The phrase “waiting for viewers” is not a documented YouTube diagnosis, so it does not identify one guaranteed cause. Check whether YouTube is receiving data, whether your encoder is producing a clean feed, and whether your upload connection is working; the right fix depends on what you find.
First, identify what “rerun” means in your setup
A gaming “rerun” might mean restarting a live broadcast, replaying an archived stream, or sending recorded gameplay as a new live stream. Those are not necessarily the same problem. Before changing settings, establish which method you are using and whether the message appears in YouTube Studio, your encoder, or somewhere else.
- External encoder: A computer program creates and sends the gameplay stream. YouTube lists encoder streaming as a commonly used method for gameplay.
- Console broadcast: A supported PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo console sends the broadcast directly. Encoder-specific stream-key steps may not apply.
- Mobile or webcam: These are also available YouTube streaming methods, but their controls differ from an external encoder.

Check the actual stream status before changing anything
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and note the exact status or error. Check whether the broadcast is scheduled, previewing, or live, and whether YouTube is receiving stream data. The API describes noData as a state where the backend has no information about stream health, and error as a state where the video cannot be broadcast to viewers. Neither should be inferred just from the words “waiting for viewers.”

- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the affected broadcast.
- Record the exact status and any error shown.
- Check whether the preview is available and whether YouTube indicates that it is receiving data.
- Keep the broadcast’s setup method in mind: encoder, console, mobile, or webcam.
These distinctions are covered in Google’s LiveStreams and Life of a Broadcast documentation. The documented 5–10-second transition in a particular broadcast lifecycle is not a promised wait time for the “waiting for viewers” message.
If you use an encoder, check its key and output
Refresh the stream key if the encoder cannot start
If the third-party encoder fails to start, open the broadcast’s Stream section in Live Control Room, copy the stream key, and replace the key in your encoder. If your software signs into YouTube without asking for a key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team rather than applying the key steps blindly.

Inspect the encoder feed and computer load
Update the encoder to its latest version. Look at its preview and, if available, a local recording to see whether the picture and sound are correct. Check the encoder’s error messages and CPU load in its live dashboard. If the output still looks wrong after these checks, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder.
If the encoder output is healthy, test your upload connection
A clean encoder preview does not prove that YouTube is receiving a stable feed. Run an internet connection speed test and focus on the outbound connection. If the test indicates a connection problem, contact your internet service provider. Use the troubleshooting path that matches your broadcast method

YouTube identifies encoder, console, mobile, and webcam streaming in its live streaming setup overview. Its reviewed troubleshooting instructions most directly address third-party encoders.
If it still will not become viewable
Report the continuing problem to YouTube with useful diagnostic details rather than only the phrase “waiting for viewers.” Include the exact Live Control Room status or error, your streaming method, the encoder name and version if you use one, what the local preview or recording showed, and the results of your connection check. YouTube’s troubleshooting page asks users with a continuing issue to let its team know.
