Use OBS with a VLC Video source to play a playlist, then prepare visuals that match the same song order—or render each song as a complete audio-and-video file. OBS can loop or shuffle playlist items, but its documented playlist controls do not automatically make visuals change with each song or react to the music. Test the full sequence before leaving it live. First, make sure you have permission to broadcast every recording and underlying work, including any archived replay.
Choose how the visuals will change
The reliable approach depends on whether you need visuals tied to particular songs or simply changing imagery during a continuous music stream.

For a shuffled playlist, song-specific visuals must remain associated with the correct songs; a fixed visual sequence may no longer match shuffled audio. Use an ordered playlist when the visual sequence is planned in advance, or test the specific automation you intend to use.
Before you configure OBS: rights and YouTube readiness
Clear the music for the intended broadcast
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions put responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Confirm the permitted use, territories, monetization if relevant, and whether the permission covers an archived replay.

In India, the Copyright Act defines communication to the public to include making a work or performance available for the public to see or hear, and separately addresses broadcast reproduction rights. Those provisions make the rights chain relevant; they do not determine whether a particular track or playlist is cleared for your stream. A consumer music subscription, purchased copy, or public upload does not by itself establish permission for this live broadcast and replay. Confirm the scope with the relevant rights holders or qualified counsel.
Enable live streaming and plan for matching checks
YouTube says first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it ahead of your planned launch in YouTube Studio, and allow time to create or schedule the stream and test the encoder connection.

YouTube’s live Content ID matching guidance explains that a match can first trigger a warning; if matching continues, YouTube may replace the stream with a static image without sound or terminate it. Eligibility to submit content to live matching has conditions including global rights and exclusive ownership. A Content ID policy or an assumption that music is licensed is not proof that your specific broadcast has the necessary rights.
Set up a playlist in OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Prepare the sequence. Organize the rights-cleared audio files in the intended order. Decide whether the playlist will be ordered or shuffled before designing song-specific visuals.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist. OBS documents playlist looping and shuffle controls. VLC must be installed for this source to appear; on 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
- Prepare and associate visuals. Add or prepare imagery for the songs, or create complete audiovisual files before streaming. Check how your chosen source or scene arrangement behaves when the VLC playlist moves to its next item. The documented VLC controls establish playlist playback, not an automatic per-song visual-matching feature.
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open the encoder setup. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder; treat the key as a credential and do not share it publicly. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key—or use the connection method offered by the current YouTube and OBS interfaces. If the setup requires a custom server, use the stream URL supplied for that stream. Do not reuse or publish the key.
- Set and test encoder output. Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists a minimum bitrate of 5 Mbps and recommends 10 Mbps; these are technical settings, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for other output formats.
- Start with a test. Start the encoder, wait for the YouTube preview, and check the stream before sharing it with viewers. Play representative audio and motion, confirm that the playlist loops as intended, and verify that the visual change occurs at the right song boundary.
Test continuity and monitor the live stream
A looping playlist is not a guarantee of a continuous 24/7 broadcast. OBS documents playback features, not round-the-clock uptime, and YouTube does not promise that a particular encoder setup will run indefinitely without interruption.

- Test a representative range of songs, including a playlist transition and the loop point.
- Listen for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly overlapping audio; watch for black frames, frozen visuals, and mismatched song artwork.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream health messages while the encoder is running.
- Test the recovery steps you would use after an internet, computer, encoder, or YouTube interruption before advertising the channel as always on.
- Keep an eye on YouTube’s live Content ID notices as well as technical stream health; a technically healthy encoder does not resolve a rights claim.

Troubleshooting common problems
