How to Diagnose Dropped Frames in an OBS YouTube Loop Stream

Diagnose YouTube warnings and OBS dropped frames on a loop stream by identifying the right counter, checking bitrate, and testing one network change at a time.

First identify which indicator is reporting the problem. If OBS’s Dropped Frames (Network) counter is rising, OBS is having trouble delivering data to YouTube’s ingest server at the configured bitrate; it is not the same as encoding lag, rendering lag, or viewers buffering. Check that counter alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health, save the OBS log and exact YouTube warning, then change one setting or network condition at a time. A looping video does not, by itself, point to a special cause.

Identify which frames or stream-health indicator is failing

During a controlled test, open OBS’s Stats window and YouTube Live Control Room. Record the exact counter or warning that changes; “dropped frames” is not a diagnosis unless you know which system reported it.

What you see What it indicates What to check next
OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter increases OBS says the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to compensate. Check bitrate, upload stability, connection type, and ingest path.
OBS’s rendering-lag or encoding-lag counter increases This is distinct from network-dropped frames. It concerns the rendering or encoding path, not the network counter described above. Note the exact OBS counter and preserve the log; do not apply a network fix based on this indicator alone.
YouTube Live Control Room reports a stream-health issue YouTube provides its own stream-health status and messages; an unspecified warning is not automatically equivalent to OBS’s network counter. Copy the exact warning and timestamp, then investigate it alongside OBS’s Stats and log.
OBS shows no network drops, but viewers report buffering Viewer playback can be affected by a viewer’s location, device, or internet connection even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames. Use OBS’s separate viewer-buffering guidance rather than assuming the broadcaster’s ingest connection is at fault.

Before changing anything, note when the issue starts, output resolution and frame rate, codec, bitrate, whether OBS is connected by Ethernet or Wi-Fi, the OBS log for the session, and YouTube’s exact status text. YouTube describes the Live Control Room’s live metrics and status messages at See your live stream’s metrics. OBS distinguishes connection drops from playback buffering in its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.

Check whether the bitrate fits the connection and YouTube settings

A speed-test result is useful evidence, but one result does not prove sustained capacity on the route from your setup to YouTube. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate, not a guarantee. If the configured bitrate is above what your connection can sustain reliably, lower it and repeat the same test.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Then compare your settings with YouTube’s table for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate you use. For example, YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026, lists H.264 at 1080p60: 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. That is one row in a codec- and video-mode-specific table, not a universal bitrate for every stream. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no greater than four seconds. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Test with movement and content like the intended broadcast. For a loop, use the actual OBS scene and loop source; a brief static desktop test may not exercise the same setup. YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health during it.

Run network tests one at a time

Keep the content and OBS settings constant while testing a single network change. Record whether the OBS network counter or YouTube warning changes after each test.

  1. Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. Connect the streaming computer directly by wired Ethernet where possible, then repeat the same test. OBS recommends a wired connection when Wi-Fi instability is suspected.
  2. Reduce bitrate if capacity is marginal. Choose a lower video bitrate that fits stable upload capacity and YouTube’s recommendations for your codec and mode. Repeat the test before changing another variable.
  3. Compare the ingest path. Try another available OBS server or ingest option. OBS also suggests testing a different streaming service to help determine whether an issue is service-specific; that comparison is diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix.
  4. Check software that can interfere with network traffic. Temporarily test whether a VPN or security software is involved, then restore protection and configure an exception only if the test confirms interference. Check for bundled network-optimization utilities and network-driver issues.
  5. Review OBS network options on Windows, if available. OBS documents network optimizations and TCP pacing, default Bind to IP, and IPv4-only as options to test. Treat IPv4-only as reversible: return to the IPv4/IPv6 default if it makes no difference. Dynamic bitrate may reduce bitrate during congestion, but it lowers quality and does not fix the underlying cause.
  6. Inspect local hardware, then escalate. Restart the modem or router if appropriate; check suspect cables, network cards, switches, and extenders. If the issue persists after local checks, ask your ISP to investigate possible routing or congestion outside your home network.

These are troubleshooting options, not proof that any one component is faulty. OBS’s official Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide covers wired connections, bitrate, server choice, VPN and security software, network utilities, drivers, and equipment checks.

Check the encoder, protocol, and stream-key path

A stream that cannot start or connect is a different branch from a network-dropped-frames counter that rises after streaming has begun. YouTube’s standard encoder workflow uses the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room in the encoder, then waits for the preview before going live. If YouTube reports an encoder-start error, its troubleshooting instructions say to obtain a new stream key and update the encoder.

For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and the keyframe interval described above, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check that the encoder’s protocol and codec settings agree with the YouTube stream configuration; do not switch protocols or codecs at random. See YouTube’s guides to creating a YouTube live stream with an encoder and troubleshooting a YouTube live stream.

Use the test result to narrow the cause

  • If Ethernet stabilizes the OBS network counter, that supports Wi-Fi instability as a factor in this test.
  • If lowering bitrate stabilizes the counter, that supports a connection-capacity or delivery problem at the previous bitrate.
  • If OBS reports no network drops while viewers buffer, investigate playback conditions separately; viewers’ location, device, or connection can affect playback.
  • If YouTube reports a stream-health problem while OBS’s network counter remains clear, retain the exact YouTube message and investigate that warning on its own terms.

These outcomes help narrow the problem; they do not prove a single root cause. Change one axis at a time—connection type, bitrate, ingest path, or encoder configuration—so the result remains interpretable.

Troubleshoot common cases

OBS reports drops during a loop, but the cause is unclear

A loop is not, by itself, evidence of a loop-specific fault. The available guidance does not establish a special cause for loop streams. Test with the actual scene and loop source, and use the OBS counter, log, YouTube warning, and network measurements to identify what changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The counter falls to zero or fluctuates

Preserve the session log and note the timestamp rather than relying on a short speed test alone. Repeat with Ethernet and, separately, a lower bitrate. If the issue remains, check local network software and hardware before asking the ISP to investigate the route or congestion.

YouTube warns about stream health, but OBS shows no network drops

Copy the exact warning and timestamp from Live Control Room. YouTube’s health messages are separate evidence from OBS’s network counter; do not assume the warning means the same thing as OBS-reported dropped frames.

The stream fails to start or connect

Check the YouTube stream URL, stream key, and encoder configuration. If YouTube identifies a stream-key or encoder-start problem, follow its key-reset instructions and update the encoder. This differs from a stream that starts successfully and later accumulates network drops.

Viewers say the stream buffers, but OBS is clean

Separate viewer playback complaints from the broadcaster’s connection status. OBS notes that viewer location, device, and internet connection can affect playback even if OBS reports no dropped frames.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a loop video itself cause OBS dropped frames?

A loop alone does not establish a special cause. Diagnose the exact OBS counter, log, YouTube warning, and network conditions.

Should I buy a new router to fix dropped frames?

Not without evidence the router or modem is the failing component. First test Ethernet, bitrate, software, cables, and the connection path.
