MediaMTX YouTube Stream Offline While FFmpeg Is Running: How to Troubleshoot It

A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is receiving a stream. Follow the publisher, MediaMTX path, forwarding destination, and required audio and video to find where it breaks.

A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a stream. FFmpeg may be publishing to the wrong MediaMTX path, MediaMTX may not be forwarding that path, or YouTube may be rejecting the forwarded media. Trace those links in order, and check that the stream reaching YouTube contains both audio and video.

Trace the stream from FFmpeg to YouTube

There are two separate connections to distinguish: FFmpeg can publish to MediaMTX, and MediaMTX can then forward that stream to YouTube. First establish which destination your actual FFmpeg command uses; do not troubleshoot the YouTube forwarding settings until you know the intended route.

  1. Read FFmpeg’s complete command. Check the final output URL and format. MediaMTX documents an RTMP example that ends with -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream. Confirm that your command publishes to the MediaMTX host and the expected protocol and path, rather than sending directly to YouTube or publishing under a different path. The example is illustrative, not a substitute for checking your command. See MediaMTX’s FFmpeg publishing documentation.
  2. Check whether MediaMTX sees the expected publisher and path. Look in the logs at the time of the attempt for configuration loading, publisher connections, path activity, disconnects, and errors. If FFmpeg is targeting a different path from the one configured for forwarding, a live process will not make the intended YouTube stream appear.
  3. Check MediaMTX’s forwarding destination. If MediaMTX is responsible for the YouTube connection, make sure the active path has a forwarding destination configured and that it uses the current ingest URL and stream key for your channel.
  4. Check the YouTube ingest state. Compare MediaMTX’s forwarding events with the status or error shown in YouTube Live Control Room. This helps locate whether the break is before forwarding, during the outbound connection, or at YouTube’s ingest.

MediaMTX’s stream-forwarding guide gives a YouTube destination example in which the ingest URL and stream key are joined with #. Its sample hostname reflects what YouTube reported when that guide was last updated, so use the current address displayed in your own Live Control Room, not an old example copied from documentation or a previous setup.

Inspect MediaMTX logs and configuration

Logs can tell you which boundary is failing, but without your command, configuration, and log output there is no way to identify the particular cause of this offline status. Correlate messages around the time FFmpeg starts: look for the publisher connecting to the expected path, MediaMTX attempting to forward it, and any disconnect or error from that attempt.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • MediaMTX supports error, warn, info, and debug log levels, with output directed to stdout, a file, or syslog. Confirm which destination your configuration uses before assuming the relevant messages are absent.
  • If the normal output does not show enough detail, temporarily set logLevel to debug and reproduce the problem. Return to your normal level when you have collected the needed diagnostics.
  • After changing the configuration, validate it with the documented --validate-conf option. The configuration reference identifies itself as the copy for the latest release, v1.21.1; that is the version represented by the reference, not evidence of which version you have installed.

Use the log sequence to answer two concrete questions: did MediaMTX receive FFmpeg’s publisher on the intended path, and did it establish or attempt the separate outbound connection to YouTube? An FFmpeg process listing alone answers neither.

Verify the YouTube destination and stream key

When MediaMTX is doing the forwarding, compare its configured destination with the current ingest address and key in YouTube Live Control Room. The key is specific to your account or stream setup; generic documentation cannot confirm that your configured value is correct. YouTube’s live-streaming setup help explains how to copy the stream key into an encoder.

The MediaMTX guide recommends changing the destination scheme to rtmps:// to encrypt the connection in transit. YouTube also documents RTMPS support. Do not copy a generic sample host and assume it is still current: the MediaMTX guide explicitly warns that YouTube’s ingest hostname may change.

Make sure the stream has both audio and video

A silent rejection can look like an unexplained offline stream. MediaMTX’s forwarding documentation states: “YouTube requires streams to have both a video and an audio track. Video-only streams are silently rejected.” Check the media that MediaMTX sends to YouTube, not just whether FFmpeg is running or producing video locally. A video-only output does not satisfy this documented YouTube requirement.

Investigate timeouts without guessing at the cause

If MediaMTX logs show a failed outbound connection or timeout, recheck the current YouTube destination and stream key, then investigate network reachability from the machine running MediaMTX. YouTube Help advises checking the encoder documentation when a connection times out. A timeout alone does not establish whether the problem is DNS, a firewall, TLS, routing, or an account condition; the available error details and deployment context determine what to check next.

Common symptoms and next checks

What you observe What to check next
FFmpeg remains running, but MediaMTX logs no publisher on the expected path Recheck the complete FFmpeg output URL, protocol, MediaMTX host, and path.
MediaMTX sees the publisher, but no forwarding attempt appears Check whether the active path has the intended YouTube forwarding configuration.
MediaMTX attempts to forward, but YouTube stays offline Verify the current ingest URL and key in Live Control Room, then inspect outbound connection errors and confirm both audio and video reach YouTube.
MediaMTX reports a timeout Verify the destination and credentials, then check network reachability from the MediaMTX host. Do not infer a specific network or account fault from the timeout alone.
YouTube appears to reject an otherwise active video stream Confirm the forwarded stream includes an audio track as well as video.
