How to Keep a YouTube Live Stream Active While Replacing Its Playlist

Replace an OBS media playlist during a YouTube Live stream by editing its VLC Video source while keeping the encoder output connected. Check the preview and audio; a seamless transition is not guaranteed.

You can replace the media playlist without ending a YouTube Live stream by keeping OBS’s encoder output connected and changing the playlist in OBS. For a list of multiple files, use an OBS VLC Video source; YouTube’s stream key and server URL handle the live connection, while the source’s playlist is managed separately in OBS. A gap-free picture or audio transition is not guaranteed, so check the output before and after the edit.

What “playlist” means here

This guide is about replacing the list of videos that an encoder plays during a live broadcast—not changing a YouTube channel playlist or a setting in Live Control Room. In OBS, the media playlist belongs to a VLC Video source. The stream key and server URL connect OBS to YouTube. Keep that encoder connection running while you make the source change.

Do not confuse an OBS playlist with YouTube’s HLS rolling playlist. HLS is an ingest protocol that delivers video in segments; its playlist rules concern those segments, not the program videos queued in OBS. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP and disables Ultra low-latency mode. YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance describes the protocol requirements.

Choose the right OBS source

What you need to play OBS source Relevant behavior

Multiple files in a sequence or shuffled order VLC Video Supports a media playlist, loop and shuffle options, and visibility behavior settings. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear.

OBS’s documentation lists Media Source formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. It documents VLC Video’s Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. These details come from the OBS Media Sources page dated January 11, 2022; check the installed OBS version if a particular format or default matters. OBS Media Sources documentation

Replace an OBS playlist without intentionally ending the live stream

  1. Leave the existing YouTube stream and encoder connection in place. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, keep the current stream active. OBS uses the stream key and server URL to send its feed to YouTube; an ordinary media-list change does not require resetting or replacing the key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
  2. Confirm the source type. In OBS, use the existing VLC Video source if it contains multiple playlist items. If the source is not available, install VLC and reopen or refresh OBS as needed. For one repeating file, a Media Source with Loop enabled may be more appropriate. OBS Media Sources documentation
  3. Edit the media items in the source properties. Replace or reorder the files in the VLC Video playlist while OBS’s stream output remains active. OBS documents playlist support and playback settings, but does not specify that every live edit is seamless or whether the current item will restart. Expect behavior to depend on the edit and software behavior; do not assume the current clip will continue uninterrupted.
  4. Check both local output and YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the intended video appears in OBS’s program output and in the Live Control Room preview. Listen for audio and continue monitoring the stream after the change. YouTube recommends checking preview and stream audio and video quality; it does not promise gap-free playlist edits. YouTube live streaming tips
  5. Keep a local recording for important or long-running programs. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. YouTube live stream archiving guidance

Keep the stream running, not just the playlist source

The encoder has to continue sending content to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder instructions state: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Keep OBS’s stream output active while editing the media source; stopping the output ends the stream. The cited guidance does not explicitly guarantee that changing a source can never cause a brief interruption, so verify the result rather than treating the edit as inherently seamless. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions

Troubleshooting playlist changes

  • VLC Video is missing: OBS requires VLC for this source. Install VLC, then check the sources available in OBS again. OBS Media Sources documentation
  • The new videos do not appear on the live output: Check the VLC Video playlist and OBS program output, then inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm the encoder is still sending the stream rather than relying on the local preview alone. YouTube live streaming tips
  • There is a picture or audio gap: A seamless transition is not documented as a guarantee. Inspect the source output and audio, and monitor YouTube’s preview after the edit. If an uninterrupted presentation is essential, test the same source change before a scheduled broadcast.
  • The archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording for material that must be preserved. YouTube live stream archiving guidance
  • You are changing HLS settings by mistake: HLS segment playlists are protocol-level ingest requirements, not OBS media queues. YouTube specifies 1–4 second TS segments, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist of no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. Those requirements do not control which program videos OBS plays. HLS also has higher latency than RTMP and disables Ultra low-latency mode. YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance
