To update a current Restreamer v2 Docker installation while preserving its YouTube stream settings, back up its configuration, pull the new image, and recreate or restart the container with the same host-mounted paths—especially the mount targeting /core/config. Then open Restreamer and verify the YouTube destination and stream settings before broadcasting. Persistent mounts preserve application state, but Restreamer’s documentation does not guarantee that every YouTube credential or setting survives every upgrade path.
Before updating, identify your installation
The safe update path depends on whether you already run Restreamer v2 or are migrating from the older v0.6.x series. Check the installed version and retain the exact Docker command or Compose configuration you used. Note the image variant, ports, environment variables, and host paths; those details may be installation-specific.
- Current v2 installation: follow the image-pull and restart process, keeping the existing persistent mounts.
- v0.6.x installation: use the migration process, including the required v0.6.8 bridge. Do not apply the short v2 update steps directly.
Restreamer’s Update documentation recommends using the latest datarhei Restreamer and describes the v2 image update. The Migration guide covers older installations and downgrade limitations.
Update a current Restreamer v2 Docker installation
1. Record the current Docker setup
Save the actual Docker run command or Compose file before changing anything. Confirm which host directories map to the container’s persistent paths. The current Docker documentation identifies /core/config for configuration and state and /core/data for persistent internal files. Your host-side paths can differ, so preserve the paths your deployment already uses.

2. Back up the configuration
Before replacing the container, make a separate copy of the host directory mounted to /core/config. Consider backing up the host directory mounted to /core/data as well. In Restreamer’s expert system settings, you can also export the database. Treat the export or file copy as a precaution, not as a substitute for retaining the correct Docker mounts.

Restreamer documents database export in its system settings manual. An external drive can be a destination for a separate backup, but it is optional; the important point is to preserve the configuration and mount mapping.
3. Pull the image and restart with the same settings
- Pull the current Restreamer Docker image, as directed by the update instructions.
- Recreate or restart the container using your saved Docker configuration. Keep the same ports, environment variables, and image variant where applicable.
- Keep the existing host directories mounted to
/core/configand/core/data. Do not accidentally point the replacement container at empty or different host directories.
If your installation uses a variant such as a CUDA image, retain that choice rather than replacing it with a generic image command. Restreamer’s Docker documentation describes the documented container setup; use the values from your own deployment when recreating it.

4. Check Restreamer and YouTube before going live
After the container starts, open Restreamer and confirm that the saved stream and destination configuration is present. Check the YouTube destination and stream settings in Restreamer before starting your next broadcast. Restreamer’s stream settings manual explains the stream configuration area. The cited documentation does not promise that every YouTube destination credential or setting will be retained across every version transition and installation method.
Migrate an older v0.6.x installation to v2
An older installation needs a migration, not just a routine v2 image update. Restreamer’s migration guide says to upgrade through v0.6.8 first; it warns that skipping that bridge may result in lost settings.

- Upgrade the existing v0.6.x installation to v0.6.8 and start it. The guide says to stream from the video source during this stage.
- Stop and remove the v0.6.8 container after that step.
- Pull the v2 image.
- Update the configuration mount from the old container path
/restreamer/dbto/core/config. The guide’s example maps/mnt/restreamer/dbto/core/config. - Add the persistent data mount to
/core/data. The guide’s example uses/opt/restreamer/dataon the host. - Start v2 with the adjusted mounts and verify the imported configuration, including the YouTube destination, before going live.
The example host paths are not universal; adapt them to the directories used by your deployment. The guide says v2 creates a new db.json and config.json in the mounted configuration directory after import. It also says legacy RS_ environment values are transferred on the first v2 startup and may then be removed. Check the migration instructions against your installed version and actual container configuration rather than copying sample commands without adjustment.
What can cause settings to disappear?
- The configuration mount was omitted or changed: the replacement container may start without the previous state if the host directory mounted to
/core/configis missing or different. - The update was treated as a migration—or vice versa: v0.6.x installations need the documented v0.6.8 migration route, while a current v2 installation uses its existing v2 mounts.
- The image or Docker settings changed unintentionally: replacing the image variant, ports, environment, or mount paths with generic values can change how the container runs.
- A YouTube destination needs attention after the update: the documentation does not establish universal retention of every destination credential or setting, so inspect the destination in Restreamer before broadcasting.
Downgrade limitations
Do not treat rollback as a guaranteed way to recover every installation. Restreamer’s migration guide says that, from version 2.4.0 onward, FFmpeg 5.1.2 is incompatible with earlier versions. It describes a limited downgrade route to version 2.3.x or earlier, involving database-file changes, and warns that processes created with 2.4.0 or newer cannot be restored by that route. Consult the guide for the specific version path before attempting a downgrade.
