If YouTube Live Control Room shows no data from an encoder on a Mumbai VPS, check the event’s stream URL and key, confirm the encoder is producing audio and video, verify its RTMP or RTMPS configuration, then test the VPS’s outbound connection and upload capacity. “No data” identifies a symptom, not its cause; official YouTube guidance does not establish a Mumbai-specific block or outage.
What “no data” tells you—and what it doesn’t
Live Control Room can show no incoming data when the encoder is not sending a usable feed. The cause could be incorrect event credentials, an encoder that never started or is not producing output, a protocol mismatch, or a problem with outbound connectivity. The message alone does not distinguish among those possibilities.
There is no basis in YouTube’s published troubleshooting guidance to conclude that Mumbai itself is blocked or that YouTube ingest is down there. To diagnose a particular VPS, you need evidence from its encoder and network path, such as logs, connection tests, and outbound-capacity measurements.
Diagnose the stream in order
1. Check the intended event’s URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open the intended live event in Live Control Room.
- Copy that event’s stream URL and stream key again. They are separate settings: the URL is the destination, while the key identifies the stream. YouTube explains these roles in Manage live stream settings and shows how to copy them in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Compare both values with the encoder configuration. Make sure the encoder is using the values for this event, not an older stream or another event.
- If the key may be wrong or stale, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots, public logs, or support posts.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends a new key when a third-party encoder reports a startup error.

2. Confirm the encoder is running and producing a feed
- Check that the encoder process is active and that its preview or output monitor shows the expected video and audio.
- Read the encoder’s logs and error messages for startup, authentication, capture, or encoding failures. Confirm the software version and check whether CPU load is high enough to disrupt encoding.
- Verify the source itself: a running encoder cannot send useful video or audio if its input is missing, muted, or otherwise misconfigured.
- If you have enabled a local recording, inspect it. A recording with the same missing or broken content points toward capture or encoding; a clean local recording while YouTube receives nothing makes the outbound path a more useful next check.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting flow recommends checking output quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive.
3. Match the destination URL to the encoder’s protocol
Use the server URL shown for the selected event in Live Control Room. Do not substitute a hostname copied from an unrelated guide. RTMP and RTMPS are not interchangeable settings: YouTube defines RTMPS as RTMP secured with TLS/SSL and recommends it. The RTMPS address may need to be revealed explicitly because the interface can show an RTMP address by default. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.

- For a timeout: check that the configured server URL and protocol match the event, and confirm that the encoder supports the selected protocol.
- For an SSL error: check that you selected the RTMPS URL and that the encoder’s RTMPS configuration is supported. YouTube’s troubleshooting also discusses port 443 for SSL issues.
- If considering HLS: use it only if your encoder supports it and you follow YouTube’s separate HLS setup flow. Switching protocols is a compatibility option, not evidence that HLS will repair a particular VPS route.
4. Test outbound connectivity and capacity from the VPS
Run network and upload-capacity checks from the Mumbai VPS itself, or through tools that use its actual outbound route. Testing from your laptop or checking only download speed does not establish what the VPS can send to YouTube. Confirm that outbound traffic to the selected ingest endpoint is permitted and stable; review the provider’s egress firewall rules if the route fails.
Compare available outbound upload capacity with the stream’s total configured bitrate and allow headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% beyond the total bitrate of the stream. A test that barely matches the target bitrate may leave too little capacity for a stable feed.

5. Check settings against the stream profile
There is no single correct bitrate independent of codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance lists these examples for 1080p at 30 fps:
| Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s figures for that profile, not a diagnosis of a Mumbai route. Match the recommendation to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually selected, then confirm the VPS has sufficient outbound capacity with headroom.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
YouTube’s settings guidance specifies CBR bitrate encoding for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Check that your encoder’s output profile matches those settings and that the chosen codec and resolution are supported by the encoder and event setup.
6. Use stream health once YouTube receives data
After the feed starts arriving, use the health and status messages in Live Control Room to investigate ingest quality. A controlled test with representative movement and audio can expose problems that a static or silent feed will not. YouTube describes the available health information and real-time metrics in See your live stream’s metrics. Before a real event, test the setup and consider YouTube’s live-streaming tips on archiving, failover, and event accessibility.

Common failures and what to check next
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No data immediately after starting | Wrong event URL or key, encoder not started, or no encoded output | Recopy the event credentials, inspect encoder status and logs, and confirm its preview contains audio and video. |
| Third-party encoder reports a startup or key error | Stale or incorrect stream key | Reset the key in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder; protect the new key as a credential. |
| Connection times out | Wrong destination or protocol, unsupported protocol, or outbound path failure | Verify the event URL and encoder support, then test outbound connectivity from the VPS. |
| SSL or TLS error with RTMPS | RTMP URL selected instead of RTMPS, incorrect RTMPS settings, or an issue involving port 443 | Reveal and use the event’s RTMPS URL, confirm encoder support, and check the port guidance in YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting. |
| Encoder preview or local recording is also wrong | Source capture, audio routing, or encoding load | Fix the input or encoder problem before investigating YouTube ingest. |
| Connection begins but health warnings appear | Profile mismatch, insufficient outbound capacity, or unstable delivery | Read the specific health message, check the codec and profile settings, and measure outbound capacity with headroom. |
| Local internet test works, VPS stream does not | The VPS’s distinct outbound route, provider firewall, or available upload capacity | Repeat checks from the VPS or its provider’s network tools; a local test does not verify the server path. |
