For a 24/7 YouTube playlist, start with OBS’s compatible hardware encoder if your computer has one, then test it against x264 using your actual playlist and stream settings. Hardware encoding shifts video encoding away from the CPU, which can leave more processor capacity for other work. It does not guarantee higher image quality or uninterrupted streaming: older hardware encoders may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate, and either option can fail if the whole system or network cannot sustain the workload.
Hardware encoding vs. x264: what changes?
OBS hardware encoding uses a dedicated encoder in compatible hardware; software encoding with x264 uses the CPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves the encoding workload off the main processor. That can be useful for an always-on stream, but encoding is only one part of the system’s workload.
| Decision point | Hardware encoder | x264 software encoder |
|---|---|---|
| Main resource | A specialized encoding component in compatible hardware; typically less encoding work for the CPU. | The CPU performs the encode; demanding settings can use substantial processor capacity. |
| Image quality at a constrained bitrate | Modern generations can produce strong results, but OBS warns that older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate. | OBS’s x264 guidance notes that it can provide better quality per bitrate in some cases, with greater real-time processing demands. |
| Compatibility | Depends on operating system, hardware family and encoder generation. OBS supports platform-specific options including NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV and Apple VideoToolbox. | x264 is included in OBS; whether the CPU can sustain the chosen settings depends on the system and workload. |
| 24/7 suitability | Lower CPU load may leave capacity for other work, but the encoder alone does not guarantee uptime. | Can work if the CPU sustains the chosen resolution, frame rate, scene and preset without overload. |
Neither the label “hardware” nor a CPU or GPU model name settles the choice. OBS cautions that requirements vary with encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity; basic system compatibility does not mean a machine can successfully stream at every setting. Compare options on the machine that will run the playlist.
How to choose for your playlist
- Try the encoder your computer already supports. In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the streaming encoder options. Available choices vary by operating system and hardware. Do not buy a GPU solely because the stream is continuous; first test the existing hardware encoder and x264.
- Choose a codec, resolution and frame rate that YouTube accepts and your connection can sustain. YouTube’s live encoder guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS. OBS only exposes options supported by your system, so choose an available codec and verify stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Use YouTube’s recommended transmission settings. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, output resolution and frame rate.
- Check whether your upload connection has headroom. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth capacity beyond the total stream bitrate, to allow for fluctuation and other network use. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee of a stable connection.
- Test the real workload before relying on it. Run the actual playlist, scene, output resolution and frame rate. Review OBS performance and YouTube stream-health messages; watch for encoder overload, dropped frames or connection interruptions. YouTube advises testing before going live.
For one concrete YouTube recommendation, its settings guide lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps using H.264. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular connection can sustain that bitrate. Check YouTube’s current table for the codec and output mode you plan to use: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Will hardware encoding keep the stream running all day?
No encoder type guarantees a 24/7 broadcast. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU load, but stability depends on the full setup: the encoder and its generation, OBS settings, playlist and scenes, computer, power, and network connection. x264 is a viable choice only if the CPU sustains the selected workload without overload. Validate the complete arrangement rather than inferring endurance from compatibility.

Plan the archive separately from the live stream
A continuous broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube VOD. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full playlist broadcast matters, arrange and test a local recording or another preservation workflow. Monitor the local recording file to confirm it continues to grow; live delivery and archive capture are separate jobs.
YouTube’s guidance and local-backup recommendation are on its Archive live streams page. If you need a full archive, test your chosen workflow rather than assuming one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will produce a complete VOD.

Troubleshooting a long-running OBS stream
- OBS reports encoding overload: test the compatible hardware encoder instead of x264, or reduce the workload by lowering resolution or frame rate. Re-test with the full playlist and scene; basic compatibility alone does not establish sufficient performance.
- Image quality is poor at the chosen bitrate: compare the available hardware generation with x264 under the same output conditions. Older hardware encoders can produce lower quality than x264 veryfast at the same bitrate. Also check that the bitrate is appropriate for the chosen codec and output mode in YouTube’s settings guide.
- The stream disconnects or shows network health warnings: verify upload reliability and leave the recommended 20% headroom beyond total stream bitrate. Test the connection and review YouTube’s stream-health messages; a correct encoder configuration cannot resolve an unstable connection.
- The YouTube archive is incomplete or missing: if the broadcast lasted more than 12 hours, YouTube may not capture it at all. Use a tested local recording or other archive plan when the complete recording matters, and check that the recording file is growing.
- The option you expect is missing in OBS: hardware encoder availability depends on the operating system, hardware family and generation. Use an encoder actually exposed by OBS on that machine, or x264 if the CPU can sustain the selected settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the playlist live without keeping OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
