How to Loop Bedtime Stories on YouTube Live Without Restarting OBS

Use OBS Media Source for one compiled story video or VLC Video for a playlist of separate files. Enable the matching loop setting, preview the YouTube feed, and plan for rights and long-stream recording limits.

To repeat bedtime stories in a YouTube Live broadcast, set the loop on the media source inside OBS—not on YouTube’s viewer player. For one compiled video, use Media Source and enable Loop. For separate story files, use VLC Video, enable Loop Playlist, and leave shuffle off if the stories need to play in a fixed order. OBS can keep encoding while the source repeats; you do not need to restart OBS just to begin another pass.

Choose the right OBS source for your story files

Your files OBS source Loop setting Use it when
One compiled story video Media Source Loop Your stories have already been assembled into one file.
Several separate story files VLC Video Loop Playlist; leave shuffle off for a fixed order You want OBS to play the files as a playlist. VLC must be installed for this source type to appear.

The YouTube player’s Loop control repeats playback for an individual viewer. It does not make the encoder’s live feed repeat. Set looping in the OBS source so the repeated content is what OBS sends to YouTube.

Set up a single compiled story video

  1. In OBS, open the scene that will carry the live program.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
  3. In the source properties, select the local video file.
  4. Enable Loop, then confirm the properties.
  5. Check the scene preview to confirm the video is visible and its audio is reaching the OBS mixer.

Set up a playlist of separate stories

  1. Install VLC on the computer running OBS if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being present.
  2. In the active scene’s Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
  3. In the source properties, add the story files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave shuffle off if you want the stories to retain that order on each pass.
  5. Confirm the source and check the OBS preview and audio mixer before connecting to YouTube.

These source settings are the documented way to repeat local media. They do not establish that every system will have seamless transitions or identical gaps between files, so check the playback on the machine and files you plan to use.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and preview the feed

  1. Confirm your channel is verified and has had no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube requires both conditions for encoder streaming.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and go to the stream’s settings to obtain or select its connection information.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key or connect using the available account flow.
  4. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not share it publicly.
  5. Start the encoder from OBS, then wait for and inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast.
  6. Check the picture, story order, and audio level in the preview. During the broadcast, keep monitoring the output so a stalled source, muted track, or other playback problem is noticed.

A private or unlisted rehearsal is a sensible way to check your particular setup before a public stream, but it is an operational precaution rather than a guarantee against later interruptions.

Plan for long broadcasts and recordings

Looping can keep the OBS source repeating, but a long live session has separate YouTube archive and DVR considerations. YouTube says it may fail to capture an archive when a stream runs longer than 12 hours. If preserving the complete recording matters, make a local recording as a backup. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams longer than 12 hours. Decide whether DVR is appropriate for the broadcast and do not rely on it as the only way to preserve or revisit the program.

Clear rights to the complete bedtime program

Writing the stories yourself does not automatically clear every element in the broadcast. Confirm you have the necessary rights to any background music, illustrations, video, sound effects, or other third-party material. YouTube’s terms place responsibility for obtaining necessary rights on the provider, and YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. YouTube Help states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.”

A track you are licensed to use can still trigger an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Check the terms of each asset and, where relevant, ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel before relying on it in a long live broadcast.

Troubleshoot common loop and live-stream problems

  • VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC on the computer running OBS, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the source menu again.
  • Only one story plays: Check that all intended files are in the VLC Video playlist and that Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single compiled file, use Media Source and enable Loop.
  • Stories play in an unexpected order: Check that the playlist order is correct and shuffle is off.
  • The repeated video is not what viewers see: Confirm the looping media source is in the active OBS scene and visible in its preview. A loop setting on a source does not help if that source is not part of the live scene.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Check the stream service and key in OBS against the settings in Live Control Room, and verify that the channel meets YouTube’s verification and recent-restriction conditions.
  • The preview has no sound or picture: Inspect the OBS preview, the source’s playback, and the audio mixer before starting the public broadcast. Continue monitoring after it begins.
  • A live stream is interrupted by a rights match: Review every music and visual asset, confirm your permissions, and ask a relevant rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if you have a licence.
  • The YouTube archive is incomplete after a very long stream: YouTube may fail to capture archives for streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording when a complete copy matters.
