Set audio at the source first, check what your operating system sends to OBS, then use the OBS mixer fader for the final balance. Keep the loudest voice or music below clipping, monitor what OBS is actually receiving, and record and review a representative session before committing to a long stream. There is no single correct meter reading for every yoga stream: spoken instruction, instrumental music, microphones, rooms, and listening devices differ.
Set levels in the right order
- Identify your sources. In OBS, distinguish the instructor microphone from music or other desktop audio. Mute anything that should not be in the stream. Keep channel routing simple and confirm the intended sources in a test recording.
- Adjust the input at the source. If the microphone has a physical gain control, start there. Use a clean signal rather than trying to fix a distorted or noisy input with OBS filters.
- Check the operating-system input. Inspect the recording-device and application volume controls. Some devices have a useful operating range below 100%, and behavior varies by device. Check the meter in OBS to verify what it receives.
- Balance sources with the OBS mixer. Move the relevant source fader to balance voice and music. Speak at the distance and intensity you expect during class; test both quiet passages and the loudest musical section.
- Listen through the chain. Listen at the device if possible, then configure OBS Audio Monitoring in Advanced Audio Properties and listen through headphones. Check for hum, noise, channel imbalance, pumping, and music that masks instruction.
- Record and review. Record a representative session, including loud phrases, quiet instruction, music changes, and pauses. Play it back on a separate phone or computer at an ordinary listening volume. OBS recommends listening to a recording before going live: OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
Read the OBS meter without chasing a magic number
The OBS mixer meter is useful for spotting peaks and clipping, but it is not a complete measure of perceived or integrated loudness. OBS describes the moving main bar as a peak-program meter, the black indicator as an approximation of average loudness, and the peak-hold marker as preserving the recent maximum for 20 seconds. Watch the marker after a loud spoken phrase or musical transient, not just during a quiet moment. The meter’s green, yellow, and red zones are broad guidance; they do not define a yoga-stream loudness target. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
OBS’s technical guide provides calibration context, not a universal target for your content: it identifies -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level, near average speech in a calibrated equipment chain; -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level, with margin for meter and alignment uncertainty; and 0 dBFS as digital full scale, the maximum the output chain can handle. Keep the final signal below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion. These figures are from the OBS Project’s 2022 technical guide, not YouTube rules or yoga-specific loudness recommendations: OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.
For a mostly musical class, a cautious starting practice is to keep normal passages comfortably out of the red and leave headroom for the loudest moment. Choose the final balance by listening to a recording: speech should remain intelligible over music, and neither source should become harsh or disappear at ordinary playback volume.

Use filters only for a problem you can hear
OBS includes filters such as gain, noise suppression, and noise gate. Treat them as corrective tools, not substitutes for clean gain staging. A gate may reduce room noise during pauses, but an aggressive setting can cut soft speech or breathing. Compression can reduce dynamic swings, but there is no fixed setting that suits every voice, microphone, room, and music bed. Start with the cleanest source you can achieve, then make one change at a time and listen to the result. OBS’s overview describes its audio filters: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
If you are streaming to YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance is destination-specific. For stereo audio, it lists AAC or MP3, a 128 kbps audio bitrate, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate; it recommends RTMPS. Match sample rates across devices where practical and confirm OBS is using the intended audio device. OBS’s overview separately suggests around 160 kbps for streaming audio generally, or less when upload speed is constrained. That is general OBS guidance, not a replacement for YouTube’s platform recommendation. Do not confuse video bitrate settings with audio level or audio bitrate. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and monitor stream health during a test.

YouTube advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Use the planned scene, audio, and internet connection in your test rather than checking a silent or substantially different setup.
Test the 24/7 setup separately from audio
A clean meter does not establish that a home PC, connection, cooling arrangement, or power supply can run continuously. Test the actual setup and planned session duration, and check the destination’s stream-health messages while live. There is no India-specific OBS audio level in the official guidance cited here; the audio workflow is the same. Your network stability, heat, electricity continuity, and platform configuration must be assessed on your own equipment.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Common audio problems and fixes
- The meter reaches red or the sound distorts: lower the source gain first, then recheck the operating-system input and OBS fader. Test the loudest voice and music moments; lowering the OBS fader cannot repair distortion already present at the microphone.
- Speech is hard to understand over music: listen to the recording on a separate device and rebalance the microphone and music. Check quiet phrases as well as louder speech.
- Noise is obvious during pauses: inspect the microphone, room, and input gain before adding suppression. If using a gate, verify that it does not remove soft instruction or breathing.
- One channel is missing or sounds different: check source selection, channel assignment, and the recording itself. Keep routing simple until the intended stereo or mono behavior is confirmed.
- The stream sounds different from the OBS desk: monitor through OBS and review a recording on a separate viewer device at an ordinary listening volume. Headphones at the streaming PC alone do not show how the mix translates.
- A short test works, but a long run is uncertain: a short test only shows that the setup worked during that test. It does not prove continuous reliability for your PC, network, cooling, or power arrangement.
