It can process UHD video up to 4K, but whether a particular 4K source, codec, output package, and number of simultaneous encodes will work depends on the exact input path, output configuration, and deployment capacity. A typical workflow takes a live signal in, configures an event to encode and package it, then sends the resulting streams to downstream delivery systems.
What AWS Elemental Live does in a 4K workflow
Elemental Live is an encoder within a larger contribution-to-delivery chain, not a complete consumer streaming service. AWS describes it as a real-time encoding and transcoding product that runs on customer-premises hardware or virtual machines. It transforms incoming live video and associated media into configured outputs for downstream systems.
A typical chain is source signal → Elemental Live → origin service or packager → content delivery network (CDN) → playback device or website. The encoder handles the configured ingest and output work; the other services deliver and play the stream.
How an Elemental Live event works
An event groups the input configuration and output groups that define what Elemental Live ingests and produces. The exact workflow depends on the source interface, destination, packaging, and playback requirements.

- Identify the source. Establish the signal format and the interface through which it will reach the system. Relevant details include resolution, frame rate, color space, bit depth, chroma sampling, and associated audio, captions, or metadata.
- Configure the event input. The input identifies and ingests the source content. Confirm that the required source format and interface are supported together; a general claim of 4K support does not establish compatibility for every input path.
- Choose output groups. Each output group defines the destination format and packaging. Select the group and container for the origin or packager and the playback endpoints you need to support.
- Set the video encodes. Configure codec and quality parameters for each output stream, including rate control and bitrate, frame rate, GOP, quantization, lookahead, and the density-versus-quality balance where applicable.
- Start the event and validate the chain. Confirm that the source is ingested, outputs reach their intended downstream systems, and playback works on the required endpoints. For production, include the intended redundancy and recovery design.
What 4K UHD support means—and what it does not
AWS documents support for SD, HD, and UHD resolutions, with UHD extending up to 4K. Color space and resolution are separate properties: Elemental Live supports SDR and HDR color spaces, and SDR can be paired with SD, HD, or UHD. HDR is typically paired with HD or UHD. That broad capability does not by itself guarantee that every combination of input, output group, frame rate, bit depth, or chroma format is supported.
SMPTE 2110 input
For SMPTE 2110 specifically, AWS documents uncompressed video at SD, HD, and 4K, with 4:2:2 chroma sampling and 10-bit depth. AWS also says Precision Time Protocol (PTP) locking is necessary for proper synchronization. Without synchronization, media streams may become unsynchronized during processing. These details apply to the SMPTE 2110 path, not automatically to every interface.

H.264 and HEVC output choices
Codec support depends on the output group and container. AWS’s live-output matrix lists H.264 and H.265 (HEVC) for DASH and both standard and fMP4 HLS; RTMP lists H.264. Do not assume that a codec available for one package is available for every other output type. Check the exact output-group and container combination against AWS’s live output codec matrix.
HEVC support and licensing
AWS distinguishes HEVC support by direction, chroma sampling, bit depth, profile, and output format. Its documentation lists HEVC input at 4:2:0 and 4:2:2, each in 8- and 10-bit forms. For HEVC output, 4:2:0 requires the HC license, while 4:2:2 requires purchase of the BCE license pack. AWS notes that raw outputs and MPEG-2 transport streams support both 4:2:0 and 4:2:2; other containers support only 4:2:0. Verify the current format and license requirements for your specific workflow in AWS’s HEVC support documentation.

Planning capacity for 4K encoding
4K encoding can consume substantial compute capacity. AWS identifies aggregate pixels per second across all outputs as a key performance factor. Resolution, frame rate, color depth, and rate-control choices affect workload; its guidance also places HEVC above AVC (H.264) in relative processing demand. This is directional guidance, not a universal throughput benchmark.
Plan for the total rendition workload rather than counting only source channels. Each rendition requires an output encode. AWS cautions that an appliance may handle only one 4K rendition, depending on its density capabilities, while lower-resolution renditions may allow several outputs depending on the system. No general 4K channel count can be promised without a specific model and matching configuration. AWS’s performance guidance describes the factors to assess.

Compatible output groups can sometimes share an encode when they use the same video encode, reducing compute demand. Treat sharing as a configuration-specific design option, not an assumption that dissimilar outputs are free of additional encoding load.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Quality controls and CPU-versus-GPU choices
Quality parameters are configured per output stream. The useful trade-off is image quality versus bitrate and compute demand, alongside latency and playback-device compatibility. AWS lists rate-control mode and bitrate, frame rate, GOP, quantization, lookahead, and density-versus-quality balance among the relevant controls. Tune against the requirements of the destination and the capacity of the selected appliance or VM; a setting suitable for one output does not guarantee the same result across another codec or rendition stack.

AWS says listed codecs can deliver equivalent video quality at equivalent operating points on CPU-only and GPU-enabled appliances, and documents GPU acceleration for H.264 and HEVC on GPU-enabled systems. Equivalent quality does not imply equal capacity or cost. Compare the exact model or VM configuration against the intended workload using AWS’s CPU and GPU codec documentation.
Deployment checklist
- Document the incoming signal: interface, resolution, frame rate, color space, chroma sampling, and bit depth.
- Verify that the chosen input path supports that exact signal format; for SMPTE 2110, plan and validate PTP synchronization.
- List every required destination and playback endpoint, then confirm its output group, container, and codec compatibility.
- Confirm HEVC license requirements for the intended output’s chroma sampling and container.
- Estimate the full rendition stack’s aggregate workload, including resolution, frame rate, color depth, codec, and rate-control settings.
- Get capacity confirmation for the specific appliance or VM configuration. Do not use a generic 4K encode count as a sizing promise.
- Design and test redundancy, downstream delivery, and playback as parts of the end-to-end workflow.
When a different kind of streaming workflow fits
Elemental Live is documented for professional live encoding pipelines with configured inputs, output groups, and downstream origin, packaging, and delivery systems. It is distinct from a service that keeps uploaded recordings playing continuously as a YouTube live stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a 24/7 YouTube stream built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo offers a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud keeps the stream running without a computer at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. Video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
