Check the selected event’s preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm OBS has the matching server URL and stream key, then click Go live in YouTube after the preview appears.
Find which stage is failing
A YouTube encoder stream has three distinct stages: OBS produces and sends audio/video, YouTube receives the feed and displays it in the Live Control Room preview, and you start the broadcast using Go live. An offline status can mean a problem at any of those stages. Check the selected event’s preview and stream health rather than relying on OBS’s local status alone.
Troubleshoot the stream in order

Open the correct YouTube event
In YouTube Studio, open the intended scheduled or current stream in Live Control Room. Confirm it is the event you configured in OBS. Look for the incoming preview, the stream health status, and any timestamped error messages. YouTube’s health messages can narrow the cause; there is no universal delay after which a missing preview proves one particular fault.

Match OBS’s server URL and stream key
Compare the server URL and stream key configured in OBS with the connection details for that event in Live Control Room. The stream key identifies the feed YouTube should accept. If it may be stale or incorrect, copy the current key—or reset it in Live Control Room—and update OBS to use the replacement. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.

Check OBS’s actual output
Confirm OBS is outputting the expected audio and video and that it is not reporting an encoder error. Review OBS’s output and logs, YouTube’s dashboard messages, and the computer’s CPU load. Updating encoder software can also address encoder-side issues. A local “Streaming” label alone does not confirm that a valid feed reached YouTube.

Apply format guidance only when it matches the error
If YouTube reports an “incorrect stream format” error, its guidance identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as the expected formats for that case. Check OBS’s output settings against that message. Do not assume a format mismatch explains every offline state when YouTube has not reported it.

Test outbound upload if OBS looks healthy
A healthy-looking encoder with a missing or problematic received feed can point to the connection from your computer to YouTube. Test upload capacity—not just download speed—and compare it with OBS’s streaming bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% spare bandwidth beyond the stream’s needs. A connection that cannot sustain the outbound feed may interrupt delivery even when OBS appears to be running.

Start the broadcast after the preview appears
Once Live Control Room shows the incoming preview, select Go live to start the broadcast. Sending a feed from OBS and starting the YouTube broadcast are separate actions; if you have not selected Go live, OBS can be streaming while the broadcast remains offline.

Use the error and symptoms to narrow the cause
- No preview: First verify the selected event, then the server URL and stream key in OBS. If those match and OBS reports no output error, check outbound upload reliability and available headroom.
- A preview appears, but the channel still shows offline: Check whether you have selected Go live in Live Control Room. Receiving a feed does not itself start the broadcast.
- YouTube shows a specific health error: Follow that message rather than guessing. For an “incorrect stream format” error, check for H.264 video and AAC audio.
- The stream stopped after changing keys: Update OBS with the current key in Live Control Room. A reset key will not work in OBS until the encoder uses the replacement.
