To show a countdown and the current video title on a 24/7 YouTube stream, add them as visual overlays in the software that composes your stream—such as OBS—before its output reaches YouTube. A playlist alone does not make YouTube display the current filename. In OBS, you can loop one file with a Media Source or build a playlist with a VLC Video source; automatic title updates require a playlist tool that supplies the current item.
Choose where the overlays will be created
YouTube receives the finished video from your encoder. It does not automatically read a playlist and place its current filename over the picture. With a local OBS setup, add the video, countdown, and text to an OBS scene; OBS combines them into one output for YouTube Live. A hosted playout service is another option, but check whether its current features support the exact overlays you want.
Set up video playback in OBS
Loop one video
For a single clip, add an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop property. This is the simplest setup, but it does not create a multi-video playlist.
Build a local playlist
- Install VLC in a version and architecture compatible with your OBS installation.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the media files you want to play.
- Configure the source to loop. Choose ordered playback or shuffle according to your rundown.
- Put the VLC Video source in the scene, then place overlay sources above it in the Sources list so they appear over the video.
OBS documents playlist, loop, and shuffle controls for VLC Video sources; the source depends on a compatible VLC installation. See OBS Media Sources documentation for current details.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add the now-playing label
Static text
For text that does not change, add an OBS text source and enter the label you want shown. This is suitable for persistent information such as a channel name, but it will not update itself as the playlist advances.
Automatically updated titles
For a changing title, use a playlist system that exposes the current item to an overlay. Two third-party OBS projects describe this kind of functionality:
- 24/7 Playout describes a Now/Next display with progress and remaining time. Its project page specifies a Windows x64 release and recommends OBS 32.x or a compatible version. Check the current release and compatibility for your system before installing.
- OBS Playlist Deck describes a dock that can show the current and next items and operate supported media sources. Its project page warns that its builds are unsigned.
These are independent projects, not built-in OBS features. Review the project’s installation instructions, release status, supported media sources, and security implications before installing; the exact feature set and compatibility can change.

Add the countdown you actually need
First decide what the countdown means. A countdown to a scheduled broadcast start is different from a countdown between playlist videos. The reviewed OBS and YouTube documentation does not establish a native countdown widget with exact setup steps, so choose a specific widget or script and follow its current instructions rather than assuming all countdowns reset or run continuously in the same way.
- For a scheduled-start countdown, verify the tool can target the intended start time and time zone, and what happens if the broadcast starts late.
- For an between-video countdown, verify that the tool can detect the end of one item and reset for the next. Do not assume a static text source can do this.
- Preview the scene through a full playback transition before relying on it in a continuous stream.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a broadcast in Live Control Room and open its stream settings.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube. If you use a custom ingest configuration, use the values supplied in Live Control Room.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your broadcast.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, follow the go-live flow in YouTube Live Control Room; starting the encoder and making the scheduled broadcast public are distinct steps.
YouTube’s encoder streaming help explains the stream URL/key workflow and says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule is not a guarantee that an uninterrupted 24/7 stream will be archived as one video.
Keep a 24/7 local stream running
A local OBS stream depends on the playback computer, its power, OBS, the network connection, and YouTube ingest remaining usable. Plan how you will notice a stopped broadcast and restart it; the reviewed documentation does not establish guaranteed continuous availability for a local setup.

If OBS reports dropped frames, the OBS Help Portal says it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing; it attributes the issue to a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Check the configured bitrate against the connection’s sustained upload capacity and investigate network stability. See OBS guidance on dropped frames and connection issues.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the playlist and overlays handled without keeping a home computer encoding continuously, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Check copyright and reused-content issues
A looping stream still needs rights to the video and audio being broadcast. Confirm that you have permission to use every playlist item, including music, game footage, and any third-party assets; a stream key or playlist tool does not grant those rights. YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies are separate considerations, so review the relevant rules for your channel and content before scheduling a continuous broadcast. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist.
Troubleshooting
The current title never changes
A standard OBS text source is static. Use a playlist integration that supplies the current item, and confirm that the selected tool supports your media source and OBS version.
The VLC playlist does not appear or play
Check that VLC is installed and compatible with OBS’s architecture, then confirm the media files are accessible and correctly added to the VLC Video source.

The countdown shows the wrong time or does not reset
Check whether it is configured for a fixed scheduled start or a per-item transition. Verify its time zone, trigger behavior, and reset rules in that particular widget’s current documentation.
The broadcast starts in OBS but not on the scheduled YouTube page
Confirm the OBS stream URL and key match the intended broadcast, then complete the scheduled go-live flow in Live Control Room.
OBS shows dropped frames
Investigate an unstable connection or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS guidance explains that it drops frames rather than buffer the stream; reducing the bitrate or improving the connection may address the cause.
A third-party plugin will not install or is blocked
Check the project’s supported operating systems, OBS versions, release status, and signing warning. Do not install a build unless you trust its source and understand the security implications.
