There is no universal cost winner: compare your PC’s measured wall power while it is actually streaming with the full VPS bill, including enough outbound data and compute to run the same stream. An idle-power figure is only a baseline; encoding and sending video can draw a different amount.
What to compare
For a fair monthly comparison, hold the stream target and time period constant. The home figure should reflect the whole setup you plan to leave running. The VPS figure should include everything needed to encode and send the stream, not just the advertised compute price.
- Home: average wall draw during the actual stream workload, hours powered, and the marginal electricity rate on your bill.
- VPS: recurring plan price, sufficient CPU/GPU or encoder capacity, included outbound transfer, transfer overages, storage, and any operational services you need.
- Both: the same resolution, frame rate, codec, and continuity expectations.
A PSU’s rated capacity or a GPU specification is not a measurement of what the running setup draws from the wall. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure the whole setup. Keep the display and peripherals either included in both measurements or excluded from both.
Calculate your PC’s monthly electricity cost
Measure the stream workload
- Plug the computer and any equipment that will remain on into a suitable wall-power monitor.
- Run the intended encoder and stream settings long enough to record a representative average wattage. Measure the display and peripherals if they will also stay on.
- If you want an idle comparison, record it separately. Do not use idle watts as the stream figure.
The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2020 report shows why a single assumed wattage is misleading: its modeled average gaming computer plus display profile totals 1,394 kWh per year across a mixed-use day that includes gaming, browsing, video streaming, idle, sleep, and off time. It is not a 24/7 encoder test or a universal idle figure. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory researchers reported measurements from 26 gaming systems in 2019 and found energy use varied with both hardware and workload. Neither result gives a reliable fixed wattage for your particular stream setup.

Use your marginal electricity rate
Calculate variable energy cost as:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours powered × marginal electricity price per kWh
For a 30-day month, use 720 hours. For an average 365-day year, use 8,760 hours. Use the rate that applies to the extra electricity on your own bill, in your currency; fixed utility charges generally are not avoided by turning off one computer. Electricity tariffs vary by location and date. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly is an official U.S. statistics source, not a substitute for your own tariff.

Worked calculation
If your measured setup averages 150 watts and your marginal rate is $0.20 per kWh, a 30-day month uses 150 ÷ 1,000 × 720 = 108 kWh. The variable energy cost is 108 × $0.20 = $21.60. This example is arithmetic only; use your measured watts and local rate rather than treating it as a typical gaming-PC cost.
Estimate the VPS stream’s outbound data
A VPS must send a continuous stream, so monthly egress can outweigh a low compute price. Estimate decimal gigabytes before protocol overhead with:

Mbps × 1,000,000 ÷ 8 × seconds ÷ 1,000,000,000
At 5 Mbps for 30 days, that works out to about 1,620 GB (1.62 TB); at 10 Mbps, about 3,240 GB (3.24 TB). These are calculations from bitrate and time, not measured traffic figures. Compare them with the provider’s current included transfer, its definition of egress, how it counts overhead, and any overage charges.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps H.264 for 1080p30, 17 Mbps H.264 for 1080p60, and 50 Mbps for 4K60 H.264; recommendations vary by codec and output settings. Use the bitrate for your actual target rather than a generic stream rate. YouTube also says to test the stream and recommends a speed test for upload bitrate. Its transcoding creates viewer formats from the incoming stream; it does not remove the need for your PC or VPS to deliver that incoming feed reliably. For scale, a 5 Mbps stream already exceeds 1 TB in a 30-day month before overhead. Do not assume a VPS bundle covers it: check the provider’s current official plan terms and overage pricing.

There is no supported blanket claim that a VPS is cheaper, more reliable, greener, or higher quality. Calculate both totals with your own inputs. The VPS can look inexpensive if you compare only its compute line item, but the result changes when required encoding capacity and continuous egress are included.

Common comparison mistakes
- Using idle watts as the stream draw: measure the PC under the actual encoding workload; retain idle only as a separate baseline.
- Using national averages as your bill rate: use your marginal tariff and state its geography and date if you cite an average.
- Comparing electricity with VPS compute alone: add the egress required by your bitrate, plus compute upgrades, storage, and overages.
- Assuming a VPS can encode because it can send bytes: confirm the plan’s CPU/GPU capacity supports the chosen codec and output continuously.
- Assuming YouTube transcoding fixes a weak source connection: YouTube creates viewer formats after receiving the stream; the source still needs a stable upload path.
