You can run a continuous YouTube Live stream from a VPS by creating a stream in YouTube Studio, configuring an encoder on the server with YouTube’s stream URL and key, and keeping that encoder running. The hard part is not connecting YouTube: it is confirming that the VPS can sustain your chosen workload and that its monthly data allowance, renewal terms and payment rules suit a 24/7 broadcast. A VPS-hosted feed is not guaranteed to become a complete YouTube archive; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
What you need before buying a VPS
A VPS is a rented server that stays online independently of your home computer. For YouTube Live, it runs an encoder that sends video and audio to YouTube’s ingest server. Depending on your workflow, the VPS may encode the video or simply relay a compatible pre-encoded feed; encoding generally places a greater demand on server resources. Neither a plan’s advertised specifications nor a provider’s streaming label proves that it will handle your exact stream continuously.
- A YouTube channel with access to live streaming and a stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio.
- A VPS with an operating system and enough CPU, memory and storage for your chosen encoder and media files.
- Encoder software configured with YouTube’s server URL, stream key and compatible output settings.
- Sufficient sustained outbound capacity and monthly transfer allowance for the selected bitrate.
- A restart and monitoring plan, plus a separate recording if you need to preserve the full broadcast.
Before paying, confirm the provider’s current plan availability, recurring price, renewal amount, tax, transfer and fair-use rules, server location, support, accepted prepaid payment methods, auto-renewal, cancellation and refund terms. The India-focused provider examples below do not establish these checkout details.
Choose how the video reaches YouTube
Encode on the VPS
The server decodes or reads your source and encodes a live output. This can suit files or scenes that need conversion, but the VPS must sustain the actual encoding workload at your intended resolution and frame rate. Test the selected machine with representative content; do not infer performance from vCPU count alone.

Relay a compatible feed
If your video is already encoded in a format and settings YouTube accepts, a relay workflow may avoid re-encoding. That can reduce processing demands, but it still needs reliable outbound bandwidth, a continuously running process and enough transfer allowance. Confirm that your chosen software and media format support the workflow before relying on it.
A command-line encoder can be practical for looping files on a headless server; a graphical workflow such as OBS may suit users who need scenes and desktop controls. The appropriate choice depends on your media and system. The official settings below are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular encoder command or VPS configuration will work.

Set YouTube’s recommended live output settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS for ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). For H.264, its recommended bitrate varies by output size and frame rate:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations; the page shows no publication year. They are for H.264 video, not an all-in measurement of every stream’s total network use. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams for different playback formats, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured feed.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream bitrate for upload capacity and testing outbound connectivity. For example, a 10 Mbps video bitrate calls for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under that recommendation; audio and protocol overhead also consume capacity. Use a sustained test rather than a brief peak reading, and leave room for other traffic if the server shares its network capacity.
Set up the YouTube stream and VPS encoder
- Create or schedule the broadcast: Open YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, and select the encoder workflow. Follow the stream setup screen to obtain the server URL and stream key.
- Select and configure the VPS: Choose the operating system and encoder workflow you can maintain. Check CPU, memory, disk space for source media, outbound capacity and monthly transfer terms against your real workload. A provider’s published plan specifications are seller claims, not a performance test.
- Install and test the encoder: Configure it to use YouTube’s URL and key, and set the codec, audio format, constant bitrate, resolution, frame rate and keyframe interval. Use representative moving video and audio in a test run. Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages before treating the setup as production.
- Keep credentials private: Treat the stream key like a password. Do not place it in public code, screenshots or logs. If it is exposed, reset it through YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Arrange recovery and monitoring: Decide how you will detect a stopped encoder or interrupted server and restart the process. Monitor both the server and YouTube stream health; an unattended process is not the same as a monitored service.
- Confirm billing details before checkout: Verify whether the selected provider accepts your intended prepaid payment method, whether renewal is automatic, and what taxes, renewal price, cancellation and refunds apply. These terms are provider- and plan-specific.
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. Its archive guidance warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local recording backup. If you need to retain the whole broadcast, do not rely on one continuous YouTube archive; plan a recording and storage workflow separately.

Estimate transfer before committing
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously, so a monthly cap or fair-use limit can matter more than a short speed test. As a rough planning calculation, multiply the total stream bitrate in megabits per second by 0.45 to estimate gigabytes transferred per hour using decimal units. At 10 Mbps total, that is about 4.5 GB an hour, or about 3.24 TB over 30 days of uninterrupted streaming. This is an estimate, not a provider measurement; add protocol overhead and allow for restarts, tests and other server traffic. If 10 Mbps refers only to video, include audio in the total bitrate before estimating.
Compare the estimate with the VPS plan’s stated monthly transfer, egress charges and fair-use conditions. If the plan says “unmetered,” read the applicable terms rather than assuming a particular sustained rate is permitted.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is running and that both the server URL and current stream key are entered correctly. Confirm that the VPS can make outbound connections and review the encoder’s error output and YouTube’s live-control-room status.
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: Check sustained outbound capacity, server network conditions and concurrent traffic. Reduce bitrate or output settings if needed, keeping YouTube’s recommended headroom rather than targeting the maximum measured speed.
- The VPS struggles during encoding: Check CPU and memory under the actual workload. If the source can be relayed in a compatible format, test that approach; otherwise choose a machine that can sustain the required encode and test it before relying on it.
- The stream stops after a server or process interruption: Inspect the encoder and server logs, restore the process and determine why it stopped. Configure a suitable restart mechanism and monitoring, then run another representative test; a restart cannot prevent every network or provider interruption.
- The full broadcast is missing from the archive: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Keep a local recording if the content must be preserved, and plan storage and file rotation for long-running recordings.
- The billed amount or renewal differs from expectation: Review the selected plan’s checkout summary and provider terms for tax, renewal, auto-renewal and cancellation. Do not assume a listing’s headline price is the final recurring total.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos or a playlist on YouTube Live without administering a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded video to YouTube. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, and the same features on every plan; billing duration is what changes. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. If that fits your workflow, start a free first day at StreamNeo registration.
