FFmpeg YouTube Live Stream Is Blurry: Bitrate and Scaling Fixes

Blurry YouTube Live output can come from bitrate, dimensions, frame rate, encoder settings, or delivery. Check the actual encoded stream and test changes systematically.

If your FFmpeg YouTube Live stream looks blurry, first check the bitrate against your actual output resolution, frame rate, and ingestion codec; then confirm the source and encoded dimensions, upload capacity, and YouTube stream health. There is no single proven cause without your command, input details, encoder, and Live Control Room report. The settings below provide a practical way to isolate it.

1. Check what FFmpeg is actually sending

Before changing bitrate or a scale filter, record the input’s width, height, frame rate, pixel format, and the encoder implementation in your command. Then verify the encoded output’s dimensions and frame rate from FFmpeg’s logs or output metadata. A command can contain a scale option yet produce dimensions different from what you expect, so check the result rather than infer it from the command.

Do not enlarge a small source in expectation of recovering detail that was never captured. If the source is larger than the intended output, downscaling can reduce the spatial detail the encoder must represent. Preserve the source aspect ratio when choosing output dimensions.

2. Choose a bitrate for the actual stream mode

YouTube’s live encoder guide recommends selecting bitrate according to ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its current guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, gives these figures. They are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of a particular picture quality.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
H.264 output mode YouTube minimum YouTube recommended

720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Use the row for the output you are actually encoding, not merely the source file’s resolution. YouTube’s recommendations differ for other codecs, so consult its live encoder settings and bitrate table if your ingestion codec is H.265 or AV1. The guide lists RTMP and RTMPS, recommends RTMPS, supports video frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends CBR.

3. Set FFmpeg rate control and keyframes carefully

FFmpeg’s generic -b:v option specifies a video bitrate in bits per second. A target bitrate option by itself does not prove that every encoder is operating in constant-bitrate mode. The exact rate-control flags depend on whether you use libx264, NVENC, QSV, AMF, or another encoder. Check the relevant encoder’s options in the FFmpeg codecs documentation and configure its CBR mode as intended.

FFmpeg also distinguishes target bitrate from -maxrate and -bufsize; its documentation specifies that -maxrate requires -bufsize. Do not treat these controls as interchangeable. See the FFmpeg documentation and your encoder-specific rate-control instructions before changing them.

YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of two seconds and says it should not exceed four seconds. FFmpeg’s -g is a GOP length in frames, not seconds: for a two-second interval, use a GOP count equivalent to two seconds at the output frame rate—60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps. Check how your selected encoder applies GOP settings.

4. Check scaling without assuming the filter is the culprit

Set output width and height deliberately and confirm that the filter produces those dimensions. A scaling filter changes dimensions; it cannot add detail absent from the source. The available evidence does not establish that lanczos, bicubic, bilinear, or another scaler is universally sharpest for YouTube Live, or that any one filter cures blur.

If the image remains soft after checking dimensions and bitrate, compare candidate filters on the same representative source frames at the same output size. Inspect both fine detail and motion, and change only the filter for that comparison.

5. Test the connection and inspect YouTube’s health report

  1. Run an upload-speed test and confirm the connection can sustain the chosen stream bitrate, with room for audio and network variation. A result at the target with no margin is not a reliable live-stream plan.
  2. Before going live publicly, test with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. YouTube specifically advises representative movement and audio rather than a static or silent test.
  3. Watch the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room during the test. Use them alongside FFmpeg output and connection checks; ingest blur alone does not identify scaling as the cause.
  4. If the cause is still unclear, compare a short local encode with the live output and change one variable at a time: output dimensions, bitrate, frame rate, rate control, then scaling filter.

YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That viewer-side transcoding does not remove the need to send a suitable, stable ingest stream.

Common causes and fixes

  • Bitrate copied from a different mode: Match the recommendation to the ingestion codec, output resolution, and frame rate; the H.264 figures above are not universal across codecs.
  • Unexpectedly small output: Inspect encoded dimensions and frame rate, then correct the filter or output settings. Do not rely on the source file’s properties to describe the outgoing stream.
  • Low-resolution source enlarged: Output at a sensible size for the source; upscaling does not restore lost detail.
  • Unintended low input frame rate: Confirm the input and output frame rates. A later output-rate option cannot recreate motion that was not captured; avoid duplicate or conflicting frame-rate settings.
  • Rate control is not what you intended: Verify the selected encoder’s CBR and buffer options rather than assuming -b:v alone enforces CBR.
  • Connection cannot sustain the stream: Lower the output mode or bitrate to a recommendation the connection can reliably support, then test again.
  • Only filter changes seem to help: Compare filters on identical frames after verifying bitrate, dimensions, encoder behavior, connection, and YouTube health messages. No specific filter is an established universal fix.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7 rather than diagnose an FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video to YouTube, not camera streaming. Start the free first day.
