YouTube Live’s documented HLS workflow expects an encoder to push an HLS stream to YouTube’s ingest URL. Its setup instructions do not describe pasting in a remote .m3u8 playlist and having YouTube pull from it. To use a playlist URL, you need a relay or encoder that can read that source and separately publish HLS output that meets YouTube’s ingest requirements.
What “use an HLS playlist as a source” means
An HLS playlist, usually a .m3u8 URL, describes media for a player to retrieve. YouTube HLS ingest is a destination: an encoder sends media segments to YouTube. Those are different roles. YouTube’s official setup explains how to push HLS to its endpoint, not an end-to-end method for YouTube to fetch an arbitrary public playlist. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
The practical chain is: source playlist → relay or encoder that supports that exact playlist input → compliant HLS output pushed to YouTube. Depending on the source and the relay, it may need to decode or remux the media before creating the output segments. Verify support for both ends; a tool’s ability to play an HLS stream does not prove it can publish HLS to YouTube.
Set up YouTube HLS ingest
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open Stream and create a stream key using the HLS protocol.
- Copy the HLS Stream URL shown by Live Control Room. It begins with HTTPS, and YouTube says the stream key is already included in this URL. Do not publish or share the URL: it contains stream credentials. If your encoder’s YouTube HLS preset asks for credentials differently, follow that encoder’s instructions.
- In the encoder or relay, configure HLS output to push to the copied URL. YouTube recommends selecting the encoder’s YouTube HLS preset if one is available.
- Set the output to meet YouTube’s HLS requirements below, then start the encoder. Wait for a preview in Live Control Room, check audio, video and stream health, and select Go live when ready. YouTube’s encoder workflow is outlined in its live-stream setup guide.
HLS output requirements for YouTube
YouTube’s HLS setup page specifies these destination requirements; configure the encoder’s output, not the source playlist, to match them.

- Playlist: rolling, with no more than 5 outstanding segments.
- Transport: HTTPS POST or PUT.
- Byte-range playlists: unsupported.
- Encryption: unsupported except for the encryption provided by HTTPS transport.
Copy the live ingest URL from Live Control Room rather than using a hard-coded example. YouTube’s interface and stream credentials can change.
Choose a relay that supports both sides of the job
Before committing to a workflow, check the exact product, version and configuration against your source and destination. YouTube lists Cobalt encoders, Harmonic, Mirillis Action, OBS and Telestream as options supporting HLS output on its HLS setup page. That list is not confirmation that every build or setup can ingest a remote playlist URL.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Can it fetch or receive your specific playlist, including any authentication or variant-playlist behavior it requires?
- Can it publish HLS to YouTube’s endpoint using HTTPS POST or PUT, with TS segments and a rolling playlist of no more than five outstanding segments?
- Can it handle the source codec and container directly, or must it decode or remux before output?
- Does it reconnect or recover if the playlist, network or YouTube connection is interrupted?
- What latency does the full relay path introduce, and can you test the preview and health indicators before the stream matters?
If a tool cannot accept the source playlist and push compliant HLS output, it is not a complete bridge for this workflow. Use a different relay or source, or choose another supported ingest route.
HLS versus RTMPS, latency and quality settings
YouTube positions HLS for HDR and codecs that RTMP does not support. For ordinary live streams, its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, the encrypted RTMP transport. HLS is segment-based, has higher latency than RTMP, and disables YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option. YouTube puts it plainly: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” See its guidance on RTMPS and live stream settings.

Use HLS when its codec or HDR support is needed and the delay is acceptable. Otherwise, check whether RTMPS supports your production’s codec and latency needs. For bitrate, select the current YouTube recommendation for your chosen resolution and codec rather than applying one number to every setup; the settings are resolution- and codec-dependent in YouTube’s encoder settings guide. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
HDR-specific HLS
For YouTube’s HDR HLS path, the source and encoder must preserve the required HDR properties: HEVC, 10-bit video, BT.2020 color primaries, and compatible PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. YouTube’s HDR guidance says to leave manual resolution off for the described HLS setup. Check the actual color metadata through the chain; a label such as “HDR” alone does not establish that the output metadata is correct.

Test before going live and troubleshoot
Run a test using audio and movement similar to the planned program. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream, the preview has both picture and sound, and stream health is acceptable before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its encoder settings guidance.
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no stream | The encoder is not pushing to the HLS ingest URL, or the wrong URL or protocol is configured. | Copy the current HLS Stream URL from Live Control Room and verify the encoder is publishing HLS over HTTPS POST or PUT. |
| The source plays locally, but cannot be sent to YouTube | Playback of the source playlist is supported, but HLS push output is not. | Verify both playlist input and YouTube HLS push output for the exact tool version; choose a relay that supports both. |
| Ingest fails or output is rejected | The output may violate YouTube’s HLS format or playlist requirements. | Check for TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and no byte-range playlist or unsupported encryption. |
| Stream is more delayed than expected | HLS delivers segmented video and does not use YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option. | Decide whether HLS-specific codec or HDR support is worth the additional latency; otherwise assess RTMPS. |
| HDR looks wrong or is not recognized as HDR | Codec, bit depth or color metadata may not match YouTube’s HDR requirements. | Verify HEVC, 10-bit, BT.2020 and PQ or HLG metadata through the encoder, using YouTube’s HDR requirements as the reference. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than relaying a particular remote HLS playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from videos you upload. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not take a remote HLS playlist URL as its source.
