NGINX RTMP vs OBS: Looping Prerecorded Videos on YouTube Live

OBS is usually the direct route from a prerecorded video to YouTube Live; add NGINX RTMP only when you need a self-managed relay or server-side routing.

For one prerecorded video going straight from your computer to YouTube Live, start with OBS. OBS handles the video source, scene and encoding; NGINX RTMP is a server layer for receiving or relaying a stream. Add NGINX only when you specifically need a self-managed relay or server-side routing. Neither setup alone guarantees an unattended, uninterrupted loop.

What is the difference between OBS and NGINX RTMP?

Factor OBS-first setup NGINX RTMP in the pipeline
Primary role Desktop application for sources, scenes, encoding and sending a stream. Server software for receiving, relaying or distributing RTMP streams.
Best fit A creator wants to stream a local video directly to YouTube. An operator needs a self-managed relay, routing or server-side streaming behavior.
Setup work Configure the YouTube destination, a media source, output settings and the host computer. Install and configure NGINX and its RTMP module, then operate the server and its network path. Deployment varies.
Automation OBS has a documented launch option to start streaming; scheduling and recovery require separate setup. The server can be run continuously, but deployment and failure recovery remain the operator’s responsibility.
Operational trade-off Fewer components for a direct file-to-YouTube workflow. More control over routing, but an additional configured component to secure, monitor and troubleshoot.

These are different layers, not interchangeable apps. A common NGINX arrangement is encoder → NGINX RTMP server → YouTube. If your only goal is sending one video file from one machine to YouTube, the server layer is usually unnecessary. OBS documents service and custom-server configuration in its overview guide; the NGINX RTMP module project documents the server-side component.

How to loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live with OBS

OBS is the simpler starting point for a local video-to-YouTube workflow. You configure YouTube’s live event, add the video as a source in OBS, choose output settings appropriate to your setup, and test before relying on the stream.

  1. Configure the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and follow YouTube’s current encoder-based setup. Copy the stream key from the event’s encoder settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder for the platform workflow and current account requirements.
  2. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if you are using the available service integration, then enter or select the appropriate stream key. If your setup requires a custom destination, choose the custom service/server option and use the server details supplied by the destination. Keep the key private.
  3. Add the prerecorded video. In the OBS main window, select a scene or create one, then add a Media Source in the Sources panel and choose the video file. Check the source’s playback options and confirm that it repeats as intended in your installed OBS version. Do not assume a process restart or a successful initial playback means the video will loop forever: observe a full end-to-start transition during testing.
  4. Set output and video settings. In Settings → Output, choose an encoder and configure bitrate and keyframe interval; in Settings → Video, set base/output resolution and frame rate. Match these to YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions, your encoder, and the upload capacity your connection can sustain. These values can change, so check YouTube’s guidance when configuring the stream instead of copying a numeric preset from an old tutorial. Higher frame rates can demand more from the computer; OBS notes that 60 fps is more demanding than 30 fps in its overview guide.
  5. Start a test stream. Start streaming in OBS and verify the event in YouTube Studio. Check that the video and audio appear correctly, the source repeats, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream before treating the setup as ready. OBS recommends testing before a first live stream in its Quick Start Guide.

Make the stream unattended only after testing

OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. That can start a stream when OBS launches, but it does not itself schedule the application, ensure the media source repeats, restore a failed process or guarantee that YouTube accepts a particular continuous-stream pattern. Those depend on the host operating system, source availability, network and separate process supervision. OBS’s launch-parameter guide notes that automated or scheduled Windows launches need the working directory set to the OBS executable folder.

Test the exact restart and recovery behavior you plan to rely on. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers dropped frames and network issues; a launch flag is not a substitute for monitoring or recovery planning.

When should you add NGINX RTMP?

Use NGINX RTMP when the server layer solves a concrete requirement—for example, you need a self-managed relay or server-side routing between an encoder and YouTube. The encoder sends its feed to the server, and NGINX handles it according to your configuration. That can provide routing control, but you also take on server deployment, network and security configuration, monitoring, and recovery if the server or relay path fails.

NGINX is not a required dependency for OBS, and installing it does not automatically create a looping-video controller. You still need an encoder/source that produces the feed and a tested way to keep the whole pipeline functioning. If you do not need a relay or routing layer, sending OBS directly to YouTube avoids an extra component to administer.

Stability, YouTube rules and troubleshooting

A loop that works once is not yet a dependable continuous stream. Test source transitions, audio/video synchronization, stream health and reconnect behavior for long enough to observe the failure cases that matter to your setup. Also check YouTube’s current account, copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. The encoder guidance cited here does not establish a loop-specific maximum duration or a blanket policy ruling for continuous prerecorded streams; do not infer either from the fact that OBS or NGINX can send a feed.

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
Dropped frames or a disconnect Connection instability, bitrate beyond sustained upload capacity, selected ingest server or network path. Use a wired connection where practical; check the server selection and lower bitrate if the link cannot sustain it. OBS also points to network settings, VPN/security software, Wi-Fi, router/modem and drivers in its troubleshooting guide.
The video does not repeat as expected Media Source playback configuration or behavior after the file ends. Check the source’s repeat setting in your installed OBS version and observe the end-to-start transition before going live.
The stream does not start after a scheduled launch Launch configuration, working directory, stream key or YouTube event state. Test the full launch path interactively, confirm the event and key, and check the working-directory requirement for automated Windows launches in OBS’s launch guide.
NGINX receives a feed but YouTube does not Server/relay configuration, destination details or the network path between server and YouTube. Trace the pipeline one hop at a time: confirm the encoder’s destination, inspect the NGINX configuration and relay behavior, then verify YouTube’s event and ingest status.
Audio or video is out of sync Source timing, encoding load or configuration along the pipeline. Check synchronization in the OBS preview and YouTube test, then isolate the source and encoder before adding or changing a relay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does NGINX RTMP make a prerecorded video loop by itself?

No. It is a server/relay component; the encoder and source configuration must provide the video feed and repeat behavior.

Can OBS start streaming automatically when it opens?

Yes. OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter, but automated startup does not provide complete process supervision or prove that a continuous stream will recover from every failure.

Is there a YouTube maximum duration for looping a prerecorded live stream?

The cited YouTube encoder pages do not establish a loop-specific maximum duration. Check YouTube’s current live-stream rules for your account and intended use.
