At Sony’s current U.S. recommended prices, the PS5 Pro costs $899.99 and the standard PS5 costs $649.99—a $250 difference. The Pro can be worth that premium if the specific games you play have enhancements you value and your display can show the improvements you want. It is not a universal upgrade: Sony says results vary by title, and the Pro has no disc drive built in.
Current U.S. prices: the Pro costs $250 more
Sony announced new U.S. recommended retail prices on March 27, 2026, effective April 2, 2026. At those prices, the standard PS5 is $649.99, the PS5 Digital Edition is $599.99, and the PS5 Pro is $899.99. The Pro therefore costs $250 more than the standard PS5 at recommended prices. Sony’s pricing announcement is the relevant current baseline; its older 2024 launch post listed a $699.99 Pro launch MSRP, which is no longer the current U.S. recommended price.
PlayStation Direct listed the 2 TB Pro for $899, the 1 TB standard PS5 for $649, and the 825 GB Digital Edition for $599 when checked for this comparison. These are dated observations from Sony’s U.S. store, not guaranteed prices at other retailers or in the future. Check PlayStation Direct for current listings, and compare local retailer offers before buying.
What the extra money gets you
Game-specific graphics and performance features
Sony describes PS5 Pro features including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame rates. Its U.S. product page says compatible games can run at 60 fps or up to 120 fps with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution using PSSR. Those are manufacturer descriptions of what compatible games can support, not a guarantee that every game reaches those figures or improves in the same way. Sony explicitly says results vary by title. See Sony’s PS5 Pro feature details and game list.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sony’s product page lists more than 100 PS5 titles as enhanced for PS5 Pro. Its examples with enhanced PSSR support include Resident Evil Requiem, Silent Hill f, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, Control, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077. The list is subject to change, and inclusion does not mean every title gets the same kind or degree of improvement. Check the current official list for the games you actually play.
Upgraded PSSR support
On March 16, 2026, Sony announced a system software update introducing broad support for an upgraded PSSR version. Sony said it is intended to improve image stability, clarity in fine details, and consistency in supported titles; it named Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Crimson Desert, and others. Sony also says an enhanced PSSR setting can be enabled for supported existing games, with results varying by title. Read Sony’s announcement about the upgraded PSSR rollout.

More storage and Wi-Fi 7
The Pro has a 2 TB SSD and Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, according to Sony’s product page. Those specifications may matter if you want more built-in storage or have a network that can take advantage of Wi-Fi 7. Their practical value depends on your game library, router, and setup; they do not by themselves establish a graphics or frame-rate improvement.
Disc owners need to account for an extra purchase
The PS5 Pro is disc-less. If you own physical PS5 games or want to play Blu-ray discs, factor in the separate compatible PS5 Disc Drive and check its current price and availability before deciding. Sony’s 2024 launch announcement described the drive as a separate purchase, but the price and availability can change. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement covers the disc-less design and separate drive.

Which PS5 should you buy?
Choose the standard PS5 if value matters most
- You are satisfied with how your current games perform on a standard PS5.
- Your regular games are not among the Pro-enhanced titles you care about, or their enhancements would not change your experience.
- You would rather keep the $250 price difference for games or other purchases.
This is the value-oriented choice based on the current recommended-price gap and Sony’s game-dependent feature claims, not a claim that every standard PS5 player will have the same experience.
Consider the PS5 Pro if its particular upgrades matter to you
- Your favorite games have Pro enhancements, and the listed changes—such as image quality, ray tracing, or frame-rate options—are meaningful to you.
- You have a compatible display and want to make use of the available output features. A 4K or 120 Hz display can be relevant, but it does not guarantee a particular mode or improvement in every game.
- You value the Pro’s 2 TB storage or Wi-Fi 7 compatibility enough to include them in your decision.
Before buying, check the support information for your own games rather than assuming “enhanced” means a specific frame rate or visual result. Sony’s published descriptions do not provide a single improvement that applies across the whole library.

A practical four-point comparison
- Compare the prices you can actually pay. Use Sony’s current U.S. recommended prices as a reference, then check retailer offers in your area.
- Check your regular games. Look for Pro-specific enhancements in the current official list and decide whether those particular changes matter to you.
- Match the console to your display. Consider the screen and features you own or plan to use; the presence of a 4K or 120 Hz display alone does not ensure a particular game will use every feature.
- Add the disc-drive cost if needed. If you use physical games or Blu-ray discs, include a compatible drive and confirm its current availability before comparing totals.
Sony’s sources describe features and supported titles, rather than independent cross-game measurements. The decision is therefore best made around your library, display, disc needs, and local price—not an assumed universal performance gain.
