Short answer: You can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live by loading it in an encoder, then entering the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. But YouTube’s documented “Backup server URL” instructions are for HLS, not RTMP. Its help pages do not establish a universal way to send one prerecorded source to both primary and backup RTMP ingest URLs. Confirm that your encoder and current Live Control Room support the exact dual-RTMP setup you intend to use, then test that playback actually rolls over before relying on it.
What YouTube documents—and what it does not
YouTube’s standard encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Enter both in an encoder that can play a media file, check the preview, and start the event from YouTube when ready. This explains how to send a prerecorded source to a YouTube Live event; it does not, by itself, configure dual-URL RTMP failover.
YouTube’s help page that explicitly instructs creators to copy a “Backup server URL” describes HLS ingestion. Do not paste that HLS backup URL into an RTMP setup or treat HLS-specific requirements as RTMP settings. YouTube describes RTMPS separately as RTMP over TLS/SSL; revealing and copying the RTMPS URL establishes a secure ingest endpoint, not a separate failover procedure.
The current YouTube help guidance covered here does not settle how to configure one prerecorded source to transmit simultaneously to primary and backup RTMP ingest endpoints, or which encoder supports that arrangement. Check the current Live Control Room and the documentation for your specific encoder before configuring it. Interface labels and ingest behavior can change.

Prepare the YouTube Live event and prerecorded source
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live, then open Live Control Room. Create or select the stream using the Stream tab.
- Copy the current stream URL and key. The stream URL identifies the ingest destination; the stream key is the credential the encoder uses to send the feed. Use the value currently shown in your account and keep the key private.
- Check your encoder’s capabilities. It must be able to play the prerecorded file and send to the destination or destinations your failover design requires. If you plan to use two encoder instances or a multiple-destination feature, verify that the software supports the intended primary-and-backup RTMP arrangement. The YouTube encoder guide does not document every third-party product’s controls.
- Configure the ordinary YouTube connection. If the encoder has a YouTube option, follow its instructions. Otherwise put the YouTube stream URL in its server or RTMP server field and the stream key in its stream key field. Select the prerecorded video as the media source using that encoder’s file-playback controls.
- Confirm the protocol. For RTMP, use the RTMP endpoint and the encoder’s documented RTMP workflow. For RTMPS, YouTube says to reveal the secure URL with the lock control in Live Control Room and copy it to the encoder, with the stream key entered separately. That is secure endpoint setup, not a dual-ingest recipe.
Preview first, then take the scheduled stream live
- Start the encoder and wait for the feed preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check that the video and audio are present and behaving as expected before going live.
- For a scheduled encoder stream, click Go live in Live Control Room only after the preview is present. Keep an eye on stream health and the playback throughout the event.
- When finished, stop the event using the applicable Live Control Room and encoder sequence. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Configure and prove failover before the broadcast
A backup process running is not proof that viewers can use it. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend stopping the primary encoder (or disconnecting its Ethernet) and checking that the player rolls over to the backup. Perform this test before the event, using the same protocol and configuration you intend to rely on.
- Confirm that both the primary and backup paths are configured as required by your encoder and YouTube’s current ingest controls.
- Start the primary and backup arrangement and confirm the expected preview or player behavior.
- Simulate primary failure by stopping the primary encoder, or disconnecting its Ethernet connection.
- Watch the player and verify that it rolls over to the backup. If it does not, do not assume failover will work during the actual event; review the encoder’s configuration and its current documentation.
- Restore the primary path and confirm the behavior you expect when it returns.
YouTube recommends planning outbound capacity for primary plus backup plus 20% headroom. This is a capacity recommendation, not a universal bitrate: the required upload depends on the configured feeds. Allow for both outbound feeds at their configured bitrates, plus the recommended headroom.

RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS are not interchangeable instructions
| Protocol | What the YouTube guidance establishes | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | The general encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. | It does not establish a universal primary-plus-backup RTMP configuration for one prerecorded source. |
| RTMPS | YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Live Control Room can reveal an RTMPS URL using the lock control; enter the stream key separately. | A secure endpoint is not, by itself, a separate failover method. |
| HLS | YouTube’s HLS setup says to select HLS as the protocol and copy the resulting stream URL. If backup ingestion is needed, it identifies a “Backup server URL.” | Do not apply HLS’s backup URL or HLS-only transport requirements as though they were RTMP settings. HLS uses video segments and has higher latency than a continuous RTMP stream. |
Choose an encoder or failover design by checking five things
- File playback: Can it play your prerecorded video as the source for a live feed?
- Backup capability: Can it send to multiple destinations or run a separately configured backup encoder in the way your design requires?
- Protocol: Is the YouTube ingest path RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS? Use instructions for that protocol only.
- Upload capacity: Can your connection sustain primary and backup outbound feeds plus YouTube’s recommended headroom?
- Verified rollover: Does a test show that the player switches to the backup when the primary is stopped?
YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but no particular model is established here as a solution for simultaneous prerecorded primary-and-backup RTMP transmission. Hardware is optional; verify compatibility before buying equipment for this specific use.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
No preview appears in Live Control Room
- Confirm the encoder is running and is sending to the stream URL currently shown for the selected YouTube stream.
- Check that the stream key is current and entered in the correct field. Treat it as a credential; do not substitute a URL for the key or vice versa.
- Verify the encoder is actually playing the intended file and that its connection uses the selected ingest protocol.
The scheduled event is not live to viewers
For a scheduled encoder stream, the preview must appear before you click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder alone is not the same as using that control to take the scheduled event live.

The backup does not take over
- Repeat the controlled test by stopping the primary encoder and watching the player, rather than judging from encoder status alone.
- Check that the backup configuration matches the chosen protocol and the current YouTube and encoder instructions. Do not use an HLS backup URL in an RTMP configuration.
- Check that available outbound bandwidth can carry both feeds plus the recommended headroom.
The stream is unstable under failover load
Recalculate outbound capacity using the actual primary and backup feed bitrates, then add 20% headroom as YouTube recommends. A connection that handles the primary alone may not have enough capacity for both feeds.
