The monster, the body part you hit, your weapon type, and the attacks you use all affect whether that element is useful.
What elemental damage means
A weapon attack can contribute physical (raw) damage and elemental damage. Elemental damage is associated with the weapon’s listed element and depends on the monster matchup; it is not a separate attack that always adds the same amount to every hit. The independent Wilds Field Guide’s explanation of sharpness, affinity, element, and status describes the mechanic conceptually, but does not establish a current numeric formula. Exact divisors, multipliers, and attack motion values should not be inferred from a displayed weapon stat.
Why the target and hit location matter
Element effectiveness varies by monster and by the part receiving the hit. A weapon with a high displayed element is not automatically a strong choice if the monster or the part you can reliably reach is a poor matchup. Conversely, choosing an element that suits the target and focusing attacks on a more receptive part can make that weapon a better practical fit.
The available guide supports this matchup-based approach, but does not provide current, attributed hit-zone values. Use the in-game information available for your hunt rather than treating an unsourced chart or a remembered value as definitive.

Why weapon type and attacks matter
Do not compare displayed element numbers across different weapon types as though every attack applies them identically. Weapon behavior and attack selection matter: the moves you actually land determine how a weapon contributes damage over a hunt. A comparison is more useful when it considers the weapon type, the attacks you expect to use, the target part you can reach, and the elemental matchup together.
How to compare elemental weapons for a hunt
- Identify the target and reachable parts. Consider the monster you are fighting and the body parts you can hit consistently, not just the element printed on the weapon.
- Compare weapons within their intended use. Account for weapon type and the attacks you plan to use; displayed element values alone are not a cross-weapon ranking.
- Check whether your build supports the plan. Consider affinity and any skills that actually complement your elemental or critical-hit approach. Critical Element, for example, only boosts elemental damage on critical hits.
- Account for practical consistency. Sharpening needs, whether your critical-hit conditions are met, and access to the desired hit zone all affect how dependable the setup is.
- Consider switching during the hunt. Wilds lets hunters bring two weapons and switch between them. In developer tips published by Xbox Wire on February 28, 2025, carrying the same weapon type with different elemental properties is suggested as one possible strategy. Treat this as tactical advice, not a claim about current balance values.
What Critical Element does
Critical Element is listed with three levels. Its skill description says that it increases fire, water, thunder, ice, and dragon elemental damage when an attack lands as a critical hit. The available listing establishes the condition and effect category, but not a supported current multiplier; do not assign it a percentage based on that description alone. The details are recorded by the community-maintained Incusor Critical Element skill listing, rather than official Capcom documentation, so check the in-game description for current wording.
Element is not the same as status
Elemental damage and status effects are different categories. The independent guide describes poison, paralysis, and sleep as effects that build toward a trigger. That is distinct from direct elemental damage, so a weapon’s status should not be read as another elemental damage type.

There is no supported current numeric formula, complete current hit-zone table, or universal raw-versus-element ranking established here. Older patch-era tests or unattributed values should not be presented as current. The practical conclusion is narrower: evaluate a weapon in the context of its target, hit locations, weapon type, attacks, and build rather than choosing by element number alone.
