If a 4K video is black in an OBS YouTube Live loop, first find out where it turns black: in the OBS preview, in a local recording, or only on YouTube. Check the source type and visibility, test the file in a simple scene, and compare it with a smaller video. These checks help separate local playback or rendering trouble from an outgoing-stream problem; without details such as your operating system, OBS version, codec, GPU, and log, there is no single guaranteed fix.
Find out which part of the loop is black
Compare the OBS preview, a local recording, and the YouTube player. Also note whether audio continues. This separates two troubleshooting paths: a local source or rendering problem inside OBS, and an outgoing stream or YouTube ingest problem.
- OBS preview and recording are black: start with the source, file, scene visibility, and local rendering.
- OBS preview looks right but the YouTube player is black: investigate output and stream health rather than treating it as a Media Source playback failure.
- Only the preview is black: make a short local recording and check it before changing encoder settings.
- Audio plays but video does not: record that detail; it helps distinguish video playback or rendering from a complete source failure.
These comparisons do not identify a cause on their own, but they tell you which settings are relevant to test next.
Check the video source and scene
Use a source suited to a local video file
For a local video or audio file, OBS documents Media Source and VLC Source as appropriate source types. Confirm that the intended file is selected, the source is present in the active scene, and it is visible rather than hidden behind another source. If the video is coming from a browser or desktop capture instead, diagnose that capture source separately; it is not the same path as loading a local file. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting

Reduce the scene to a controlled test
- Make a simple scene containing the video source.
- Temporarily remove or disable demanding sources, filters, and animated overlays.
- Test the same video and check both the preview and a local recording.
OBS notes that sources, filters, and complex scenes use system resources. If the video appears in this simpler scene, add the removed elements back one at a time to identify whether a particular source or effect changes the result. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
Compare with a smaller file
If your outgoing stream is below 4K or OBS is scaling the source down, test a lower-resolution copy of the video. OBS specifically recommends lower-resolution media as a way to reduce workload when displaying 4K is unnecessary. Treat this as a comparison, not proof that resolution caused the black screen. Check rendering load before changing the encoder
If OBS is lagging or reports rendering or encoding overload, check for other GPU-intensive applications and simplify the scene. On Windows, OBS’s quick step is to close OBS and reopen it using Run as administrator. If symptoms persist, test a lower output resolution or frame rate, or disable costly filters and compare results. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what affected the symptom. Encoding and media playback are related to overall performance but are not interchangeable diagnoses. OBS generally recommends using a supported hardware encoder to move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. Check YouTube settings only when the outgoing stream is the problem
If OBS preview and local recording show the video but the YouTube stream does not, check the output resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, available upload bandwidth, and YouTube stream-health status. YouTube’s live encoder guidance accessed in 2026 recommends H.264 at 42 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 30 fps and 50 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. Select the recommendation matching your actual output; these are YouTube ingest recommendations, not local-playback requirements or guaranteed fixes for a black OBS preview. Match the bitrate to your available upload bandwidth, and test in advance with representative audio and motion. Monitor stream health during the event. YouTube also states: “For 4K / 2160, the option to improve for low latency is not available.” YouTube live encoder settings

Collect details if the black screen remains
Before making more changes, note the evidence that can narrow down a system-specific cause:
- Operating system and version, OBS version, GPU model, and graphics driver.
- Whether the source is Media Source, VLC Source, browser capture, or desktop capture.
- Video container and codec, and whether audio plays.
- Whether the preview, local recording, YouTube player, or all three are black.
- Whether a simple scene or smaller test file changes the result.
- An OBS log from the affected session.
OBS’s help portal links to support material and forums. Include the details above when asking for help; a black-screen report without the source type or log cannot establish a universal cause.
