A router reboot breaks the network path between a local encoder such as OBS and YouTube. To reduce the outage, wait for the router to finish restarting, confirm the streaming computer is back online, check the encoder, and verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. No setting can guarantee seamless recovery after every reboot: YouTube and OBS document setup and troubleshooting, not an automatic-resumption guarantee.
What a router reboot interrupts
YouTube receives an encoder’s video through a stream URL and stream key; those connection settings identify where the feed goes, but they cannot keep a temporarily unavailable network online. YouTube’s encoder guide explains how an encoder connects to a live stream. A router reboot interrupts that connection, and the encoder may disconnect while the network returns.
That does not by itself tell you whether the public event remains live, is waiting for data, or has ended. Treat the encoder’s connection and the event’s state in Live Control Room as separate checks.
Recover the stream after the router comes back
- Wait for the router to finish rebooting. Avoid repeatedly power-cycling it while it is starting up.
- Confirm the streaming computer has internet access. Check that it can load a website; if it cannot, troubleshoot the router or ISP connection before changing OBS settings.
- Check OBS’s connection state and logs. OBS lists unstable networking and modem, router, or other network hardware among possible causes of dropped frames and disconnections. Its connection troubleshooting guide recommends a wired connection for streaming and provides network troubleshooting steps.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Use the event’s state to determine whether it is still live, waiting for data, or ended. YouTube’s live-stream settings guide covers configuring the event and encoder connection.
- If OBS has not reconnected, use its reconnect or start workflow. Then confirm YouTube is receiving the feed, rather than assuming that the router’s return to service restored the public broadcast.
- Test your recovery procedure during a planned maintenance window. Note how the router, ISP connection, encoder, and YouTube event behave in your setup. Recovery timing varies; the documented guidance does not establish a universal recovery time.
Should you reset the stream key?
Not just because the router rebooted. A stream key is part of the encoder’s connection settings, not a remedy for an unavailable network. YouTube describes resetting a key for key-specific problems; first restore connectivity and check the existing encoder and event state. Change the key only if you have a separate reason to believe the key itself is the problem.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a fix for the failure you actually have
Downtime reduction depends on which part failed: the local Wi-Fi link, the WAN/ISP connection, router power, or the router itself. A backup helps only if it covers the failing component and the encoder/session recovers onto it.
| Option | What it can address | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Wired Ethernet from the encoder computer to the router | Local Wi-Fi instability. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming. | It cannot stop a router reboot or fix an ISP-side outage. |
| Dual-WAN failover | Loss of a primary WAN when a configured secondary path and failure detection are available. ASUS documents this behavior for supported configurations in its Dual WAN setup guidance; model and firmware support vary. | It does not establish continuity through a reboot of the router performing failover. |
| Cloud fallback video | A configured service feature may show fallback video to viewers during an encoder disconnect. Restream says its disconnect protection is limited to certain plans; plan terms can change. | It does not restore the local router or keep the encoder’s originating connection online. |
| RTMPS | Encrypts the encoder-to-YouTube connection using TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. | Encryption does not prevent network downtime. |
| Router battery backup or UPS | May be relevant if a power interruption caused the reboot and the relevant equipment is actually powered by the backup. | The cause of a particular reboot and an appropriate model are not established here. A UPS cannot prevent a deliberate or software reboot or an ISP outage. |
Before investing in a failover or backup arrangement, check whether its alternate path is independent, what failure it detects, how long switching takes, and whether your encoder and YouTube event resume. None of these options supports a blanket promise of zero downtime.

RTMPS is security, not a reconnect setting
RTMPS encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube. It is useful for protecting the connection, but it does not prevent a router reboot or make an interrupted network path available again.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 channel plays uploaded or prerecorded video, StreamNeo moves the originating stream off your home computer and connection: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs continuously from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera.
