if it is a better fit for your connection. |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps. | Use the platform’s audio guidance and check that the mix is audible and not clipped. |
| 5.1 audio | 384 Kbps. | Relevant only if producing a compatible 5.1 stream. |
| RTMP/RTMPS | YouTube’s general live-encoder approach; RTMPS is recommended for secure transport. | Check protocol support in your FFmpeg build and use the current YouTube encoder settings. |
| HLS | YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT; YouTube notes higher latency than RTMP. | Use only if you need HLS and your encoder supports its required format and settings. |
These are not guarantees that a particular bitrate will work on your connection. YouTube advises testing upload speed and choosing a rate the connection can sustain. A stable lower resolution is preferable to a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames or disconnects. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for protocol support; the available protocols depend on how FFmpeg was built.

HLS is an alternative ingestion method, not a drop-in equivalent to RTMP. Its segment and playlist requirements add configuration complexity, and its latency is higher according to YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test before leaving the stream running
- Send a private or otherwise appropriate test stream with representative audio and visuals.
- Watch the YouTube preview and inspect stream-health messages; confirm that both picture and sound arrive as expected.
- Listen across multiple loop boundaries and check for silence, abrupt cuts, clipping, or sync changes.
- Run the setup long enough to expose likely problems, and verify what happens if FFmpeg exits or the network briefly disconnects.
- Decide how you will monitor logs and alerts and restart the process after a failure. FFmpeg and YouTube do not, by themselves, guarantee uninterrupted operation.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking stream health. Its live-streaming tips also say expensive equipment is not required.

Plan for interruptions and keep an archive
A 24/7 target requires more than a loop: the FFmpeg process, computer, and network all need to remain available. Decide how you will detect a stopped process, restart it, and confirm that YouTube receives video and audio again. Automatic recovery from every failure is not established by the FFmpeg or YouTube guidance cited here, so test your own recovery arrangement instead of assuming a dropped connection will resume correctly.
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That stated condition does not cover a single continuous 24-hour broadcast, so do not rely on YouTube to provide a complete archive of it. If retaining the program matters, choose an archive plan such as recording locally or dividing the broadcast into shorter sessions, and verify the result.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Stream URL, key, output configuration, or protocol support. | Recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the key is current and private, and verify the local FFmpeg build supports the chosen protocol. |
| Stream health reports instability or dropped frames | Upload capacity or an overly demanding bitrate. | Test the connection and select a bitrate it can sustain; lower the resolution if needed. |
| Audio goes silent or changes abruptly at a loop | Audio duration, loop seam, or stream mapping. | Check the input mapping and inspect the transition; adjust or replace source media if the boundary is audible. |
| Audio and video stop together | FFmpeg process or host/network interruption. | Inspect process output and logs, restore the process or connection, then confirm the YouTube preview recovers. |
| The intended full-day recording is missing | A single stream exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour auto-archive condition. | Use a separate recording or shorter-session archive workflow and verify saved files. |
| Audio or visual content is restricted | Rights do not cover the livestream or the content matches protected material. | Review the license and YouTube restrictions; replace material unless you can establish the necessary rights. |
