To see how many people are watching right now, open your platform’s live dashboard and check its concurrent-viewer metric. On YouTube, use Live Control Room; on Twitch, start with Creator Dashboard and its Stream Manager tools. These live figures are different from post-stream analytics, and the numbers may not match.
What “concurrent viewers” means
Concurrent viewers are the people watching at the same time. YouTube defines the metric as “The number of simultaneous viewers.” It is not the same as playbacks, which count viewing starts, or chat messages, which measure activity rather than audience size.
- Concurrent viewers: the live simultaneous audience shown during a broadcast.
- Peak concurrent viewers: the highest concurrent-viewer count reached during the stream.
- Average concurrent viewers: the average simultaneous audience over the period covered by a report.
- Playbacks: starts of the video, not a count of people watching at one moment.
Track YouTube viewers while you are live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the active broadcast.
- Look in its real-time analytics for Concurrent viewers. YouTube’s help documentation lists this metric alongside stream duration, chat messages and likes for mobile live streams.
- Use the live count to monitor the audience at that point in the broadcast. Do not read it as the total number of people who have ever started watching.
Check YouTube viewer statistics after the stream
After the broadcast ends, open YouTube Studio > Content > Live, select the stream, then open Analytics > Engagement. The video-level concurrent-viewers report becomes available within minutes after the stream ends.
The post-stream report can show peak and average concurrent viewers, which answer different questions: peak is the highest simultaneous audience; average describes the audience across the reported interval. YouTube says Analytics data is processed and despammed and measures different information from Live Control Room, so the live reading and processed report may not match. Treat each figure according to its label and context rather than as interchangeable counts.

Track Twitch viewers
Open Twitch Creator Dashboard, the platform’s home for streaming tools. Twitch identifies Stream Manager and Analytics among its dashboard tools. Use the live dashboard area to monitor the active stream and Analytics for viewer statistics over a selected date range. For an individual completed broadcast, Twitch’s Stream Summary provides per-stream performance statistics.
Twitch’s interface can change, so use the current dashboard labels rather than relying on an older menu path. The live count, a selected-date-range statistic and a stream summary are not necessarily the same measurement or time window.

Can you show viewer count in OBS?
OBS is the broadcast software; the underlying viewer number comes from the platform or an integrated service. For a simple count, keep YouTube Live Control Room or Twitch Creator Dashboard open alongside OBS. If you want a panel inside OBS, a third-party browser source or dock may provide one, but check which platform it supports, what account access it requests, and how it defines or refreshes its figures.
For Twitch, StreamScouter advertises real-time viewer analytics and an OBS browser-source viewer statistics panel. Those are the vendor’s claims, not an independent verification of accuracy or performance. Its page says it uses Twitch API information and that data starts accumulating after sign-in; review its current privacy details and authorization permissions before connecting an account. The vendor listed a free tier and a Pro plan at $6.99/month when accessed in 2026; pricing and features may change, so check the current page before relying on them. Its partner-program status is not established.

Why viewer counts can differ
- Different metric: a live concurrent count, peak, average and playback total are not equivalent.
- Different time window: a live reading captures a moment, while a summary may cover the entire stream or a chosen date range.
- Processing: YouTube says Analytics data is processed and despammed and differs from Live Control Room data.
- Different platform or tool: third-party services may present platform data with their own update timing or definitions. Do not treat a cross-platform sum as a canonical audience total; no reliable, synchronized official merged counter is established here.
