Start with the timestamped error in YouTube Live Control Room—not a guessed BSNL router setting. Check whether the encoder lost its connection, YouTube reports an ingest problem, or only viewers are having trouble. Then compare measured upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate, test Ethernet against Wi-Fi, and verify the encoder settings. The right router menus depend on its exact model and firmware; there is no universal BSNL FTTH setting established for this problem.
First, find out what is disconnecting
A stream that appears offline to viewers does not always mean the router dropped the encoder. Establish which part of the path failed before changing settings.
- Check the encoder. Note whether it reports a dropped connection, reconnects, or continues streaming normally.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review stream health and any specific status messages. Record the message and its timestamp; YouTube says to monitor stream health and review messages during the event. YouTube Help: Monitor your live stream.
- Compare the timing. Match YouTube’s timestamps with encoder logs and, if available, router event logs. A matching event helps narrow down where the interruption occurred.
- Ask who is affected. If only one viewer reports trouble, that viewer’s connection may be the issue. If viewers sharing one internet connection have trouble, investigate that network. Reports from viewers on different connections can point toward the encoder; if it looks and sounds healthy, check the outbound internet connection. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
This distinction matters: a router setting cannot fix a viewer-side playback problem, and changing settings before identifying the symptom can make diagnosis harder.
Check sustained upload capacity and leave headroom
Measure upload speed, not just the download speed shown in a plan or speed test. A live stream continuously sends data upstream, and available upload capacity can fluctuate or be shared with other users and devices.

- Run an upload test while the stream is not active, preferably more than once at different times. Record the results and whether other devices are using the connection.
- Compare available upload capacity with the encoder’s configured bitrate. Include both primary and backup stream bitrates if you are using encoder failover.
- Allow room for network variation and other traffic. YouTube recommends a 20% bandwidth margin; its guidance says the primary stream, backup stream, and margin should fit within available upload bandwidth. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
If upload capacity is close to the stream’s total bitrate, reduce the encoder bitrate or reduce competing network traffic, then observe whether the disconnects stop. A single speed-test result is not proof that the connection can sustain the stream continuously.
Verify encoder bitrate and keyframes
A stream can fail even when the router is working normally. Check the encoder’s output settings against the available upload and YouTube’s guidance rather than choosing a bitrate based on resolution alone.

- Bitrate: Choose a value appropriate to the resolution and the measured, sustained upload capacity. There is no single bitrate that is right for every continuous stream.
- Failover: If you use a primary and backup encoder, include both bitrates when checking upload headroom.
After any change, monitor the stream-health messages and note their timestamps so you can tell whether the symptom changed. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet test
If the encoder is connected over Wi-Fi, test it over Ethernet if practical. This helps isolate whether the wireless link is contributing to interruptions; it is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed cure for a router or ISP fault.

- Connect the encoder to the router or ONT using Ethernet, following your existing network layout.
- Keep the stream and encoder settings the same during the comparison.
- Watch for disconnects and record their times. Compare the result with a Wi-Fi session of similar duration and network use.
YouTube’s failover test instructions include unplugging the primary encoder’s Ethernet cable to confirm that a backup encoder takes over. That supports testing the wired path in a failover setup; it does not show that Ethernet fixes every disconnect. YouTube Help: Test failover.
Check RTMPS timeouts without opening ports indiscriminately
If the encoder reports “connection timed out” or an SSL certificate error, confirm that it is configured with YouTube’s correct RTMPS ingest URL and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube mentions port 443 when troubleshooting an SSL certificate error. That is not general advice to forward inbound ports for every stream interruption, nor a reason to disable router security. Follow the error-specific guidance and the encoder maker’s instructions. YouTube Help: Fix streaming errors.

Only investigate router settings after collecting model details
BSNL FTTH service can involve different ONT/router models, firmware and network layouts. Without those details, there is no responsible universal menu path or value to recommend for WAN keep-alive, NAT timeouts, DNS or Wi-Fi settings.

- Whether the encoder connects by Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and how the ONT, router and any additional access points are connected.
- The encoder’s exact error, YouTube’s stream-health message and timestamps for each interruption.
- Whether upload tests show enough sustained capacity and headroom for the configured stream bitrate.
- Whether the issue occurs over Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi, and whether other devices or viewers are affected.
If evidence points to an outbound internet-path problem, YouTube advises contacting the ISP. Share the timestamps and symptoms rather than asking for a generic “streaming setting.”
Common symptoms and the next check
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Encoder reports a dropped connection | Compare its logs with Live Control Room timestamps; test upload headroom and Ethernet. |
| YouTube shows an ingest or stream-health error | Record the exact message, verify encoder bitrate and keyframe interval, and check the configured RTMPS URL if the error concerns connection or SSL. |
| Encoder appears healthy but viewers report playback trouble | Ask whether reports come from one viewer, people on the same connection, or viewers on unrelated connections; use that pattern to distinguish viewer-side, local-network and encoder possibilities. |
| Disconnects happen only on Wi-Fi | Repeat a comparable session over Ethernet to isolate the wireless link. |
| Disconnects persist on Ethernet and upload has little headroom | Lower the encoder bitrate or reduce competing traffic; retest sustained upload capacity. |
| “Connection timed out” or SSL certificate error | Verify RTMPS URL and encoder support; for an SSL error, follow YouTube’s port 443 guidance rather than adding unrelated port forwards. |
