Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn Linux, run FFmpeg under a systemd service with Restart=on-failure and a deliberate RestartSec= delay. That restarts FFmpeg after an eligible process exit. It does not fix every network or output failure, and a restarted process alone does not prove that YouTube has resumed the intended broadcast.
Choose recovery for the failure that actually occurred
There are three distinct recovery layers. A process supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg after it exits; FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry certain output failures while FFmpeg remains running; protocol-specific reconnect options apply only to supported protocols and directions. Treating these as interchangeable can leave a stream stalled even though one part appears healthy.
| Failure | Recovery component | Does FFmpeg remain running? | How to check success |
|---|---|---|---|
| Input or network disconnect | Protocol-specific FFmpeg reconnect behavior, if supported for that protocol and direction | Depends on the failure and configuration | Review FFmpeg logs and verify media reaches YouTube |
| Output failure while FFmpeg is still alive | FIFO muxer recovery, when configured and applicable | Yes | Review logs and verify the encoder and broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room |
| FFmpeg exits after a crash or error | External supervisor such as systemd | No; the supervisor starts a new process | Check service status and logs, then verify the encoder and broadcast in Live Control Room |
Restart FFmpeg after it exits with systemd
The following is a Linux pattern, not a complete drop-in service: adapt it to your host, installed systemd version, FFmpeg build, input and output, and secret-storage setup. A service manager can relaunch FFmpeg only when the service’s configured conditions and restart policy treat the exit as restartable.
1. Prepare the command and protect credentials
First, make sure the FFmpeg command works when run under the same Linux account and environment the service will use. Use YouTube’s current encoder details for the particular broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS and identifies the stream key in Live Control Room as part of encoder setup. Keep the key private: do not put it in a published unit file, shell history, screenshots, or logs. Use a protected configuration mechanism appropriate for your host; YouTube’s setup guidance establishes how the key is used, not which local secret-storage method to choose. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and RTMPS setup guidance.

For video, YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Check the live guidance for the current codec and other encoder settings, and set them for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one command fits every stream.
2. Create a service that runs FFmpeg in the foreground
Create a system service for the FFmpeg command, with an explicit user, working directory, and protected way to supply credentials. The essential restart settings look like this:

[Service]
# Set User=, WorkingDirectory=, and a protected credential/configuration method.
# ExecStart= should run FFmpeg in the foreground with your tested command.
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
This excerpt shows the restart policy, not a complete unit file. Put the actual command in ExecStart= and configure the service according to your distribution and security requirements. Restart=on-failure is a common choice when a nonzero FFmpeg exit should trigger a relaunch; RestartSec= sets the wait before restart. Confirm exact behavior against the systemd version and the rest of the unit configuration on your host. Avoid hiding repeated failures: use service conditions and logs that make restart loops visible.
3. Load and test the service
After creating or changing a unit, tell systemd to reload its configuration, start the service, and inspect its status and logs. Exact service names and administration permissions vary by Linux distribution. Test recovery deliberately in a controlled setting by stopping or terminating the FFmpeg process in a way that exercises the failure policy. Confirm that the supervisor starts a new process; then separately confirm that the stream reaches YouTube. A service showing as active is not proof that the broadcast is live.

Handle output failures that do not stop FFmpeg
If FFmpeg remains alive while publishing is stalled or its output is failing, systemd may see a running process and take no action. For supported output failures, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer provides a separate recovery path. Its documentation gives an RTMP example that continues processing at real-time rate during a temporary network outage and attempts recovery every second indefinitely, using -attempt_recovery 1 and -recovery_wait_time 1. That one-second interval is an example configuration, not a measured recovery guarantee.
Consult the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation, check the options against the installed FFmpeg version and build, and test with the actual input and destination before relying on it. FIFO recovery is not a replacement for a supervisor: if FFmpeg exits, process-level restart still needs an external supervisor or equivalent wrapper.

Do not assume protocol reconnect options restart a crashed process
FFmpeg reconnect options are protocol-specific. Before adding one, check which protocol it supports and whether it applies to the input or output direction in your use case. An input reconnect setting is not a universal way to recover a failed YouTube publishing connection, and no protocol option replaces a supervisor when the FFmpeg process has exited. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation for the options supported by the relevant protocol.

- Inspect FFmpeg’s service and application logs for connection errors or repeated exits.
- Check the current encoder details and stream key for the intended broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room; use RTMPS as YouTube recommends.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that the encoder has connected, stream health is acceptable, and the intended event or broadcast is in the expected state.
Do not promise that a broadcast will automatically resume after FFmpeg restarts. Check the channel’s configuration and observed behavior for the specific event.
Troubleshoot common recovery failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits but does not restart | The service restart policy, unit conditions, or exit status do not make this failure eligible for restart | Inspect the unit, systemd status, and logs; verify the policy against the host’s systemd version and test the relevant failure case. |
| FFmpeg restarts repeatedly | The original cause remains, such as an invalid command, unavailable input, or rejected destination configuration | Read the FFmpeg and service logs, fix the underlying error, and ensure restart attempts remain visible rather than treating a loop as a healthy stream. |
| Service is active but YouTube is not receiving a usable stream | FFmpeg may still be alive while output is stalled, or the destination configuration may be wrong | Check FFmpeg logs and Live Control Room. Consider FIFO recovery for a supported output failure; use deployment-specific monitoring if you need to detect a live process that is not delivering useful media. |
| FFmpeg restarts but the intended broadcast is not live | A process restart does not guarantee that YouTube accepted the encoder or resumed that broadcast | Check the encoder connection, stream health, correct broadcast, and expected state in Live Control Room. |
| Reconnect option has no effect on publishing | The option may target another protocol or direction | Check the installed FFmpeg documentation for that protocol and whether the option applies to output; use a supervisor for process exits. |
