To randomize a video playlist in OBS, add a VLC Video Source, load your video files, and enable Shuffle Playlist. Turn on Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart when the list ends. OBS—not YouTube—shuffles the files before encoding the stream.
Set up a shuffled playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s Media Sources documentation says VLC must be installed for VLC Video Source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The source is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Add the source. In OBS, use the Sources dock’s + button and choose VLC Video Source. See the OBS Sources Guide for the source-adding workflow.
- Load your files. Open the source’s properties and add the local media files to its playlist. OBS lists formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check the current supported formats if your files use another format.
- Enable shuffle and looping. Check Shuffle Playlist to randomize playback order. Check Loop Playlist to restart the list after it reaches the end. OBS documents shuffle as off and loop as on by default, so verify both settings rather than relying on defaults. The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, published January 11, 2022, defines shuffle as randomizing the media files played instead of keeping the file-list order.
- Set behavior when the source is hidden. Choose whether it should stop and restart, pause and resume, or keep playing while not visible. This setting matters if you hide the source or switch to another scene; if it remains visible on the active scene, it is less likely to affect playback.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube’s Live Control Room encoder workflow and create or select a livestream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the broadcast. Confirm that both picture and audio are present. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking local archive files as they grow in its live-streaming tips.
If you are enabling live streaming on the channel for the first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Its eligibility guidance also requires a verified channel with no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days; YouTube’s streaming guidance sets the minimum age at 16.
What shuffle does—and what it does not guarantee
Shuffle changes the order of the playlist; loop restarts playback when the list ends. Those are separate behaviors. OBS does not document a guarantee that it creates a fresh random order at every loop boundary. Its current source implementation and version can affect when the list is shuffled. An issue filed for OBS 32.1.1 on April 26, 2026, requested reshuffling on initialization or reload and was closed as not planned; it is a report about that behavior, not proof that every OBS setup behaves identically. If you need to know whether your list changes order after a complete cycle, test it with your exact OBS version and source settings before leaving it unattended. Do not assume that enabling shuffle guarantees a newly randomized sequence each time the playlist loops.

Prepare a 24/7 broadcast for the practical risks
Keep the local encoder and connection available
With this setup, OBS is the encoder sending the playlist to YouTube. The computer running OBS, VLC, and the media files must remain available, and its internet connection must stay stable. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth about 20% above the stream’s bitrate; interruptions can break the broadcast. Follow its current streaming tips and leave headroom for ordinary network fluctuations rather than using your full upload capacity.
Do not count on a complete 24-hour YouTube replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends making a local recording as a backup. YouTube’s DVR guidance also notes that rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If a complete replay matters, do not rely on the YouTube archive or DVR for one uninterrupted 24-hour stream.

Confirm rights for every file
You are responsible for having the rights needed to broadcast the playlist, including applicable music rights. Shuffling or looping files does not grant permission to rebroadcast them. YouTube’s livestream terms require content providers to hold the necessary rights and comply with platform rules and applicable law.
Troubleshooting OBS shuffle and looping
- VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then restart OBS. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- A file will not play: Check that it uses a format supported by the VLC Video Source, then try adding the file again. The documented list includes common video and audio formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
- The same order appears after the list ends: Looping restarts playback, but OBS does not promise a new shuffle at every loop. Test the behavior on your exact version and configuration; do not treat looping as reshuffling.
- Playback stops when you change scenes or hide the source: Reopen the source properties and review its behavior while not visible. Select the stop/restart, pause/resume, or keep-playing option that matches how you use scenes.
- YouTube does not receive a usable preview: Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream, that the encoder is running, and that the channel is eligible to go live. Then check the preview and connection quality in Live Control Room.
- The stream disconnects during a long run: Check for network interruptions and ensure upload capacity has the headroom YouTube recommends. OBS depends on the local computer and connection for this encoder setup.
