If a YouTube stream loses audio after FFmpeg reconnects, first find out which connection reconnected. FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options can recover an HTTP input connection, but they do not select or restore an audio stream in the output. Check the source, FFmpeg’s stream mapping, and YouTube’s ingest health separately.
1. Identify what reconnected
FFmpeg’s reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and reconnect_on_network_error options are HTTP protocol options. They may help when FFmpeg is reading an HTTP input; they do not fix an RTMP or RTMPS output disconnect, nor do they decide which audio stream is sent. See the FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation and check that the options match the protocol and side of the connection that actually failed.
- HTTP input reconnect: verify that the source is reachable and that its audio stream is still available after the reconnect.
- Streaming output reconnect: investigate the output connection, FFmpeg logs, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. HTTP input reconnect flags are not a remedy for an RTMP/RTMPS output failure.
The title alone cannot identify the cause: the FFmpeg version, input layout, command, reconnect logs, and YouTube health report all matter.
2. Check FFmpeg’s audio mapping
FFmpeg needs to select the audio stream you intend to send. For one input containing both video and audio, an explicit example is:

-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0This means the first video stream and first audio stream from input 0. It is only correct if that input actually contains those streams. If audio comes from a second input, map the audio stream from that input instead; input and stream indices depend on your source.
Inspect the full command and FFmpeg’s stream-mapping output before and after the reconnect. Confirm that the intended audio input is present and that FFmpeg maps it to the output. Avoid making the audio map optional when your goal is to ensure the output contains audio: optional mapping can let FFmpeg continue without an audio stream rather than restoring it.

3. Use YouTube’s health report to check the output
Open YouTube Live Control Room and read the stream-health messages for the affected broadcast. YouTube identifies missing or multiple audio streams, unsupported audio codecs, sample-rate problems, and too many audio channels as possible ingest issues. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and live streaming error messages rather than assuming a reconnect alone is responsible.
- Confirm that the output contains exactly one intended audio stream.
- Check that it uses an accepted codec such as AAC or MP3.
- Compare its sample rate and channel count with YouTube’s current requirements and the health report.
- If YouTube reports no audio, check the encoder configuration and whether audio is enabled in the source or output setup.
4. Pinpoint where the audio disappears
Compare observations at several points: FFmpeg’s output or preview, any local recording, YouTube’s health messages, and the outbound connection. YouTube recommends checking source routing, encoder errors and CPU load, a local archive, and the outbound internet connection in its live streaming troubleshooting guidance.

- Audio is already missing in FFmpeg’s output or local recording: investigate the source, input availability, stream mapping, and FFmpeg processing.
- Audio remains in the local recording, but YouTube reports a problem: compare the outgoing stream’s audio codec, sample rate, and channel count with YouTube’s health messages, and check the outbound connection.
- The evidence is inconclusive: capture the FFmpeg command and logs around the reconnect, and note the exact YouTube health message. These checks narrow down the failure; they do not prove a root cause on their own.
5. Run a representative test before going live
Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, not just a silent or static source. YouTube recommends testing under representative conditions and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Record the command, relevant reconnect logs, and health messages so you can compare what FFmpeg sent with what YouTube received. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and its troubleshooting steps.
