To inspect an RTMP stream before sending it to YouTube, publish it from your encoder to a local RTMP server, then open that server’s stream URL in a separate player. This lets you check the picture, movement and audio without using YouTube as the first test destination. It does not test your internet upload or YouTube’s ingest, so you should also test the actual destination before an event.
What a local RTMP test checks
A local server sits between your encoder and a playback client. Your encoder publishes a stream to the server; a separate client reads it. MediaMTX documents this workflow for OBS, FFmpeg, VLC, GStreamer and other clients. MediaMTX documentation
A local test can reveal whether the encoder is producing the expected audio and video, whether the stream path works, and whether playback looks and sounds right on your local network. It cannot show whether your internet connection can sustain the stream or whether YouTube will accept it.
Choose a test method
| Method | What it checks | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Publish from OBS to MediaMTX | Exercises your actual OBS output settings and local publish path. | Use this when you want to check the encoder configuration you plan to send to YouTube. |
| Publish a file with FFmpeg | Checks that the local server and reader work, using a known-good media file. | Use this to set up or troubleshoot the local server before involving OBS. It does not test OBS settings. |
These methods cover different parts of the chain; the documentation does not establish a measured diagnostic-accuracy advantage for either one.

Set up a local RTMP server
-
Download and start MediaMTX for your operating system. MediaMTX supports Windows, macOS and Linux and is documented as a ready-to-use media server and proxy. The precise installation commands and firewall steps depend on your operating system and software version, so use the current MediaMTX documentation rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all command.
-
Use the server on the same computer as your encoder for the simplest test. If it runs on another computer, make sure that machine is reachable on your local network and that its firewall permits the relevant traffic.
-
Choose a stream path and use the same path for publishing and reading. The MediaMTX examples use
mystream; its RTMP URL isrtmp://localhost/mystreamwhen the server and client are on the same computer. For another machine, use the server’s reachable address in place oflocalhost. See MediaMTX’s introduction for server capabilities and its RTMP client instructions for reading streams.Rank #2

What to inspect
- Confirm that expected video and audio are both present; check that sound is audible and at an appropriate level.
- Look at composition, movement and continuity. Check for unexpected freezes, missing frames, black video or interruptions.
- Listen for clipping, silence, distortion or audio that falls out of sync with the picture.
- Use the actual sort of content you plan to stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned live stream.
Test the local server with a file instead
If you want to verify the server and reader before configuring OBS, FFmpeg can publish a local file as a live RTMP stream. MediaMTX documents this example: ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream. Replace file.mp4 with a suitable local file, and ensure the receiving path matches your MediaMTX configuration. The command loops the input and copies its streams; it does not exercise OBS’s encoder settings. See MediaMTX’s FFmpeg publishing instructions.
Then open the matching local RTMP URL in your reader. If playback works, the file-to-server-to-reader path is functioning; test OBS separately if OBS is your intended encoder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck settings for the YouTube destination
Once the local preview is satisfactory, configure the encoder for YouTube using the current destination URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions and verify the current options in Live Control Room.

Bitrate depends on the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate; do not treat a single figure as universal. The following H.264 recommendations and minimums are from YouTube Help’s current table, accessed in 2026. The page does not state a publication date, and its figures may change.
| H.264 video mode | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for other modes and codec-specific guidance. YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings in the usual Live Control Room workflow.

Keep the local inspection and destination test distinct: the first isolates the local publishing and playback chain; the second checks the route to YouTube. For a YouTube forwarding setup through MediaMTX, recheck the destination URL in Live Control Room rather than assuming an example endpoint remains current. MediaMTX’s forwarding documentation also notes that its described YouTube setup requires both video and audio tracks. MediaMTX forwarding instructions
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The reader cannot connect | MediaMTX is not running, the server address is wrong, the path differs, or a firewall blocks access. | Confirm the server is running; use the same path for publishing and reading; use localhost only when the reader shares the server’s computer; check local network reachability and firewall rules. |
| OBS connects but no preview appears | The reader URL or path is mismatched, or OBS is not sending the expected media. | Check the OBS server field and reader URL against the same path, then confirm OBS is actively streaming and the scene contains the expected sources. |
| Video appears but there is no sound | The scene or encoder output may not include audio, or the reader may not be receiving it. | Check OBS audio meters and output configuration, then test with a source that includes audio. YouTube’s documented MediaMTX forwarding setup requires audio and video tracks. |
| Playback stutters or freezes | The issue may be in the encoder output, local computer or network, or the reader. | Try a representative but simpler scene, check whether the local stream remains continuous, and compare with another compatible reader. A clean local test still does not establish internet or YouTube performance. |
| Local playback works but YouTube does not | The local test does not cover the remote destination, credentials, upload route or ingest. | Use the current RTMPS destination and key from Live Control Room, confirm upload capacity, run a destination test, and inspect YouTube stream health. |
| FFmpeg reports a missing input or failed publish | The input filename or path may be wrong, the file may not be readable, or the destination path may not match the server. | Confirm the file path, test with a suitable local file, check that MediaMTX is running, and make the RTMP path match the configured server path. |
Keep YouTube credentials separate
Do not publish your YouTube stream key in a public post, screenshot or example. The local OBS test uses an empty key because it publishes to your local server. Add the YouTube credentials only in the destination workflow, and use the current endpoint and key provided by Live Control Room. If a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube rather than continuing to use a compromised credential.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video running as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than inspect a one-time encoder output, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
