Yes—Restreamer can publish a continuous video source to YouTube, so it can carry a radio stream whose video is a static image. The important distinction is that the current Restreamer documentation describes publishing a video source; it does not establish that Restreamer itself creates a still-image-and-audio feed or loops it indefinitely. You need a continuous encoded source, then configure Restreamer to send it to YouTube.
What Restreamer does—and what it does not establish
datarhei’s current guide says that “any video source can be sent to YouTube” through Restreamer’s Publication Service. That supports using Restreamer as the publishing link for a radio channel presented with a still image, provided the incoming source already contains both the image video and the radio audio. Read datarhei’s YouTube publication guide.
The guide does not document a current built-in control that turns an image and audio file into a continuous stream or loops them indefinitely. The project describes broader video and audio inputs, outputs, and FFmpeg processing, but that does not verify a one-click static-image radio feature. See the Restreamer project repository. Plan to generate the continuous image-plus-audio source with an encoder or media workflow suited to your setup, and confirm that workflow against the Restreamer release you are running.
What you need for a 24/7 broadcast
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take at least 24 hours after the request. Check YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- A continuous encoded source carrying the radio audio and the static-image video.
- A Restreamer installation that can receive that source and remain running.
- A stable power and network connection, with enough upload capacity for the selected encoding settings.
- Your YouTube streaming ID (stream key), entered as the publication destination in Restreamer.
A 24/7 channel depends on the whole chain: source generation, the machine running the pipeline, power, internet, and YouTube’s reception. YouTube recommends estimating bitrate needs, checking real-world bandwidth, and monitoring stream health; the required throughput depends on your chosen encoding settings and destination. Set up Restreamer to publish the source
- Enable YouTube live streaming first. Verify the channel and request live access in YouTube Studio. Allow at least 24 hours for first-time enablement, as YouTube advises.
- Prepare the image-and-audio source. Use your chosen encoder or media process to combine the still image with the radio audio and keep the source continuous. The exact commands and controls depend on that workflow; the current Restreamer guide does not prescribe a still-image composition or looping procedure.
- Connect the source to Restreamer. Configure your installation to receive the continuous source using the input method appropriate to your setup and release. Restreamer is self-hosted software, so the host and its resources are part of your operating setup.
- Add the YouTube destination. In Restreamer, open Publication Service, select YouTube, enter a valid YouTube streaming ID, and save the configuration.
- Confirm the connection and monitor it. Check Restreamer’s connection status and bitrate, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. Do not assume that a saved destination alone proves the source is being received reliably.
- Test recovery and shutdown behavior. Observe how your source process and host behave after a network or process interruption. The reviewed documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime or a particular recovery behavior for every self-hosted configuration.
Keep the live broadcast, host uptime, and archive separate
A live stream that remains available is not automatically the same thing as a recording that will be available later. Restreamer’s guide warns that interrupting Restreamer before ending the broadcast on YouTube may affect whether YouTube saves the stream in its DVR archive. For an intentional shutdown, end the broadcast on YouTube first, then stop the publishing process.
Restream, a separate relay service, says YouTube archives streams shorter than 12 hours and notes that Restream’s own servers may undergo maintenance and restart on runs beyond 24 hours. That service-specific maintenance caveat does not establish a 24-hour limit for self-hosted datarhei Restreamer. Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not accept the broadcast: confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that you used the correct streaming ID.
- The stream connects but has no image or audio: inspect the incoming source before troubleshooting publication. It must contain the static-image video and radio audio as a continuous encoded feed.
- The broadcast disconnects or becomes unstable: check the source process, host power, network connection, available upload capacity, and YouTube stream-health information. A 24/7 setup has no single point of reliability if any part of this chain fails.
- The archive is missing or incomplete after stopping: check whether the broadcast was ended on YouTube before Restreamer was interrupted. The Restreamer guide specifically flags this shutdown order as relevant to DVR saving.
- An older tutorial’s controls do not match: datarhei’s legacy YouTube guide is marked deprecated and covers Restreamer 0.6.x. Do not treat its interface steps as current instructions. View the deprecated 0.6.x guide.
