You can run a continuous rain-and-thunder stream from a spare PC by sending a looping, rights-cleared audio-and-visual scene to YouTube through an encoder such as OBS. First confirm that your channel can livestream, then test the full setup on your actual home connection. A PC, home internet connection and YouTube ingest are not guaranteed to stay online without interruption, so plan for failures and decide separately how you will preserve a complete replay.
1. Check that your YouTube channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and check whether live streaming is available on your account. First-time activation may take time; confirm the current status in Studio rather than assuming you can start immediately.
Before building the stream, create or schedule an event in Live Control Room and make sure you can reach its preview. YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance describes sending video from encoding software using a stream URL and key, then checking the preview in Live Control Room.
2. Build a distinctive program with cleared rights
Use rain and thunder recordings and visuals you created yourself or have permission to use for worldwide livestreaming and archived use. YouTube’s livestream terms make the creator responsible for having the necessary rights, including music rights where applicable. A track labeled “free” is not automatically cleared for livestreaming, archiving or monetization. Keep copies of licenses, permissions and source files.

Technical ability to stream does not establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and expect original, authentic content; generic, repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible. Consider recording your own storm ambience, shaping the sound yourself, varying the scene thoughtfully and making distinct versions rather than repeatedly broadcasting an unchanged stock loop. These are creative practices, not a promise of monetization.
3. Set up the stream in YouTube Studio and your encoder
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live / Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Set the title, audience and visibility, then review the event settings before going live.
- Connect the encoder: In OBS or other encoder software, select YouTube if offered, or enter YouTube’s server URL and the stream key shown for the event. The key grants access to your stream; treat it like a password and reset it if exposed.
- Prepare the scene: Add your rain-and-thunder video or visual, and route the audio loop to the encoder. Check that the loop behaves as intended at its end and that the scene does not unexpectedly go black or silent.
- Check the preview before starting: Wait for the encoder signal and verify the Live Control Room preview before making the event public. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not establish a particular minimum PC specification, so assess your spare PC by testing its sustained encoding performance.
4. Choose resolution and bitrate for the connection you actually have
YouTube’s recommendations vary with codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, its current encoder settings list recommended video bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p30. These are recommendations, not minimum requirements or guarantees about any Indian ISP. For a mostly static ambience scene, 720p30 or 1080p30 can be sensible starting points if both the PC and sustained upload test can support the chosen setting.

- Protocol: Use RTMPS where available.
- Rate control: Use CBR.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3, and listen for clipping, excessive loudness and silence at loop boundaries.
Measure upload performance at the location and time you plan to stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom; total outgoing bitrate must fit the available upload capacity. If you configure a primary and backup encoder, allow for both bitrates plus that headroom. A speed-test peak cannot show that the connection will remain stable all night. If Live Control Room reports dropped frames or an unstable stream, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.
5. Run a full trial before leaving it unattended
Use an unlisted or private trial with the actual loop, audio, encoder settings and home network. Check each of the following before relying on it overnight:

- The Live Control Room preview has the expected image and sound, and the audio is neither clipped nor silent.
- The public-facing watch page works at the intended visibility; check access from your channel, a watch page and a mobile device.
- The PC can encode continuously without overheating, freezing or dropping frames.
- If you intend to record locally, the recording starts correctly and its file continues to grow.
- If you configured a backup encoder, test its failover instead of assuming it will take over successfully.
YouTube advises creators to monitor audio and video quality during a stream. A trial helps expose problems but cannot establish that the system will stay up indefinitely.
6. Plan around power, internet and encoder failures
A 24/7 stream can stop if the PC crashes, power fails, the router or modem fails, the ISP connection drops, the encoder stops or YouTube has an interruption. These are separate failure modes: backup power for the PC alone will not keep the router online or restore an unavailable ISP route.

If you use a UPS or inverter, size it for the measured load and the runtime you want, including network equipment if you expect it to stay online. There is no universal capacity or outage runtime that can be promised for Indian homes. Test the complete recovery path: what happens when power returns, the internet reconnects, or the encoder needs restarting? A backup internet connection is a separate consideration from backup power.

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise a complete archive for one uninterrupted event lasting longer than that. If preserving a replay matters, make a local recording and plan a deliberate stream-rotation strategy. Ending and restarting an event can interrupt the live session; the cited YouTube guidance does not guarantee seamless rollover.

DVR can let viewers pause or rewind when enabled, but availability and behavior should be checked in the current stream settings. Continuous transmission and retaining a complete archive are different goals: verify the local recording and any replay separately.
8. Costs and the cloud alternative
Using a spare PC avoids buying a new computer, but the local approach still depends on your electricity, internet service, equipment maintenance and time spent monitoring or recovering it. A cloud service shifts the always-on encoding and connection dependency away from your home, in exchange for a service cost and reliance on that provider. Compare those trade-offs with your own power, connection, archive and recovery needs rather than assuming either method guarantees uninterrupted delivery.
