To find out whether a cloud YouTube streaming service costs less than leaving a PC running, compare the cloud service’s actual billed cost in rupees with the PC’s measured electricity use at your household’s applicable marginal tariff. Match the same workload and runtime: looping uploaded videos is not the same job as encoding live gameplay or a camera feed.
There is no single answer for every Indian household. The result depends on the PC’s real wall draw, hours streamed, electricity rate, cloud plan and payment fees. A power supply’s rated wattage is not a measurement of what the whole PC uses while streaming.
Calculate the PC’s streaming electricity cost
Measure the computer’s average draw at the wall while it performs the streaming task you want to compare. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure the PC and any equipment included in the comparison. Do not use the power supply’s maximum or rated wattage as if it were the computer’s actual consumption.
- Measure average wall draw. Run the PC with the intended streaming workload and measure its average draw in watts. If the PC would already be on for other reasons, measure or estimate the additional draw caused by streaming rather than assigning all of the computer’s electricity to the stream.
- Use the real monthly runtime. Count the hours the stream is expected to run during the month. For a continuous 24/7 stream, use the actual number of hours in that billing month, not an assumed 30-day month if precision matters.
- Convert watts and hours into kilowatt-hours. Monthly energy (kWh) = average wall draw (W) ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours.
- Apply the relevant electricity rate. Monthly electricity estimate (₹) = monthly energy (kWh) × the applicable marginal tariff (₹/kWh). Use the rate that applies to the next units on your bill, including the relevant tariff slab and any applicable charges that vary with consumption.
For example, a hypothetical PC drawing 150 W at the wall for 120 hours in a month uses 18 kWh: 150 ÷ 1,000 × 120. At an assumed marginal tariff of ₹8/kWh, that energy would cost ₹144. These are illustrative assumptions, not a measured PC result or a recommended or typical Indian tariff. Substitute your own meter reading, runtime and bill rate.

Convert the cloud price into a comparable rupee cost
Start with the current price for the service and plan that actually fits the task. Convert the quoted USD subscription price using the exchange rate applied by your payment provider, then account for applicable taxes and foreign-currency or payment fees. A generic exchange-rate quote may not match the final card charge; use the actual billed amount when you have it.
Compare that billed cloud cost with the PC estimate for the same period and runtime. Check what the plan includes—such as stream or slot limits, storage, hours, overages and recovery behavior—and confirm that the service is available where you are. Upload or transfer costs can also matter. Do not compare a bare dollar sticker price with a rupee electricity estimate and call the result a total-cost comparison.

Make sure both options do the same job
“Cloud streaming” can describe different services. Match the service to the work before comparing prices:

YouTube Help describes the encoder’s role this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” That distinction matters: a fee for hosting and looping uploaded clips is not directly comparable with electricity for a live gaming PC unless both options perform the same task.

Include the costs and practical limits that change the result
- Quality and production needs: Match resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, number of channels, overlays and whether transcoding or capture hardware is required.
- Runtime and plan limits: Compare the actual monthly hours and check stream limits, storage, restarts, downtime behavior and overage charges.
- Local operating conditions: Consider household power and internet reliability, upload bandwidth, monitoring and the time needed to recover a failed stream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and leaving upload headroom.
- PC ownership: If the computer is already owned and the question is recurring electricity versus subscription, do not charge its full purchase price to the comparison. Include hardware purchase or depreciation only when comparing broader ownership choices.
- Household tariff: India has no single household electricity rate that can answer this for everyone. Use the applicable utility tariff and the rate for the next units consumed.

What the numbers can—and cannot—tell you
The arithmetic can estimate recurring energy cost, but it does not establish a universal winner. Your wall measurement and marginal tariff determine the local electricity figure; the cloud provider’s current terms and your actual payment determine its billed cost. Reliability and the time spent monitoring or recovering a stream may affect the practical choice even when the direct monthly costs are close.
