Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To expand storage for a 24/7 stream, enlarge the cloud provider’s disk, then make sure the server’s operating system and filesystem can use the new capacity. Those are separate steps: a bigger disk in the cloud console does not always mean more usable space inside the VM. Back up or snapshot the disk first, and check whether you need more capacity or better storage performance before resizing.
First identify what is running out
Check filesystem capacity separately from the attached disk and its performance metrics. On Linux, df -h shows filesystem usage; it does not by itself tell you whether the underlying disk is too slow or whether another storage layer is the constraint. Note whether the stream writes a growing recording or cache, reads media from that same volume, or uses another storage service. Storage need depends on the workload; there is no universal disk size for 24/7 streaming.
- Capacity: The filesystem is running out of free space as recordings, media, or cache accumulate.
- Throughput, IOPS, or latency: The workload needs faster or more consistent storage. A larger disk may not solve this.
- Sharing or retention: Multiple machines need file access, or media is better retained as objects than on a VM-mounted disk.
Storage models have different interfaces and scaling behavior. Block storage presents a disk-like device; managed file storage is for shared file access; object storage is accessed through object IDs and APIs. Moving from a block device to file or object storage may require application changes, rather than just a resize. Google Cloud’s storage strategy guide describes these distinctions.
Choose the right storage before expanding
For data that must survive VM stops, restarts, crashes, or failures, choose durable storage. Google Cloud identifies Persistent Disk and Hyperdisk as durable options; its Local SSD is temporary, so use it only for data that can safely be regenerated, such as scratch files or a cache.

Capacity and performance do not scale the same way on every product. Google Cloud says Persistent Disk performance depends on provisioned capacity, while Hyperdisk performance can be configured independently of capacity. Actual types, performance limits, and availability depend on the VM series and disk type. Do not assume that adding capacity will improve streaming performance, or that disk specifications establish a particular stream quality or audience capacity. See Google Cloud’s disk type guidance.
Safe workflow for expanding a cloud disk
- Inventory the setup. Identify your cloud provider, VM, disk name and type, zone or region, current and intended capacity, operating system, partition table, filesystem, and whether the disk is a boot or data disk. Check provider and VM attachment limits before settling on a target.
- Make a recoverable backup. Confirm that a snapshot, backup, or other recovery path exists and that you know how to restore it. Google recommends taking a disk snapshot before partition or filesystem changes. Its documentation says increasing Persistent Disk size does not itself delete or modify disk data, but that is not a substitute for a backup.
- Enlarge the provider-managed disk. Use your provider’s console, CLI, API, or infrastructure-as-code workflow and follow its current instructions for that disk type. For Google Persistent Disk, enlargement is supported whether or not the disk is attached to a running VM, but the disk cannot later be reduced. Do not assume another provider or disk type has the same online behavior.
- Make the guest OS use the space. Inspect whether the operating system has recognized the new device size. If the partition, logical volume, or filesystem has not grown automatically, follow instructions for your OS, partition layout, and filesystem to expand the relevant layer. Google Cloud says most boot disks automatically resize the root filesystem, but some images and resized data disks need manual steps. On Azure Windows VMs, disk enlargement and Windows volume growth are separate actions. IBM’s Classic block-storage instructions call for a host rescan followed by partition and filesystem resizing.
- Verify both layers. Confirm that the provider reports the new disk size and that the guest reports the expected filesystem capacity and free space. On Linux, check again with
df -h. Then observe the streaming process and storage metrics in your own environment; vendor resizing documentation is not a test of your workload. - Review the bill and limits. Check the recurring cost and confirm the selected performance tier still fits. IBM’s Classic block-volume documentation says expansion is prorated and that allocated capacity cannot be reduced afterward; billing details vary by provider and product.
For provider-specific instructions, use the current official documentation: Google Cloud Persistent Disk resizing, Azure Windows VM disk expansion, and IBM Classic block storage expansion.

Limits and exceptions to check
Google Cloud Persistent Disk
Google Cloud’s Persistent Disk documentation, accessed in 2026, lists up to 64 TiB per volume and, for most VMs, up to 128 volumes and 257 TiB of total attached capacity. Shared-core machine types have lower limits: 16 Persistent Disk volumes and 3 TiB total Persistent Disk capacity. These are Google-specific limits, not general cloud-server limits; check current specifications for your VM and disk type. Google’s guidance is explicit: “You can’t reduce the size of a disk.”
Azure Windows OS disks
Microsoft Learn’s Windows VM expansion guidance, accessed in 2026, lists a maximum OS disk capacity of 4,095 GiB, while MBR partitioning limits usable capacity to 2 TiB. The guide recommends data disks for needs above that threshold unless the OS disk is converted to GPT. Online expansion support also varies with disk type, size, VM, and operation. These figures and instructions apply to the Windows guidance cited, not to every Azure disk or Linux configuration.

Storage Spaces Direct and temporary disks
Google Cloud warns that Storage Spaces Direct does not recognize space added by resizing underlying Persistent Disks and that data could become inaccessible; its prescribed direction is to add servers or drives instead. Identify this topology before resizing. Local SSD is also not a safe location for recordings or other data that must persist through VM lifecycle events.
Troubleshoot after the resize
- The console shows a larger disk, but free filesystem space is unchanged: The provider-side disk may be enlarged while the guest partition or filesystem remains at its former size. Inspect the device, partition, and filesystem separately, then follow the provider and OS-specific expansion steps.
- The resize operation is unavailable or fails: Check the disk type, VM series, attachment state, operation-specific restrictions, and provider limits. Do not assume every volume can be expanded online.
- The filesystem is larger, but the stream still has storage problems: Capacity may not be the bottleneck. Review throughput, IOPS, latency, VM limits, and whether the application is reading or writing through the expected storage layer.
- A shared-storage setup does not see the added capacity: Check whether the system uses Storage Spaces Direct or another layer that manages capacity independently; a provider-level resize may not be supported by that layer.
- You need to shrink after expanding: Do not plan on reversing the change by reducing the provider disk size. Restore or migrate to a newly provisioned disk only after checking the provider’s supported procedure and validating your backup.
Or let it run in the cloud
