How to Configure H.264 and H.265 for 4K 60fps YouTube Live

YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for H.265 at 4K60. Set CBR and two-second keyframes, then test the complete stream before your event.

For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, YouTube recommends a 50 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC. In either case, use CBR, set keyframes every two seconds (never more than four), and use RTMPS when available. For SDR, use Rec. 709 at 8-bit; for HDR, YouTube lists H.265 at 10-bit. These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality or connection stability.

Choose a codec and bitrate

Use the settings in this table as the starting point for a 4K60 YouTube Live stream. YouTube Help lists the minimum and recommended ingest bitrates below; its source page does not show a publication or revision year.

Setup Video bitrate Encoding Color
H.264, SDR 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended CBR Rec. 709, 8-bit
H.265/HEVC, SDR 10 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps recommended CBR Rec. 709, 8-bit

Both profiles are for 2160p at 60 fps. H.265 has the lower recommended bitrate in YouTube’s guide, but the guide does not establish that it will look better at equal bitrate or run with less encoder load. Choose a codec your encoder supports reliably. If your stream is HDR, follow the HDR guidance below rather than treating the SDR table as an HDR profile.

Set the shared encoder options

  • Protocol: Use RTMPS when available. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.
  • Rate control: Set video bitrate encoding to CBR.
  • Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds. Do not exceed four seconds.
  • Scan and pixels: Use progressive scan and a square pixel aspect ratio.
  • Advanced H.264 settings: YouTube lists two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC among its advanced recommendations.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for audio. For stereo, its guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, it lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.

Encoder applications label controls differently, so use the matching setting in your software rather than assuming a specific menu name or encoder. The recommendations here describe YouTube Live ingest, not YouTube’s separate bitrate guidance for uploaded videos.

Configure SDR and HDR correctly

SDR

For standard dynamic range, use Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth with either codec profile in the table.

HDR

YouTube lists H.265/HEVC as its HDR video codec and 10-bit depth for HDR. Its guide does not support AV1 for HDR, and it does not establish H.264 as the recommended HDR path. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR; if your encoder does not support the needed HDR capabilities over RTMP, YouTube says HLS can be considered. Confirm your encoder and signal chain are actually configured for HDR before selecting these settings.

Set up the stream in YouTube and test it

  1. Choose resolution handling. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to select resolution manually, create a custom stream key and turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution.
  2. Copy the stream key into your encoder. Use the key associated with the YouTube stream you intend to broadcast. Keep it private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
  3. Enter the video settings. Set 2160p, 60 fps, the chosen codec, the matching SDR or HDR color settings, the recommended bitrate, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval.
  4. Run a full pre-event test. YouTube advises testing before going live. Include audio and motion similar to the real event, then monitor stream health and review messages during the test and the event.
  5. Check latency expectations. YouTube’s guidance says 4K/2160 streams do not have the option to improve for low latency; they are optimized for quality and set to normal latency.

YouTube recommends choosing a quality that remains reliable for your upload connection. Its listed minimum is not a guarantee that your internet connection, encoder, scene, or viewers’ playback devices will sustain a good result.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems

  • Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: The outgoing stream may exceed what the upload connection can sustain. Test the connection while streaming and use a quality and bitrate that is reliable for it; YouTube’s recommended bitrate is a target, not proof that your connection can maintain it.
  • YouTube does not receive the expected resolution: Check whether automatic detection is enabled. If you need manual selection, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
  • HDR does not appear as intended: Verify that the encoder and full signal path are using H.265 and 10-bit HDR output. YouTube does not list H.264 as its recommended HDR codec.
  • Keyframe or bitrate warnings appear: Confirm CBR is selected, the keyframe interval is two seconds, and it does not exceed four seconds. Check that the configured bitrate matches your codec profile.
  • The stream cannot use low latency: This is expected for 4K/2160 in YouTube’s guidance; the 4K stream is set to normal latency.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving an encoder and computer running at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. StreamNeo plays uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Codec settings do not grant permission to broadcast game footage, music, or other material. Before scheduling a stream, check that you have the rights needed for every audio and video element. A technically healthy 4K stream can still be subject to copyright claims or YouTube policy enforcement; encoder configuration does not determine monetization eligibility.
