What Is Cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube Stream: a Dedicated Server or a Virtual Server?

A VPS is likely cheaper for one continuous YouTube stream in these examples, but transfer allowance and encoding workload can change the total. See the 30-day data estimates and compare the full hosting quote.

For one 24/7 YouTube stream, a virtual private server (VPS) is likely cheaper in the published examples here—provided its included outbound data and CPU capacity fit your stream. At the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p60, a continuous feed uses about 3,619 GiB in an illustrative 30-day month before network overhead. That exceeds DigitalOcean’s 2,000 GiB plan allowance but fits within its 4,000 GiB plan; the cited Hetzner dedicated-server example costs substantially more. These are provider-specific figures, not a market-wide price survey.

What the published examples cost

The comparison below uses published prices retrieved in 2026. DigitalOcean calls its virtual machines Droplets; Hetzner’s figure applies to a specific dedicated server and two locations. Currency, tax, transfer, and setup terms differ, so the monthly rental alone is not a complete comparison.

Provider and option Published price Included outbound transfer Important qualification
DigitalOcean entry Droplet $4/month 500 GiB 512 MiB RAM and 1 vCPU; likely unsuitable for the cited continuous bitrate on transfer allowance alone.
DigitalOcean Droplet $12/month 2,000 GiB Does not cover the estimated 30-day transfer for a steady 1080p30 or 1080p60 feed.
DigitalOcean Droplet $24/month 4,000 GiB Covers the arithmetic estimate for a steady 1080p60 feed on transfer alone; CPU suitability depends on workload.
Hetzner AX42-1 dedicated server $117.10/month plus $59 setup Not stated in the cited price notice Listed for Falkenstein and Helsinki; prices exclude VAT under an adjustment effective 15 June 2026.

DigitalOcean says a Droplet is its brand name for a VPS. Its additional outbound Droplet transfer is $0.01/GiB, inbound transfer is free, and transfer allowances are pooled at team level. That pooling matters if other Droplets on the same team also consume outbound data. The cited Hetzner price is one dedicated-server example, not a typical or universal dedicated-hosting rate. Estimate the stream’s monthly transfer first

For a constant video bitrate, estimate data as bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8. The following examples use a 30-day month (2,592,000 seconds), decimal GB, then approximate binary GiB. They are arithmetic estimates, not provider measurements, and exclude protocol overhead and bitrate variation.

YouTube H.264 recommendation Approximate data in 30 days
1080p at 30 fps: 10 Mbps 3,240 GB decimal, about 3,017 GiB
1080p at 60 fps: 12 Mbps 3,888 GB decimal, about 3,619 GiB

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends these H.264 bitrates, along with constant bitrate (CBR). Actual usage can be higher due to network overhead or a stream that runs above its target bitrate. Check the encoder’s configured bitrate and the host’s accounting units: DigitalOcean lists transfer in GiB. YouTube separately transcodes incoming live streams for viewers, so viewer playback does not multiply the encoder’s outbound hosting transfer. YouTube Live encoder settings

Which is cheaper for your workload?

Choose a VPS when transfer and compute both fit

For a single stream, the cited $24/month DigitalOcean plan is a plausible lower-cost option by transfer arithmetic: its 4,000 GiB allowance is above the estimated 3,619 GiB for a constant 12 Mbps feed over 30 days. That is not a guarantee of sufficient capacity. Leave room for overhead, usage variation, and any other Droplets drawing on the team pool. The $12/month allowance of 2,000 GiB is below either 1080p example, so additional outbound data could change its total cost.

Consider a dedicated server when the compute case justifies it

A dedicated server may make sense when the workload needs more predictable or greater CPU resources, or when a specific provider’s bandwidth terms make the total cost favorable. The cited AX42-1 price is considerably higher than the example VPS rentals before its setup fee and VAT. It does not establish that every dedicated server is more expensive, nor does the cited notice state its transfer allowance. Compare an actual quote and plan rather than generalizing from this one model.

Compute and bandwidth are separate constraints. DigitalOcean distinguishes shared-CPU and dedicated-CPU plans; a low-cost VM should not be assumed to encode or transcode a particular source reliably. If the server only relays an already-encoded feed, its CPU demands may differ from a workflow that transcodes. No performance benchmark for either server type is established here, so test the actual workflow or size against the provider’s specifications before committing.

A practical total-cost checklist

  1. Set the actual output bitrate. Use your intended resolution and frame rate, then check the encoder’s CBR setting and YouTube’s current guidance.
  2. Calculate a full-month data estimate. Multiply Mbps by 2,592,000 seconds for a 30-day month and divide by 8; convert to the provider’s GB or GiB convention. Allow for overhead and variation.
  3. Check bundled egress and overage. Confirm the included allowance, whether it is pooled with other workloads, and the charge for excess outbound traffic. Do not count inbound transfer as the stream’s main cost.
  4. Match CPU to the job. Establish whether the host relays an encoded source or must encode/transcode it; compare CPU allocation and test where the workload is uncertain.
  5. Compare the complete quote. Include monthly rental, one-time setup, tax, currency, location, billing terms, and any transfer overage.
