YouTube Live Stream Drops to a Lower Resolution After Reconnecting: How to Restore Quality

Select the highest available resolution in YouTube’s player, then compare networks and viewers to narrow down why the live stream keeps dropping in quality.

Open the YouTube player’s Settings → Quality menu and select the highest resolution available. If the picture drops again or buffers, check the connection and whether other viewers are affected: YouTube adjusts playback quality to viewing conditions, and the symptom alone cannot show whether the cause is your device, network, or the broadcaster’s incoming stream.

Restore the highest available quality

  1. Choose a resolution manually. In the YouTube player, select Settings → Quality, then choose the highest option shown. The available choices depend on the video and playback environment. If the resolution you want is not listed, YouTube’s help guidance does not promise a way for the viewer to force it to appear. YouTube Help: change video quality.
  2. Check whether the connection is struggling. Try another available network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, and consider whether other devices or apps are using bandwidth. A speed test is only a snapshot; it cannot establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a live stream.
  3. Retry playback and compare environments. Reopen the video or restart the app or device if appropriate. Check for app or system updates, then try another supported device or connection. These steps can help isolate the problem, but do not by themselves prove its cause.
  4. Ask whether other viewers see the same drop. If only you are affected, start with your device and internet connection. If several viewers using the same network are affected, investigate that shared connection. If viewers on different networks report the same issue, the broadcaster’s outgoing stream becomes a more plausible cause.

YouTube says it changes playback quality based on viewing conditions, including connection speed, player or screen size, the source’s quality, and browser capability. Reconnecting may coincide with a quality change, but YouTube’s documentation does not identify reconnection as a universal cause or guarantee that a manually chosen resolution will stay selected afterward. YouTube Help: troubleshoot video streaming issues.

Use speed figures as a guide, not a guarantee

YouTube Help gives these approximate sustained connection speeds for playback. The retrieved page does not state a publication year; the figures were accessed in 2026 and are not guarantees for a live stream.

Playback resolution Approximate sustained speed
4K 20 Mbps
1080p 5 Mbps
720p 2.5 Mbps
480p 1.1 Mbps
360p 0.7 Mbps

These are viewer-side download recommendations. They are not the same as the encoder’s upload bitrate, and meeting one figure in a speed test does not rule out congestion or instability. YouTube also identifies network congestion and other factors as possible causes of live programming issues. YouTube Help: live stream troubleshooting.

When the broadcaster should check stream health

If viewers on separate networks report the same quality problem, the creator should inspect the outgoing feed rather than relying on viewers to change their player settings. YouTube transcodes an incoming live feed into multiple output formats, but a viewer’s selected resolution cannot repair a poor or missing incoming rendition.

  • Check the Live Control Room for stream-health indicators and error messages.
  • Verify the encoder’s output, outbound connection stability, and that resolution, frame rate, and codec settings match the intended ingest configuration.
  • Run a test stream before the event and monitor stream health while live.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary by ingest resolution, frame rate, and codec. For example, its H.264 table lists 1080p at 30 fps with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate; for 1080p at 60 fps, it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. The retrieved recommendation page does not state a publication year; these figures were accessed in 2026. They describe encoder upload bitrate, not the viewer download speeds in the table above. Common symptoms and what to check

What you see What to check next
The quality menu offers lower resolutions, or the stream keeps stepping down for you Try another network and playback environment. Compare with other viewers to determine whether the issue is local or broader.
The stream buffers as well as dropping in quality Check for competing network use, compare Wi-Fi with another connection, and retry on another supported device. A brief speed test cannot confirm sustained stability.
Viewers on different networks report the same problem Ask the broadcaster to check Live Control Room stream health, encoder output, and ingest settings.
The desired resolution is missing from Settings → Quality Try another supported device or browser, but understand that the viewer can select only from the options YouTube makes available for that video and playback environment.

If a creator is choosing stream latency settings, YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. That is a broadcaster setting trade-off, not a viewer-side fix for a reconnect-related quality drop. YouTube Help: live streaming latency.
