YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 Indian music channel, divide the schedule into consecutive broadcasts that end with a margin before that limit, verify each replay in YouTube Studio, and record a separate local backup. The margin is a practical precaution, not a duration YouTube guarantees.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 stream?
It may save individual broadcasts, but a single uninterrupted 24-hour stream is not a dependable way to get a complete YouTube replay. YouTube’s guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The guidance does not establish that a stream lasting exactly 12 hours is safely within the automatic-archive rule, which is stated as “shorter than 12 hours.” YouTube’s archive guidance does not prescribe a specific session length or guarantee every replay.
For reliable preservation, treat the hosted replay and a local recording as separate copies. End each broadcast before the cutoff, check that its replay appears, and keep a recording on storage you control. YouTube itself recommends recording a local archive as a backup.
Set up consecutive broadcasts
Choose a safe session length
Plan each session to end with a margin before 12 hours rather than aiming at the boundary. YouTube does not specify how large that margin should be; it is prudent operational advice to leave time for a controlled stop and the next start. Schedule the next session so your channel can continue its 24/7 programming, allowing for the brief transition needed to end one broadcast and begin another.

End, verify, and continue
- Start the first broadcast and note its start time so the planned end remains comfortably under 12 hours.
- End that broadcast before the cutoff. Start the next session as needed to maintain the schedule; do not assume that one broadcast must contain the entire day.
- After each session ends, open YouTube Studio and confirm the replay is present and plays with usable audio and video. Do not treat an expected archive as a verified copy.
- Repeat the check for every session, then confirm your local recording files are also complete and playable.
Archive availability and processing can vary. If a replay is missing or incomplete, the local recording is the independent copy to use; the cited YouTube guidance does not promise that every eligible stream will archive successfully.
Record a local backup automatically
A local archive protects you if YouTube’s hosted replay is missing, incomplete, or later unavailable. Use a recording method that can run unattended for the planned session, and check that it is actually writing files rather than assuming that starting the broadcast also starts a local recording. YouTube recommends a local archive but does not prescribe a particular application or unattended automation setup.

- Before relying on the workflow, make a short test recording and play it back to confirm the music and video are present.
- During each session, check that the recording file is growing and that audio remains audible.
- After the session, verify the file plays through its end before deleting source material or treating the YouTube replay as your only copy.
- Keep enough storage for the resolution, bitrate, recording format, and retention period you choose. There is no universal capacity figure: estimate from your actual recording settings and how long you plan to keep files.
An external hard drive is one possible place to keep local archive files. Choose capacity based on your own recording settings and retention needs; no particular drive size or model follows from YouTube’s general backup recommendation.
Review YouTube Live API recording settings if you automate broadcasts
If your broadcast workflow uses the YouTube Live Streaming API, review its recording and archive controls before going live. The API documents recordFromStart, enableArchive, DVR, auto-start, and auto-stop settings. It says recordFromStart starts recording after a broadcast becomes live and defaults to true. These controls do not override YouTube’s warning that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as a complete archive.

Some broadcast settings have state-dependent update restrictions, so do not assume they can all be changed after a broadcast is live. Check the LiveBroadcasts API documentation for the setting and broadcast state relevant to your automation.
DVR is not an archive backup
DVR gives viewers playback controls such as pausing, rewinding, and fast-forwarding; it is not a separate durable recording. Available controls and limits can vary by latency and device. OBS’s YouTube streaming guide discusses DVR behavior, but enabling DVR does not replace either the hosted replay check or a local file.

Clear music rights for both the live stream and replay
Before scheduling Indian music—whether bhajans, kirtan, Gurbani, Hindi music, or other repertoire—confirm that your rights cover the live broadcast and the resulting replay in the territories where viewers may access it. Rights for a live performance do not automatically establish permission for an archived recording; check the terms that apply to the compositions and recordings you use.
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A stream can be interrupted or terminated when a match is found. Even if you have a licence, the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for the live stream to avoid interruption. An archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after it ends. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. This platform guidance describes YouTube’s detection and enforcement process; it is not a ruling on Indian copyright law or a substitute for your licence terms.

Choose between YouTube’s replay and a local copy
| Option | What it preserves | Main limitation | What you need to manage |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube-hosted replay | A replay associated with the ended broadcast, when YouTube archives it. | YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; archiving is not guaranteed. | Split sessions, then check each replay in YouTube Studio. |
| Local recording | A separate file under your control, independent of whether YouTube creates a replay. | It does not appear as a YouTube replay automatically, and it uses local storage. | Unattended recording, file checks, storage capacity, and retention. |
For preservation, these are complementary rather than competing methods: use YouTube’s replay for convenient on-platform access and retain a local copy as your backup.
Troubleshoot common archive failures
No YouTube replay appears
- Possible cause: The broadcast exceeded 12 hours. Fix: Use shorter consecutive sessions and verify every ended session; recover the content from the local recording if available.
- Possible cause: The broadcast ended but the replay has not appeared yet. Fix: Check YouTube Studio again after processing, but do not discard the local copy while waiting.
The replay is incomplete or the local file is missing
- Possible cause: The stream was treated as the only recording, or the local recorder did not run or write successfully. Fix: Test the local workflow before relying on it, confirm files grow during each session, and play them through after recording.
- Possible cause: Storage ran out or the recording stopped. Fix: Check available space and recording status before the next session; estimate capacity from actual settings and retention needs.
The stream is interrupted or the replay receives a claim
- Possible cause: YouTube matched music to third-party content during the live broadcast or after it ended. Fix: Confirm that permissions cover both live use and replay, and ask the rights holder about channel allowlisting where licensed music is involved.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube music stream running without leaving a computer on at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running with your computer off, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and streams your upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Cloud playback does not replace checking YouTube replays or keeping a separate local archive, and music rights still apply. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
