There is no fixed storage requirement: it depends on the bitrate and duration of the video files you keep, not simply on the fact that your channel streams around the clock. As a planning example, YouTube’s recommended 1080p SDR upload bitrate of 8 Mbps works out to about 3.6 GB per hour of video, while its 4K SDR recommendation of 35–45 Mbps works out to about 15.75–20.25 GB per hour. Multiply the hourly estimate by the hours you plan to retain, then allow for audio, project files, alternate exports, and backups.
Estimate storage from the files you will keep
Use the rendered files’ actual average bitrate when you can. If you do not yet have representative exports, YouTube’s upload recommendations provide useful example inputs—not a required bitrate for a cartoon channel and not a measurement of your files.
For an estimate in decimal gigabytes:
Storage in GB = bitrate in Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000 × hours retained
The formula estimates video data. It does not include extra capacity for audio and container overhead, project files, alternate exports, or backup copies.

What YouTube’s bitrate recommendations imply
YouTube Help recommends MP4 as the upload container and H.264 as the video codec. Its bitrate figures below apply to uploads; your own export settings and resulting file sizes may differ. The cited guidance is YouTube’s official page, accessed in 2026: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

These are arithmetic estimates using the recommended video bitrate alone and decimal GB. They are not YouTube-published storage figures or measurements of a real channel.

Frame rate and HDR change the example bitrate
For SDR at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps), YouTube lists 12 Mbps for 1080p and 53–68 Mbps for 4K. At standard frame rates, its HDR recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p and 44–56 Mbps for 4K. YouTube also lists stereo audio at 384 kbps. Use the bitrate that matches the files you actually retain; do not apply a 1080p standard-frame-rate estimate to a higher-bitrate or HDR export.
Plan for your retention period
Multiply the per-hour estimate by the total hours of unique material you keep. For continuous, unique programming, 24 hours a day for 365 days is 8,760 hours. At the assumptions in the table, that would amount to about 31.5 TB for 1080p SDR at 8 Mbps, or about 138–177.4 TB for 4K SDR at 35–45 Mbps. These annual figures assume no deletion and are projections from the bitrate formula, not figures published by YouTube.

If you keep only a rolling archive, use its retained hours instead. For example, a seven-day archive of unique, uninterrupted programming is 168 hours: multiply your hourly estimate by 168. If you loop existing videos, streaming continuously does not mean you need a new 24 hours of files every day. Your library size is determined by the unique files you keep, while the broadcast can still run around the clock.
Include the rest of your archive
- Audio and file overhead: the video-only formula does not account for the audio track or container overhead. YouTube’s recommendation lists stereo audio at 384 kbps, but your own files may use different audio settings.
- Production materials: add any source projects, assets, alternate language versions, and alternate renders you intend to retain.
- Backups: decide how many copies you need and include each in your capacity plan. A second copy doubles the space needed for the files copied; further copies add capacity in the same way.
- Room to grow: estimate from a representative sample of finished exports and leave capacity for planned additions rather than treating the video-only estimate as a complete drive size.
There is no universal overhead percentage established by YouTube’s upload guidance. Choose and label your own allowance based on the files and backup workflow you will actually use.

Measure your own exports before buying storage
- Export a representative sample. Match the resolution, frame rate, SDR or HDR format, codec, and quality settings you expect to use for the channel.
- Check the file size and duration. Divide the file’s size in GB by its duration in hours to get a practical per-hour estimate for that export. For a mixed library, sample several typical files.
- Multiply by retained hours. Count unique footage, not repeated play time, if the same files will be looped.
- Add production files and copies. Include project files, alternate exports, and every backup copy in the total.
- Choose the storage workflow. Decide whether the working library needs to be online, portable, or backed up elsewhere. The bitrate calculation estimates capacity; it does not establish which drive or cloud service is right for you.
Keep the library separate from the live-stream setup
Storage planning answers how much space your retained video files need. It is separate from the question of how the videos are played to YouTube: a continuously broadcast schedule can reuse a smaller collection of files, while archiving every new hour of unique programming steadily increases the library.
