24/7 streaming

SRS HLS vs. RTMP for a 24/7 YouTube Playlist Stream

For an SRS playlist sent to YouTube, RTMPS is usually the simpler default. Learn when HLS ingest is worth its extra format, segment, and playlist requirements—and what 24/7 operation actually requires.

For a playlist stream sent from SRS to YouTube, RTMPS is usually the practical default. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder-based streaming, and SRS documents RTMP as a common ingest and production path. Choose HLS ingest only when its codec or quality support meets a specific need and you can meet its stricter playlist, segment, and HTTPS requirements. First, distinguish sending a stream to YouTube from using SRS to generate HLS for viewers: those are different workflows.

First decide which direction the video is travelling

“SRS HLS” can describe SRS generating an HLS playlist and media segments from an incoming stream so viewers can watch it. That is HLS delivery from SRS. HLS ingest to YouTube is different: the encoder must upload a compliant media playlist and segments to YouTube over HTTPS. An SRS-generated viewer-facing .m3u8 is not automatically a valid YouTube ingest feed. See SRS’s HLS documentation and YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.

This comparison is about the path from your encoder or playlist system to YouTube. It does not compare how viewers receive the stream after YouTube processes it.

RTMPS vs. HLS ingest at a glance

Factor RTMPS/RTMP ingest HLS ingest
Best fit Default encoder-to-YouTube path when supported; prefer RTMPS. A specific HLS codec or quality need justifies its additional constraints.
Connection and setup Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP; that is a recommendation, not a claim that plain RTMP is impossible. Upload a compliant media playlist and M2TS segments over HTTPS, following YouTube’s sequence and outstanding-segment rules.
Formats YouTube’s encoder recommendations include H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, muxed M2TS, closed GOP, and a rolling media playlist; no master playlist for ingestion.
Latency considerations YouTube describes HLS ingest as usually higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingest. That does not establish a specific end-to-end delay for an individual stream. Segment-based delivery usually has higher latency. Shorter segments may reduce it, but can increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency.
Operational burden A familiar encoder path; check stream health and reconnect behavior for a continuous playlist. Additional requirements for HTTPS uploads, segment duration, playlist format, sequencing, and outstanding segments.

The format and encoder recommendations are from YouTube’s encoder settings guide and its HLS ingestion guide. For HLS, YouTube recommends media segments of one to four seconds and sets a five-second maximum. The media playlist may contain no more than five outstanding segments. The ingestion guide supports up to 60 fps.

Why RTMPS is usually the simpler choice for a 24/7 playlist

In YouTube’s ordinary encoder workflow, you supply a server URL and stream key. With an encoder that supports it, RTMPS follows YouTube’s recommendation without requiring you to implement an HLS segment uploader and rolling playlist. SRS documents RTMP as a common production/ingest protocol. For a playlist that should keep sending the same continuous stream, this is generally the more direct starting point.

RTMPS does not remove the need to manage the encoder or the source playlist. Keep the playlist’s input formats and timestamps consistent, monitor YouTube’s stream health and warnings, and decide how the encoder or hosting environment should recover after a connection drop. YouTube advises testing beforehand with audio and motion similar to the planned content, then monitoring stream health during the broadcast. The documentation does not establish that any particular playlist setup will remain uninterrupted for 24 hours or longer.

When HLS ingest makes sense—and what it requires

Use HLS ingest if you have a concrete HLS-specific codec or quality requirement and your encoder can produce YouTube-compliant uploads. YouTube says its HLS ingest path accepts H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio in muxed M2TS segments. It requires a closed GOP and a rolling media playlist; the ingest guide does not use a master playlist with multiple variants. YouTube transcodes for viewer resolutions, so the encoder sends one stream at its highest desired resolution.

HLS requirements to check before choosing it

  • Upload the media playlist and segments over HTTPS; follow YouTube’s playlist sequence and outstanding-segment rules.
  • Use muxed M2TS segments with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, and a closed GOP.
  • Keep each media segment within YouTube’s recommended one-to-four-second range where possible; never exceed five seconds.
  • Keep the playlist rolling and at five or fewer outstanding segments.
  • Account for the latency trade-off: YouTube says HLS ingest usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC ingest. Smaller segments may reduce delay but can increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency.

These are YouTube HLS ingest requirements and guidance, not settings for SRS’s viewer-facing HLS output. YouTube’s exact technical details are in its HLS ingestion guide.

Do not copy SRS delivery tuning into YouTube ingest settings

SRS’s HLS documentation shows output configuration such as hls_fragment and hls_window. Its example uses two-second fragments and a ten-second window; its tuning guidance describes roughly six-to-eight seconds as achievable with reduced GOP, fragment, and window settings, while warning that too little buffering can cause playback failures. Those figures describe SRS HLS delivery tuning, not a guarantee for YouTube HLS ingest or end-to-end viewer latency. YouTube’s ingest requirements for M2TS segments, HTTPS uploads, and a rolling playlist still apply.

SRS also says its documented HLS path does not currently support adaptive-bitrate HLS generation. That is distinct from YouTube’s own transcoding for viewers; the YouTube HLS ingest guide calls for a single encoded input at the highest desired resolution rather than a master playlist of variants. Check the current SRS v8 HLS documentation against the SRS version you deploy.

Set up the continuous stream and verify it

  1. Choose the ingest protocol. In your encoder or SRS publishing workflow, choose RTMPS when supported for the usual YouTube encoder path. Choose HLS only if you can satisfy YouTube’s HLS ingest format and upload rules.
  2. Prepare the YouTube stream. In YouTube’s encoder setup, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential and do not share it publicly. Follow YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and go-live flow where applicable. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Test a representative loop. Before relying on the playlist, test with similar motion and audio. Check that transitions between files do not disrupt playback or produce inconsistent formats or timestamps, then confirm that YouTube receives the stream and review its health and warning messages.
  4. Plan for interruption. Decide how your encoder or hosting environment detects a failed connection and restarts or reconnects. Monitor the stream rather than treating a successful initial connection as proof of continuous operation.

What “24/7” does—and does not—mean on YouTube

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an archive rule, not a guarantee that a single broadcast will stay live indefinitely, that a longer stream will be archived, or that the encoder and connection will achieve uninterrupted 24/7 operation. For a channel that needs continuous output, make recovery and monitoring part of the operating plan rather than inferring a reliability guarantee from the protocol. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the server URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm you selected the intended ingest path, and review the encoder and Live Control Room status.
  • HLS upload is rejected or fails to play: Check that the encoder is uploading over HTTPS, using muxed M2TS with supported video and audio codecs, a closed GOP, and a rolling media playlist. Confirm segments do not exceed five seconds and there are no more than five outstanding segments.
  • HLS playback buffers or has more delay than expected: HLS is segment-based and YouTube says its ingest usually has higher latency than RTMP/WebRTC. Shortening segments can reduce delay but may increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency; do not assume SRS delivery tuning determines YouTube ingest latency.
  • The loop breaks at a file change: Check input formats and timestamps at playlist transitions, then test with representative audio and motion as YouTube recommends. The documentation cited here does not guarantee that a particular mixed-file playlist will transition cleanly.
  • The stream drops after starting successfully: Review encoder connection status and YouTube stream-health warnings, and verify your chosen process supervision or reconnection behavior. The protocol choice alone does not establish 24/7 reliability.

Running the encoder locally or on a server

You do not need a dedicated encoder appliance based on the cited SRS documentation. SRS’s project README shows an FFmpeg publishing workflow and lists Linux and macOS support, so a suitable existing machine can host software. A mini PC is an optional way to dedicate local hardware, not a requirement. A VPS or dedicated server is another category of option if you do not want a home computer running; provider suitability and pricing depend on your workload and are not established here. See the SRS project README.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube playlist live without leaving an encoder computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, support, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.

StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. If you need five or more slots, contact StreamNeo support. See StreamNeo pricing for available billing lengths and details. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.

Copyright and monetization still matter

A protocol does not grant permission to broadcast the videos or music in a playlist. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the material, and review YouTube’s applicable policies before streaming. Repeated or continuous playback does not, by itself, establish that content is eligible for monetization. For a practical pre-stream check, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
