How to Fix FFmpeg Reconnect Errors in a Nonstop Rain Sounds Stream

For HTTP rain-audio input, enable only the reconnect options that match the failure. First distinguish a dropped connection, EOF, HTTP status, or output-side error.

If your rain audio comes from an HTTP source, start by checking FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options: enable retries for dropped connections, network errors, streamed input, and—only for a source that should keep running—end-of-file. These settings do not apply automatically to RTMP, Icecast, RTSP, or output-side failures, and they cannot guarantee seamless playback. The exact fix depends on the input protocol and the full error.

Start with this HTTP-input template

Use this as an illustrative starting point only when FFmpeg reads the rain audio from an HTTP input:

ffmpeg
  -reconnect 1
  -reconnect_at_eof 1
  -reconnect_on_network_error 1
  -reconnect_streamed 1
  -reconnect_delay_max 30
  -i "INPUT_URL"
  -vn -c:a copy OUTPUT

Replace INPUT_URL and OUTPUT with your actual source and destination. This is not a tested command or a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. The audio copy setting is suitable only if the output accepts the input audio codec and container; otherwise, choose the encoding and container required by the destination. The documented reconnect options belong to FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol handling, not to every input or output protocol (FFmpeg Protocols Documentation).

What the reconnect options do

  • -reconnect 1 retries when a connection disconnects before EOF.
  • -reconnect_at_eof 1 treats EOF as an error and attempts to reconnect. FFmpeg documents this for live or endless streams. Leave it off for a finite source when reaching EOF should end playback; retrying EOF does not establish seamless looping or recovery at the exact previous audio position.
  • -reconnect_on_network_error 1 retries TCP/TLS errors during connection.
  • -reconnect_streamed 1 allows retries for errors on streamed or non-seekable input.
  • -reconnect_on_http_error 5xx is an optional way to retry selected HTTP responses. The syntax accepts status codes or categories such as 503 and 5xx, including comma-separated selections. Choose only responses that should be retried; blindly retrying client errors is not a fix.
  • -reconnect_delay_max N sets the maximum retry delay in seconds.
  • -reconnect_max_retries N caps the number of attempts. The current upstream implementation leaves this default unset.
  • -reconnect_delay_total_max N caps total reconnect delay. The current upstream implementation declares a default of 256 seconds.
  • -respect_retry_after 1 honors a server-provided Retry-After value. FFmpeg’s documentation says it is enabled by default and notes its relevance to HTTP 429 and 503 responses.

The current upstream HTTP implementation declares reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_streamed disabled by default; reconnect_delay_max is 120 seconds. It declares the retry-count default unset, total-delay default as 256 seconds, and respect_retry_after enabled. These are implementation defaults, not a promise about every installed build. Check the version and local help for the binary that actually runs your stream (FFmpeg HTTP implementation).

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Diagnose the failure before changing flags

  1. Identify the failing leg. Inspect the complete command and the input URL scheme. These flags address HTTP input handling. If the source is RTMP, Icecast, RTSP, or another protocol—or if the output connection is failing—consult that protocol’s documentation instead of assuming HTTP options will help.
  2. Classify the error. Read the full FFmpeg log and, for HTTP, the response status. A TCP/TLS connection error, an HTTP status response, a normal EOF, a decoder error, and an output error are different conditions. Use -reconnect_on_http_error only for status codes that merit another attempt.
  3. Decide what EOF means. For an endless live source, reconnecting at EOF may be appropriate. For a finite file, EOF may simply mean playback is complete. The option tells FFmpeg to try again; it does not promise a continuous transition or restoration of the precise audio position.
  4. Choose a retry budget. Set the maximum delay, attempt count, and total retry delay to suit the source and the recovery time you can tolerate. A delay cap alone does not mean retries continue forever. Account for a server’s Retry-After response where relevant.
  5. Check the installed build. Run ffmpeg -version and inspect ffmpeg -h protocol=http. Older packages and custom builds may differ from current online documentation and upstream source.
  6. Plan for process exits. Protocol retries do not keep FFmpeg alive through every possible failure. If the process exits because of a decoder, output, or other error outside HTTP reconnect handling, process-level supervision may be needed; the right supervisor depends on your operating system and deployment.

Common symptoms and what to check

Symptom Likely distinction Next check
HTTP input disconnects before EOF Connection drop Confirm the input is HTTP and check -reconnect 1; inspect the log for the underlying network or server failure.
HTTP source reaches EOF but should be endless EOF handling Consider -reconnect_at_eof 1 only if reconnecting at EOF is intended for this source.
TCP or TLS connection errors Network connection failure For HTTP input, check -reconnect_on_network_error 1; also investigate the network and source endpoint.
HTTP 429, 503, or another status Server response, not simply a dropped connection Choose appropriate status codes or categories for -reconnect_on_http_error; consider the server’s Retry-After value.
FFmpeg stops despite reconnect flags Retry limit, unsupported option, or a failure outside HTTP reconnect handling Check version and local protocol help, retry limits, the full error, and whether the failing side is actually HTTP input.
Rain audio stutters, restarts, or does not resume where expected Reconnect is not seamless playback or exact-position recovery Check whether the source is finite or endless and inspect the input’s seek/restart behavior; EOF retry alone does not guarantee continuity.
