To run a classroom video playlist as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, prepare a compatible FFmpeg concat playlist, and send FFmpeg’s output to the stream URL and key from YouTube. The playlist can repeat indefinitely with -stream_loop -1, but the computer, network connection, FFmpeg process, and YouTube ingest must remain available.
Check YouTube livestream eligibility first
Before preparing the playlist, confirm that the channel is verified and has not had a livestream restriction during the previous 90 days. If this is the channel’s first livestream, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned start. Create the stream in YouTube Studio and test it privately or as unlisted before making the classroom broadcast public. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the channel and stream setup requirements.
Prepare the classroom video playlist
Create a plain-text file named, for example, classroom.ffconcat. Its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, followed by one file directive for each video, in the order you want them to play:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'lesson-01.mp4'
file 'lesson-02.mp4'
file 'break-screen.mp4'
Keep the playlist and media files together and use relative paths where practical. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer treats the listed files as one virtual sequence and adjusts timestamps so each follows the previous one. For clean joins, every file needs the same streams, codecs, and time bases. Check the transitions, including audio, before relying on the playlist for a long broadcast.

Duration and path details
Incorrect or estimated durations can create timestamp gaps or artifacts. If you know a file’s duration accurately, the concat demuxer’s duration directive can override it. Its safe option defaults to 1, which rejects unsafe paths. Prefer portable relative paths; only set -safe 0 when necessary and only with a playlist you control. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for the file format and option behavior.
Create the YouTube encoder stream and protect its key
In YouTube Studio, create a live stream using the encoder workflow and copy the ingest URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room. The exact screen labels can change, so use the current stream details displayed for your channel. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script repository, logs, screenshots, or materials shared with students. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the stream.

Run FFmpeg with the concat playlist
This starting template loops the playlist indefinitely, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and requests 720p at 30 fps. Replace the final RTMPS address with the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube. It is an example, not a tested command for every FFmpeg build or media collection.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 1 -i classroom.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -b:v 4000k -maxrate 4000k -bufsize 8000k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_SERVER/STREAM_KEY'
What the main options do
-rereads the media at its intended playback rate rather than sending the whole playlist as fast as the machine can process it.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-f concat -safe 1 -i classroom.ffconcatselects the concat demuxer and reads the playlist while retaining the safer default path handling.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio in formats supported by YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest guidance.-r 30requests 30 frames per second;-g 60and-keyint_min 60set a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps.-b:v 4000k,-maxrate 4000k, and-bufsize 8000kconfigure a constant video bitrate target and buffer for this example.-f flvpackages the encoded stream for RTMP/RTMPS output.
Choose bitrate and keyframe settings for the actual stream
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. It supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, and allows up to 60 fps. For H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, YouTube’s current guidance recommends 8 Mbps and gives 4 Mbps as the stated minimum. The command’s 4 Mbps video setting is therefore the minimum cited for that particular resolution and frame rate, not a general quality recommendation. Choose settings appropriate to the source resolution and confirm the upload connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate reliably. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for different playback formats. RTMPS is recommended for encrypted transport. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings before choosing a different resolution or codec.

Test the broadcast before opening it to viewers
- Start FFmpeg with representative classroom material, including typical speech, music, silence, motion, and the playlist joins.
- Wait for the stream preview in YouTube Studio and inspect picture, audio, synchronization, and the stream-health messages.
- Confirm the intended privacy setting and only then begin the public broadcast.
- Monitor stream health and messages during the event, as YouTube recommends. Rehearse how the process and host will recover if FFmpeg stops or the connection drops.
The stream depends on the host computer staying awake, network service remaining stable, FFmpeg continuing to run, and YouTube ingest being available. YouTube’s guidance does not promise uninterrupted service or specify one universal process-recovery setup. Arrange local supervision and restart behavior that suits the computer and operating system you use.
Plan separately for the 24-hour archive
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That does not establish that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete archived recording. If classroom playback or recordkeeping requires an archive, plan for that separately and confirm the channel’s current YouTube Studio behavior before relying on it. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance describes the documented limit.

Troubleshoot common concat and stream failures
- FFmpeg rejects a playlist path: Keep media paths relative and use
-safe 1. If absolute or otherwise unsafe paths are unavoidable, use-safe 0only with a playlist you control. - Playback stutters or has artifacts at file joins: Check that each file has matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Verify durations and join points; normalize or transcode incompatible files before streaming.
- The video or audio quality is poor: Confirm the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate suit the content and available upload capacity. For H.264 720p30, YouTube’s cited guidance recommends 8 Mbps and lists 4 Mbps as the minimum; do not assume that minimum is suitable for every scene or format.
- YouTube shows an ingest or stream-health problem: Check the ingest URL and key against the active stream in YouTube Studio, verify the network can sustain the outgoing rate, and read the current health messages in the Live Control Room. Do not share the key while diagnosing.
- The stream stops when unattended: Check whether the computer slept, the network disconnected, or the FFmpeg process exited. Rehearse restart and host recovery rather than assuming a 24/7 process will self-heal.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining an always-on computer and connection at school or home is the hard part, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can this FFmpeg concat method stream to YouTube all day and night?

YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; that guidance does not promise one complete archive for a 24/7 broadcast.
