Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUse systemd to keep a foreground FFmpeg process supervised, journalctl to inspect its output, and YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that YouTube is actually receiving the stream. These are three separate checks: a service can be active on your Linux host while the stream is missing or unhealthy at YouTube.
What you need to monitor
FFmpeg reads a media input and writes to an output URL. systemd can manage the FFmpeg process and record its output in the system journal; it cannot confirm that YouTube accepted the stream. Use all three checks below when diagnosing a broadcast:
- Service state: Is the systemd unit active, failed, or restarting?
- Local logs: What did FFmpeg print before or during the problem?
- Remote ingest: Does YouTube Live Control Room show the expected stream and health?
Do not treat an active unit or a running FFmpeg process as proof of a working broadcast.
Get the current YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the RTMPS ingest URL and the stream key for the stream you are configuring. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. The displayed URL and key belong to your current configuration; do not assume a fixed endpoint or copy a key from an old example. YouTube’s guidance explains how to reveal or select RTMPS if the interface initially shows RTMP: YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the key out of public unit files, screenshots, logs, and source control. Restrict access to credentials according to your host’s security policy. An environment file is not inherently secret simply because it is separate from the service file.
RTMP or RTMPS?
Use the protocol available and supported by your encoder and current Live Control Room configuration. YouTube documents RTMPS as the encrypted RTMP option. Confirm the exact URL and key in the control room rather than assuming the two protocols share an endpoint. The YouTube Live API documentation describes primary and backup RTMPS ingest addresses and notes that encoder interfaces may accept a URL and stream name separately or combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME: YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
Run FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd can supervise its process. The example below is a template, not a complete command for every source: replace the input and output with the actual media path and current YouTube ingest details, and add the encoding options appropriate to your video and audio. Do not put a real stream key in a shared example or commit it to source control.

Choose restart behavior deliberately
Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart the service after qualifying abnormal exits, kills, or timeouts. RestartSec=5 sets a five-second wait before a restart attempt in this example; choose a delay suited to your host and workload. A manager-requested stop does not trigger the same automatic restart behavior. Check the installed systemd manual for exact semantics on your system.
A restart policy helps with process failures; it does not fix a bad key, unreadable input, network outage, invalid FFmpeg arguments, or a YouTube ingest rejection. Before increasing retries or delay, inspect the first FFmpeg error. Repeated restarts can otherwise keep repeating a persistent configuration problem.

sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service
Check whether the service is active, failed, or entering a restart loop. The state describes the local service, not YouTube’s receipt of the broadcast.
Read recent FFmpeg output
To show the latest 100 journal entries associated with the unit without opening a pager:
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager
To follow new entries as they arrive:
sudo journalctl -f -u ffmpeg-youtube.service
-u filters entries for the named unit, and -f follows new journal entries live. For time- or boot-specific filtering, consult the options supported by your host’s installed journalctl; the cited manual is for systemd 255, and distributions may ship another version: journalctl manual.

Verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room
Open the broadcast in Live Control Room and check that YouTube shows the incoming stream and the expected preview or health indicators. If FFmpeg remains active but YouTube shows no incoming video or an unhealthy stream, compare the remote view with the local logs. Check input readability, FFmpeg’s output and exit behavior, the current destination protocol and URL, the stream key, encoder compatibility, and the broadcast’s state in the control room.
YouTube’s ingest interface and systemd’s service state answer different questions. A clean local status cannot establish that the URL and key were accepted or that video reached YouTube; a local journal alone cannot establish a YouTube-side fault.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Unit fails immediately | systemctl status and the first error in journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. |
Correct the command, executable path, input path, or permissions indicated by the error before changing restart settings. |
| Service repeatedly restarts | Whether FFmpeg exits with the same error on each attempt, and the configured Restart= and RestartSec=. |
Fix the underlying input, configuration, or network issue; use an operationally appropriate restart policy and delay. |
| Service is active but YouTube has no preview | Live Control Room plus FFmpeg output, input readability, output URL and protocol, key, and encoder compatibility. | Verify the current URL and key in Live Control Room, then correct the local command or input as indicated. |
| Stream stopped after an intentional service stop | Whether the unit was deliberately stopped by an operator or manager. | Start it again when appropriate. A configured automatic restart policy is not a substitute for a requested stop. |
| Journal appears to lack older entries | The host’s journal retention and the time or boot range being queried. | Use the local journalctl manual to select the relevant time or boot and check what entries the host retained. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than operating FFmpeg on your own host, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at the quality you made it, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
