For a mostly static fireplace loop, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval and 5 Mbps video bitrate. This is a practical starting point, not a YouTube-mandated preset. Use a stable upload connection with at least 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate, test the loop’s picture and sound before going live, and prioritize reliability over low latency for a non-interactive ambience stream.
Recommended settings for a fireplace loop
| Setting | Starting value | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p, 30 fps | A sensible balance for a relatively calm scene. YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate at this setting is 5 Mbps. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A supported option with a published YouTube bitrate recommendation for the chosen resolution and frame rate. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube specifies constant bitrate for live encoder settings. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. It is a recommendation, not a guarantee of stream quality under every source or network condition. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz stereo | YouTube lists AAC and MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and includes 44.1 kHz stereo in its advanced guidance. |
| Scan and color (SDR) | Progressive scan; Rec. 709 | YouTube’s advanced guidance specifies square pixels, progressive scan and Rec. 709 for SDR. |
These values follow YouTube’s encoder guidance, which lists recommendations by codec, resolution and frame rate. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table when choosing a different codec or output format; the figures above are not interchangeable across settings.
Choose 30 fps or 60 fps
For a mostly static fireplace, 1080p30 is usually the more practical starting point: it uses YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate of 5 Mbps, compared with 14 Mbps for 1080p60. At 60 fps, flame movement may look smoother, but the higher bitrate needs more sustained upload capacity. Choose 60 fps if the source visibly benefits from it and your connection can support the added load reliably.
Those bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations for H.264 at the stated resolutions and frame rates; they are not measured minimums or a promise that a connection will remain stable.

Set upload capacity before you go live
Plan around total streaming bitrate, not just the video figure: audio and any other simultaneous streams also use upload capacity. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom beyond the total bitrate. For a single stream configured at 5 Mbps video, that means planning for more than 6 Mbps of available upload capacity after accounting for audio and other upload activity. Measure upload speed rather than using download speed as a proxy, and avoid saturating the connection with other transfers. See YouTube’s streaming tips for its bandwidth and reliability guidance.
A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful optional setup choice when Wi-Fi is inconsistent, but a cable cannot fix an unstable internet service. Whichever connection you use, judge it by sustained upload stability, not a brief speed-test peak.

Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before the planned broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and select its visibility: public, private or unlisted. Follow the encoder workflow in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS for general streaming. The stream key is sensitive: treat it like a password and do not show or share it.
- Apply the output settings. Select H.264, CBR, 1080p30, 5 Mbps video and a 2-second keyframe interval. Set audio to AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz stereo where those controls are available.
- Start a test and inspect stream health. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the encoder remains connected before relying on the stream for a long broadcast.
YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and up to 60 fps. If your encoder offers alternatives, choose according to its compatibility and YouTube’s current settings guidance rather than assuming that the H.264 bitrate numbers apply to another codec.
Test the loop, audio and stream health
Test with audio and picture movement similar to the actual broadcast. For a fireplace loop, watch the join between the final frame and the beginning: a visible flash, abrupt brightness change or pause can make an otherwise calm video distracting. Listen across the same transition for a click, silence or sudden change in ambience level.

- Check that the source file plays through and returns to its beginning without an unintended gap.
- Listen for abrupt audio edits, silence, clipping or a noticeable change in loudness at the loop point.
- Verify the encoder stays connected and that YouTube’s stream-health messages do not show a problem.
- Keep the encoder and connection running during the test long enough to catch interruptions that a quick preview would miss.
YouTube advises testing before starting and monitoring stream health and messages. Its test guidance specifically calls for audio and movement similar to what the stream will contain; the loop-point checks above apply that general advice to fireplace footage. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips.
Choose latency and DVR for an ambience audience
A fireplace stream generally does not need rapid two-way interaction, so stability is usually more useful than the lowest possible latency. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more buffering and matters less when you are not interacting with viewers. For a simple loop, use the latency option that gives you a stable stream rather than lowering it without a specific need.

DVR is optional. When enabled, it lets viewers pause, rewind and resume the live stream. Decide whether that viewing behavior suits the ambience stream, then set the option in the stream controls. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers latency, DVR, privacy and key controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.RTMPS or HLS?
Use the protocol your encoder supports and your production requires. YouTube recommends RTMPS for general streaming. Its HLS guidance describes higher latency because HLS sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream; that is unlikely to benefit a straightforward, non-interactive fireplace loop. If a production requirement calls for HLS, check your encoder and YouTube’s protocol guidance before switching.

Copyright and the right to stream the video
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights to the fireplace footage, music and any other included material. A video being relaxing, looped or available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s live-streaming workflow and settings do not replace checking the rights that apply to your content.
Troubleshoot common fireplace-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream disconnects or becomes unstable | Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity, or competing uploads | Measure upload speed, compare it with the total stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce competing network activity. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, try Ethernet as a connection option. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health | Encoder output or connection stability | Check the encoder’s output settings against YouTube’s codec, bitrate and keyframe guidance; inspect the stream-health messages and test again before the planned broadcast. |
| Playback looks less smooth than expected | Frame-rate choice or a source that benefits from higher frame rate | Try 1080p60 only if the source’s flame motion benefits and upload capacity can sustain YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps H.264 video bitrate at that setting. |
| A flash, pause or audio break occurs at the loop point | The source edit or loop behavior | Review the end-to-start transition in both picture and sound, then correct the source or loop setup and test again. |
| The encoder cannot connect on the planned day | Live streaming has not yet been enabled, or stream details were entered incorrectly | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement; then verify the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio and the encoder. Replace an exposed key rather than continuing to use one that may have been shared. |
Or let it run in the cloud
