To repeat a lecture without restarting your YouTube broadcast, turn on Loop for a single OBS Media Source, or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for several files. Keep OBS’s stream output running and do not use YouTube Live Control Room’s End Stream control. The video playback can repeat while the encoder feed and live event remain active; looping does not guarantee an uninterrupted network connection.
Choose the right OBS source

OBS does not establish that either choice is universally more reliable. The main differences are whether you need one file or a playlist, whether the order matters, and what should happen when the source is hidden. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents these source settings.
Loop one lecture video
- In OBS, select the scene used for the lecture output.
- In Sources, add a Media Source and select the local lecture video file.
- Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop.
- Review Restart playback when source becomes active. OBS documents that this setting restarts the file when the source becomes visible in the current scene. It is separate from Loop, which repeats the file when playback reaches its end.
Loop a playlist of lectures
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS says the VLC Video source is unavailable without VLC; match the architectures, so 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- In the lecture scene, add a VLC Video source and add the lecture files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist. If the lectures must play in a set order, leave Shuffle Playlist off.
- Set Visibility Behaviour for your scene workflow. OBS documents a default that stops playback while the source is not visible and restarts it when visible again. If playback should continue through scene switches, select a continue-playing behavior available in your installed version and test it before the event.
OBS scenes and sources determine the stream layout; changing what is visible in a scene can affect a source’s playback without ending the YouTube event. See the OBS Sources Guide for the scene-and-source basics.
Keep the YouTube live event active
- Start the OBS encoder feed using the stream URL and key associated with the YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain connecting an encoder; the stream key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it.
- Let the Media Source or VLC playlist reach its end and loop. Do not stop streaming in OBS just to replay the lecture.
- Do not select End Stream in Live Control Room unless you intend to end the event. YouTube documents stopping encoder content as a stream-ending action; for a scheduled event, its procedure also includes ending the stream in Live Control Room.
- Check the OBS output and the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Confirm picture and audio at a repeat boundary and after any scene switch. YouTube recommends previewing before going live and monitoring stream audio and video quality; see its live streaming tips.
The loop setting controls local media playback, not the encoder connection. If the stream drops because of a network or encoder problem, looping alone cannot keep the broadcast connected. YouTube’s live stream settings help covers stream keys, stream URLs, and auto-start/auto-stop settings.

Troubleshoot common loop problems
- The lecture restarts when you change scenes: inspect the source’s Visibility Behaviour and, for a Media Source, Restart playback when source becomes active. Those playback settings are distinct from YouTube stream status.
- The playlist repeats in an unexpected order: check that Shuffle Playlist is off.
- VLC Video is missing: install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS.
- You need to edit the playlist while it is playing: OBS’s published documentation does not guarantee whether live edits preserve the current playback position across versions and setups. Prepare the playlist before going live, or test the exact version and edit procedure first. The documentation does not establish that a playlist edit ends the YouTube broadcast.
- The YouTube event seems to have restarted or ended: check whether the encoder feed was stopped or End Stream was selected in Live Control Room. A media loop is a playback control, not an event control.
