For a finished podcast episode, add the local recording to an OBS Studio Media Source, pair an audio-only episode with a title card or other visual, and send OBS to YouTube through Live Control Room. For a live podcast conversation, use OBS audio-input sources for the host’s microphone instead. The two workflows share the YouTube encoder setup, but their audio sources and rehearsal checks differ.
Choose the right workflow
| Decision | Prerecorded episode | Live podcast conversation |
|---|---|---|
| Main OBS source | Media Source with the local audio or video file | Microphone or interface audio input, plus camera or graphics sources as needed |
| Visual | Still image, title card, or the episode video | Camera, guest layout, graphics, or a simple static scene |
| Audio routing | Playback from the OBS media source | Selected microphone inputs; check the Audio Mixer meters |
| Optional gear | Usually none beyond the Mac and an intentional visual | A microphone; headphones for monitoring; an interface or mixer for more complex inputs |
| Rehearsal focus | File playback, visual, levels, and whether looping is intended | Input selection, echo, levels, camera, and guest mix |
A USB microphone, headphones, mixer, or audio interface is not required just to play a prerecorded episode. Consider those only if the production needs live speech, monitoring, or multiple microphone inputs.
Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the Mac mini
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not wait until the event day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Install OBS Studio and check compatibility. OBS lists Intel or Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 Big Sur or later as its macOS baseline. Meeting the baseline does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene will run smoothly; use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and verify your actual setup in a rehearsal. See OBS system requirements.
- Use a stable network connection. Ethernet is a sensible option when available. Measure outbound upload capacity, not only download speed, and leave the headroom described under stream settings below.
Mac mini ports depend on model and configuration. Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications list front USB-C ports and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, plus rear Ethernet, HDMI, and Thunderbolt ports; check the specifications for your exact machine before choosing peripherals. The computer’s ports do not replace the OBS scene or YouTube encoder setup. See Apple’s Mac mini specifications.
Create the YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the event. Choose the encoder option rather than a webcam workflow.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key from Live Control Room. If configuring a custom destination, use the server URL and key YouTube provides.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Anyone with the key may be able to send video to your stream, so do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Start OBS streaming and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the correct event is selected before starting the public broadcast.
Build an OBS scene for a prerecorded episode
- Add a visual. In the Sources box, select + and choose an image source for a still cover or branded card. Arrange it in the scene and check that it fills the canvas without covering important text.
- Add the episode file. Select + > Media Source, create a source, and browse to the local episode. OBS documents common formats including MP3, AAC, WAV, MP4, MOV, and MKV. Confirm the specific file plays correctly; container and encoding combinations can behave differently.
- Choose playback behavior deliberately. Enable looping only if the episode should repeat. For a one-time broadcast, leave looping off and decide what viewers should see or hear after playback ends. Rehearse that end state instead of assuming the stream will stop with the file.
- Check levels and sync. Play the source in OBS and watch the Audio Mixer. Listen through headphones if available; verify the episode is audible and the visual matches the intended broadcast.
For an audio-only episode, the image or title card gives viewers a visual while the file supplies the sound. For a video episode, use the video file as the Media Source and check framing, orientation, and whether any on-screen text is readable at the output resolution.

Set up OBS for a live podcast conversation
- Connect the microphone or audio interface before opening or configuring OBS, then add an Audio Input Capture source to the scene or select the intended device in OBS audio settings.
- Speak at normal volume and confirm the correct Audio Mixer meter moves. Listen for clipping, room noise, or an absent channel before sending the event live.
- If using a camera, add and position it in the scene, then verify framing and lighting in the preview. Add guest audio and graphics only as needed for the production.
- Avoid capturing the same device globally and again as a scene source; OBS warns that duplicate capture can cause echo.
OBS supports audio input and output capture sources on macOS. Its built-in macOS Audio Capture Source is documented for OBS Studio 30 and later on macOS 13 Ventura and later, including capture of desktop audio or a single application. Older setups may need audio-routing software and manual configuration. If the episode is a local file, an OBS Media Source is the more direct route than capturing another app’s system audio.
Choose stream settings and check upload capacity
- Protocol: Use RTMPS when configuring the YouTube destination.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube recommends AAC or MP3. Its current encoder guidance recommends stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. These are platform recommendations, not performance test results.
- Upload headroom: YouTube advises that available upload bandwidth exceed the aggregate outgoing bitrate by 20%. Check outbound capacity under realistic network conditions and account for other devices sharing the connection.
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help select settings for the Mac and connection, but it cannot replace an end-to-end rehearsal. The best resolution and frame rate depend on the episode source, machine, and upload connection; avoid choosing settings that the source cannot benefit from or the network cannot sustain. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s streaming tips.

Rehearse, go live, and archive the episode
- Prepare ahead. YouTube recommends having the encoder ready at least two hours before an event and starting at least 15 minutes beforehand.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal where appropriate. OBS recommends a short test stream or recording before the first real event. Confirm file playback, scene transitions, sound, and the intended ending.
- Check Live Control Room. Wait for the encoder preview, verify the event page and audio/video, then start the event from YouTube when ready.
- Monitor during transmission. Watch the OBS meters and YouTube preview/status, and listen for silence, distortion, echo, or unexpected looping.
- End intentionally. Stop the event in YouTube and stop sending from OBS as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify that the archive is available before relying on it as your only copy.
See YouTube’s live-stream testing guidance and YouTube’s live archive information.
Respect copyright and YouTube’s content rules
Only stream audio, music, artwork, and video you own or are authorized to use. A podcast episode can contain third-party music, clips, or guest material that is not cleared for a public live broadcast, even if it was previously published elsewhere. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright requirements, and do not treat a successful rehearsal as permission to use material. Reused or minimally changed material may also affect channel monetization decisions; the stream key and encoder settings do not change those rules.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | Live streaming is not enabled yet, OBS is not sending, or the destination/key is wrong | Check channel eligibility and activation, confirm the selected event, then recheck the server and stream key in OBS. |
| Episode video appears but there is no sound | The media source is muted, its audio is not routed, or the wrong file/source is playing | Watch the OBS Audio Mixer while the episode plays; inspect source mute and confirm the file’s audio in a local rehearsal. |
| Live host audio echoes | The same input may be captured globally and again in a scene, or monitoring may feed back | Remove duplicate device capture and check monitoring/output routing; test with headphones. |
| Stream stutters or drops frames | Upload capacity, encoder load, or scene complexity may exceed what the setup can sustain | Check OBS statistics and outbound network conditions, reduce demanding output settings, simplify the scene, and rehearse again. |
| Audio-only episode ends and the screen goes blank or changes unexpectedly | The Media Source end behavior or scene lacks a persistent visual | Keep a still image in the scene and test what happens at file end; enable looping only when repetition is intended. |
| Mac app audio is missing | The capture method may not match the OBS/macOS version | Check whether OBS 30+ and macOS 13+ are available for the built-in macOS Audio Capture Source; for a local episode use Media Source instead. |
