How to Monitor CPU and Memory Usage on an SRS YouTube Streaming Server

Use SRS’s summaries API for a quick resource check, or combine the Prometheus exporter, node_exporter, and Grafana for ongoing monitoring.

For a quick CPU and memory check, query SRS’s HTTP API at /api/v1/summaries. For history, dashboards, and alerting, use the SRS Prometheus exporter with Prometheus; add node_exporter to see whole-host metrics, and use Grafana to visualize them. The exact fields and exporter setup depend on your SRS release and configuration, so check the documentation for the version you run.

Check SRS CPU and memory usage now

Query the summaries endpoint

SRS exposes system and stream information through an HTTP API. If the API listener is enabled and reachable from the machine where you run the command, request the summaries endpoint:

curl http://127.0.0.1:1985/api/v1/summaries

This uses loopback, so it works only when the command runs on the SRS host or in a network namespace that can reach that listener. If SRS is on another host, substitute an address reachable from your monitoring machine and protect access according to your network setup. Do not expose an administrative API port directly to the public internet.

The response includes summary information such as process identity, CPU, and memory in the documented releases. The SRS v5 documentation gives port 1985 as an example. Confirm the API listener address and port for your installation rather than assuming that example applies unchanged.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check focused process or memory endpoints

The SRS v4 API reference also lists /api/v1/rusages, /api/v1/self_proc_stats, /api/v1/system_proc_stats, and /api/v1/meminfos. These offer more focused resource or process views, but availability and returned fields depend on release and configuration. Start with summaries; use a focused endpoint when you need a narrower view or are building a small integration.

Choose the right monitoring method

Approach Best for What it shows or needs Main caveat
SRS HTTP API summaries A one-off inspection or small custom integration SRS summary data, including CPU and memory in documented versions API availability, configured system statistics, and fields vary by version.
SRS Prometheus exporter Ongoing SRS metrics, retained history, and dashboards Prometheus to scrape and store metrics; Grafana can visualize them Confirm that the installed SRS release supports the documented exporter setup.
node_exporter alongside SRS Understanding the machine’s overall capacity and load A separate Prometheus target for host-level metrics Complements SRS measurements; it does not replace the SRS endpoint.

Set up ongoing monitoring with Prometheus

Confirm exporter support and enable it

The SRS exporter guide describes usage for SRS 5.0.86 or later. In the SRS v8 guide, the exporter is off by default and its documented default listener is port 9972; environment variables can enable and configure it. Treat those details as version-specific, not as defaults for every SRS build. Before changing a service or container configuration, check the exporter instructions for the exact release you have installed.

Scrape SRS and the host as separate targets

The SRS guide’s Prometheus example defines separate jobs for the SRS exporter and node_exporter. That separation is useful: SRS-reported process or service metrics help explain what the streaming server is doing, while host metrics show the wider machine context, including whether other processes or overall resource limits may be involved.

The guide’s example uses a five-second scrape interval. This is an example configuration, not a universal recommendation. Choose an interval suited to your monitoring needs and the volume of data you want to retain. Prometheus scrapes and stores the metrics; Grafana is the visualization layer shown in the SRS example.

Account for containers and network boundaries

If SRS or your monitoring stack runs in Docker or a cluster, verify that Prometheus can reach each exporter from its own network context. Check target addresses, listening interfaces, published ports, and whether the host and container can see the same endpoints. There is no single target address or port-publishing recipe that applies to every deployment.

Understand what the numbers represent

Separate SRS readings from host readings

An SRS summary or process endpoint is not interchangeable with a whole-machine view. A high process reading may indicate load in SRS, while host metrics can help show whether the machine is also busy because of other work or constrained overall. Monitor both when you need to distinguish service behavior from host capacity.

Check the configuration and release

The SRS v4 API guide describes a stats configuration for retrieving system statistics, including CPU and memory, and discusses network and disk statistics as well. It notes that stats.network relates to heartbeat system reporting and identifies disk-statistics configuration. Do not assume every metric is active or that fields are identical across releases. The v8 API reference is marked unstable; the v6 introduction includes both a stable label and a development-status note. Verify the documentation against the exact release you run.

Build a baseline rather than relying on a universal threshold

The cited SRS documentation does not establish a universal safe CPU or memory percentage. Record normal readings under your own stream and viewer load, then watch sustained changes and correlate them with stream quality and available host capacity. A brief spike and a persistent rise are different operational signals; interpret them in context rather than treating one isolated number as a pass/fail threshold.

Troubleshoot missing or misleading metrics

  • The API request fails: Check that the SRS HTTP API listener is enabled, that you are using the configured address and port, and that the request originates from a permitted network. Do not solve reachability problems by exposing the API publicly.
  • The summaries response lacks an expected field: Confirm the installed SRS version and its system-statistics configuration. Check the version-matched API reference and, if supported, try the relevant focused endpoint.
  • Prometheus cannot scrape SRS: Verify that the exporter is enabled for your SRS release, that it is listening on the expected interface and port, and that Prometheus can reach that address. The v8 guide’s default listener example is port 9972, but do not assume it is your configured value.
  • The SRS target works but host metrics are absent: Check that node_exporter is running and that Prometheus has a separate target for it. In containers or clusters, verify address and port visibility from the Prometheus network.
  • Metrics appear flat or unexpectedly low: Confirm you are looking at the intended SRS process or host, that the relevant statistics are configured, and that the collection target is current. Compare with observations made during representative streaming load.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate service for keeping uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel; it is not an SRS monitoring tool and does not provide CPU or memory dashboards. The workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams at the quality provided, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo attempts automatic recovery. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
